    PSA: NOT ALL PALLETS ARE SAFE FOR WOODWORKING (OR BURNING)
    All pallets should be stamped with the treatments they have received and I definitely recommend looking up how to read those stamps before working with them. Most in my area are domestic pallets that just have a HT (heat treated) or KD (kiln dried) coding and should be as safe as any wood. Stay away from pallets labeled SF (sulphuryl fluoride) or MB (methyl bromide). Do your own research because codes and treatments may be different in your region.
    ALWAYS wear a dust mask specifically designed and OSHA approved for dust when sanding or using any power tool that creates airborne dust. A medical mask is not that same as a dust mask.
    Heres a good, quick summary: ua-cam.com/video/aM2c8kBhIFk/v-deo.html

    I just started watching your channel and am blown away by your level of craftsmanship, breadth of skills and attention to detail. This project is jaw-dropping, like so many of the others you've posted (brass hammer, the bowl you turned, and so on), plus your editing and musical choices are top notch. I didn't hesitate to subscribe. Well done, keep up the fantastic work, and best of luck catching 'Acceleratii incredibus'! 😉

    It's great to see someone young learning to do things the proper way and using hand tools instead of always grabbing the power tools for ease. You did a lovely job and the tool box looks quite professional.

      It’s not perfect but I’m very happy with it! I definitely use both but I want to develop the skill and discipline to use hand tools as much as possible. Sometimes it’s even faster than setting up a whole router jig for something like this. Thanks for watching!

    I like the idea of drilling out and gluing dowels in the nail holes versus wood filler. I think that will last longer and it might be cheaper considering all the nail holes some pallets have.

      Thanks for watching! You don't need too much to get started! My recommendation is to always pick a project you want to do then get the minimum tools you need to make it or make do with what you have as much as possible. You will quickly build a collection of tools, but won't end up with a bunch of tools you don't need (yet).

    Wow. I loved this video. Your craftsmanship, style and music all works beautifully. I love how you turned pallet wood into that gorgeous box using such simple tools. I love when people use these simpler tools because it’s so rare nowadays. And I’m one of the people who still does it since I don’t have a table saw, planer, bandsaw etc. Everthing you did in this video, inspired me. I made a similar project a few months back using pallet wood however mine was not quite as well made as yours. I just cut the boards to sides and nailed them together to make a box, then used 3M spray glue to apply my lining. Absolute disaster. The way you do it has inspired me how you do it so accurately and calmly. Is that pallet wood oak? It’s beautiful!

      Thanks for watching and subscribing! It’s much appreciated! 🙏🏻 The wood is indeed white oak and it appears to be quarter sawn, which gives it that really nice grain pattern. PVA glue (aka white Elmers glue) like I used is definitely the way to go with lining like this because you have a few extra seconds to adjust the fabric before it starts to bond. Spray glue and contact cement have to be perfect 😅

      @fraforgt-350r2 2 роки тому

      @@kelseywatson1974 you know your stuff man. Quarter sawn white oak pallets! Fancy!
      Yeah I was using very thin faux velvet, which was just too thin so I had to use foam A4 sheets to back it. I wanted a glue that was strong and had no soak in so it wouldn’t go through the fabric. It still went through because I oversprayed it I think. Really boring product to work with imo. I masked off and still got loads of overspray on my oak box. Sticky on the hands 😬

      Thank you! Most of the hardware is vintage things I found on eBay for relatively cheap. The corners are from an amp and the latches are from a guitar case. The hinges are new old stock vintage hinges. The handles are modern road case handles, but I think they all work together well enough.

      Thanks for watching! It’s a few coats of shellac with a light sanding between coats then some paste wax on top. Such a quick and easy process but I think it came out great and has held up really well. The shellac really brings out the grain patterns too!

      @@kelseywatson1974 The reason I asked was it had an extension so it seemed more accurate since you weren’t holding the motor. The extension almost looked like a drill bit chuck. Thanks!

      @@JayRH13 yessir the extension is a super nice feature that came with it. It’s not the most flexible tube but it does work. I think they make smaller ones now that only have a small cord which would be great for a lot of detail work.

    I'm 65 years old and have never seen an oak pallet. I called 2 pallet distributors and one laughed at me when I asked for an oak pallet, the other asked what imbecile would make a pallet out of oak and hung up on me. Finally found a private seller who would sell me a used oak pallet for $200.

    • @kelseywatson1974
      @kelseywatson1974  3 роки тому

      I would not pay that! We have tons of oak pallets around me. I got mine for free from the trash. Apparently, some places in South America use mahogany! As far as I know, it’s just a regional thing based on what wood is plentiful
