Instructions unclear, I can now see into the future with my Helios. Just kidding, perfect tutorial, I’ve re-lubricated my three Helios lenses with ease. Thanks.
Thanks for the tutorial! I was apprehensive but decided to dive in once I gathered some tools. I got halfway. The screws in that last ring are about 1.2mm and I don't have a good screwdriver that small. The screws have destroyed a few cheap drivers tonight tho. I couldn't get it all… so I decided to get some and see what happens. Instead of removing that ring, I focused the lens out as far as I could and cleaned in the exposed helicoid with qtips, a toothbrush, and a rag, with isopropyl alcohol. Then I added fresh grease with a qtip, and closed up the whole lens assembly. It's already a million times better, night and day difference in effort required to focus, even if only some 50% cleaned. One thing to note, on my 44-2 (79xxxxx serial number) that 91% isopropyl alcohol takes off the black paint. While it's beautiful under the black (cause I wiped out the entire inside) - my aperture zone area is a bit less black now. I may have lowered the value of this lens, no idea really, but I increased the usability by a factor of 10. Thanks again!
Thank you for your input! It can be done in this way also, though it is not a full service. One needs to got a good quality screwdriwers for those screws. Also WD-40 sometimes helps.

Hi. Extremely helpful videos. Your videos have given me the confidence to try refurbishing my Helios. I have one copy of M39 mount Helios 44 which is in excellent optical condition but focus is too tight. Unfortunately I can't open the lens as it seems jammed. Do you have any advice? I would love to bring this lens back to function. Thanks
I was doing the part at 6:55, but the unscrewed part popped off. Which is why I didn't mark it. After assembling, the lens focuses only in an incomplete range. Any advice on how to find the right thread arrangement???
I noticed that the lens in the video looks like a Type 7 or 8 Valdai made version. Are the disassembly steps the same for a Type 6 BeLOMO new body version? I couldn't unscrew the optical block from the helicoid part (1:34), which led me to believe there are different steps for the Type 6 BeLOMO new body version. I'm trying to fix the wobbly screw mount part of my copy of the lens!
I followed this but when I close the lens, it no longer can fosu to infinity. in the part you are holding in your right hand at 12:46, there is another pin, not the one I can see in your lens, that prevents the other half of the lens from screwing all the way down. Not sure how it was set before as i have not touched that pin...
I had to disassemble a Helios 44 (not the 44-2) to lubricate it, but the re-assembly is very difficult for the focusing ring parts and it's very different from the 44-2 version
I have a Helios 44-2 which has what I can best describe as focus backlash. That means that when I turn the focus ring with the hills and valleys the ring moves but the distance does not change immediately. Do you know if this is due to wear, sloppy tolerances, or if this would improve if I re-greased the lens. Perhaps I should try tightening those 3 screws> Any input would be appreciated.
many thanks, I just finished regreasing my Helios 44 regreasing at 12:07 and 13:00 is indeed very important, at first attempt I didn't do this, now focusing is much smoother.. when I got it it was so stiff you couldn't focus anymore :) btw, do you know a way how to grease or make the preset aperture ring on the front go smoother? it is very hard to operate..
Thanks for the video! I have an issue where my lense I purchased has a focus ring that won't budge at all, and I mean not one bit. Does this sound like a mechanical issue or lack of lubrication? How would you go about diagnosing something like this? Also what type of screw driver are you using? Thanks
Hi, on my 44-2 the rear element that screws into the adapter is making a clicking noise when moved around and the focus barrel is a bit stiff. Would re-greasing it help with the clicking?
Hello, i have Helios 44-2 and i have a situation. The spacer that is in lens group and in front of focus group. Can you tell me the thickness of this spacer? Thank you for your help.
Hey! Is there a rule of thumb for how frequently this procedure is usually required? Once per year / every 5 years etc? Thanks for your work and videos. I have one of your 44-2's with the Nikon tweak :)
Hello, I've got a question - how much strength do I have to take to turn off the optical system? I cannot unscrew it in any other way and I'm afraid that I can damage something. Any suggestions to help? thanks in advance!
You can't damage anyting. The problem is that sometimes(around 1-2% of cases) it is tightened up so strongly that it is impossible to unscrew it using only hands. Try to unscrew it as strong as you can.
I have a 44-2 from 1985, i think, and no matter how much force i make, i can't separate the focus and glass elements. It just won't rotate any more than infinite. Any help?
Well, sometimes, rarely, it is tighten so firmly at the factory that it is impossible to unscrew 2 parts from each other. I encountered such lens 2 or 3 times among hundreds... I assume that you had a bad luck with your lens....
Mine is going stiff halfway when turning the aperture. You think this process will fix it? Also it makes clicking sounds like it's loosing up. And it Can be heard in the video I shot 😭
Hy. Is it possible to to remove the play in the back ring/focus? It's just a small clicking noise when I turn the ring at the connection thread. Thank you

Thank you for this! Perfect instructions and easy to follow. My Helios went from being super difficult to turn to being buttery smooth
Thank you for this! I'm no longer terrified of taking apart the focus helicoid
How you did it was barbaric, but still educative and I'm still grateful for that knowledge.
many thanks. My 44-2 focus didn't went below 0,7m fix it with the procedure described here. God job.

sometimes you need to apply a force to make first step-unscrew lens into 2 parts.

belomo new body is unscrewing exatly in the same way, just you need to apply a force.

Hello, thanks for your video, its very helpfull.
Did 44M 2/58 (from 80s) has the same architecture inside to cleaning & lubricate ?
Thanks.
Great video! I can't seem to take the front off of my lens? Any suggestions?
Mine was really tight.
I had to disassemble a Helios 44 (not the 44-2) to lubricate it, but the re-assembly is very difficult for the focusing ring parts and it's very different from the 44-2 version
no it's not, I just regreased my Helios 44, it looks the same, just the lettering is not green but white..

i think it is mechanical problem. I'm using a flat screwdriver 1mm width

Can anyone recommend the best grease to use?
thanks for the tutorial lenses are perfect now
Hello! I have a helios 44-2 kmz, the optical block is stuck, i can remove it. I put some WD40 but doesnt work! What can i do??
Where can I find the tiny screws that keep the focus ring in place. Mines broke. Also, any information on the dimensions of those screws?
you just need to buy another lens in for parts or repair condition and take them from it. This is only one solution i know
Hello, i have Helios 44-2 and i have a situation. The spacer that is in lens group and in front of focus group. Can you tell me the thickness of this spacer? Thank you for your help.
By any chance do you have any videos on lubing original helios 44 13 blades?
No i don't, but it is pretty similar
Hey! Is there a rule of thumb for how frequently this procedure is usually required? Once per year / every 5 years etc?
Thanks for your work and videos. I have one of your 44-2's with the Nikon tweak :)
There is no frequency rule, put re-lubrication if needed.
where can i get spare screws for the helios lenses?
you need to buy the same lens in parts or repair condition and get screws from it, i do not know other way
Hello! I have a Helios 44 that has a very stiff focus ring. But the problem is that I cant remove the optical block. Do you know what I can do? Thanks
you need to apply enough force to make it unscrew
Thx for sharing.
How big are the small screws, which thread and which length?
Thanks in advance.
With best regards
I think it is m1.4x3mm

Hello :) just ordered a Helios 44-2 MC from you and waiting for it :) Question, do you also plan to make a lubrication video for the Jupiter-37A?
Hello Bruno! Thank you very much! Jupiter-37A very rarely needs lubrication, so right now i do not plan to record such video.
Can I use this method(screw) to separate the helicoid and the optical part in Mir 1V?
No, mir-1 is completely different
Oh, I see. Thanks
How did they manage to build this lens originally without the markings?
According to their technological procedures, which are not available to us

any lithium based grease fill fit well
@@RetroFotoHouse Are you still selling grease?
The grease is brown bear's fat, like the original.
Guys in the West be careful, the Soviets may have booby-trapped some of them, watch your fingers!

unfortunately it is complicated, as design tolerances were not respected in the factory
