Instructions unclear, I can now see into the future with my Helios.
Just kidding, perfect tutorial, I’ve re-lubricated my three Helios lenses with ease. Thanks.

Thanks for the tutorial! I was apprehensive but decided to dive in once I gathered some tools.
    I got halfway.
The screws in that last ring are about 1.2mm and I don't have a good screwdriver that small. The screws have destroyed a few cheap drivers tonight tho.
I couldn't get it all… so I decided to get some and see what happens.
Instead of removing that ring, I focused the lens out as far as I could and cleaned in the exposed helicoid with qtips, a toothbrush, and a rag, with isopropyl alcohol.
Then I added fresh grease with a qtip, and closed up the whole lens assembly.
It's already a million times better, night and day difference in effort required to focus, even if only some 50% cleaned.
One thing to note, on my 44-2 (79xxxxx serial number) that 91% isopropyl alcohol takes off the black paint. While it's beautiful under the black (cause I wiped out the entire inside) - my aperture zone area is a bit less black now.
I may have lowered the value of this lens, no idea really, but I increased the usability by a factor of 10.
    Thanks again!

Thank you for your input! It can be done in this way also, though it is not a full service. One needs to got a good quality screwdriwers for those screws. Also WD-40 sometimes helps.

Hi. Extremely helpful videos. Your videos have given me the confidence to try refurbishing my Helios. I have one copy of M39 mount Helios 44 which is in excellent optical condition but focus is too tight. Unfortunately I can't open the lens as it seems jammed. Do you have any advice? I would love to bring this lens back to function. Thanks

    • @RetroFotoHouse

sometimes you need to apply a force to make first step-unscrew lens into 2 parts.

I was doing the part at 6:55, but the unscrewed part popped off. Which is why I didn't mark it. After assembling, the lens focuses only in an incomplete range. Any advice on how to find the right thread arrangement???

I noticed that the lens in the video looks like a Type 7 or 8 Valdai made version. Are the disassembly steps the same for a Type 6 BeLOMO new body version? I couldn't unscrew the optical block from the helicoid part (1:34), which led me to believe there are different steps for the Type 6 BeLOMO new body version.
I'm trying to fix the wobbly screw mount part of my copy of the lens!

belomo new body is unscrewing exatly in the same way, just you need to apply a force.

I followed this but when I close the lens, it no longer can fosu to infinity.
in the part you are holding in your right hand at 12:46, there is another pin, not the one I can see in your lens, that prevents the other half of the lens from screwing all the way down. Not sure how it was set before as i have not touched that pin...

I had to disassemble a Helios 44 (not the 44-2) to lubricate it, but the re-assembly is very difficult for the focusing ring parts and it's very different from the 44-2 version

I have a Helios 44-2 which has what I can best describe as focus backlash. That means that when I turn the focus ring with the hills and valleys the ring moves but the distance does not change immediately. Do you know if this is due to wear, sloppy tolerances, or if this would improve if I re-greased the lens. Perhaps I should try tightening those 3 screws> Any input would be appreciated.

  • @ast3663

many thanks, I just finished regreasing my Helios 44
regreasing at 12:07 and 13:00 is indeed very important, at first attempt I didn't do this, now focusing is much smoother..
when I got it it was so stiff you couldn't focus anymore :)
btw, do you know a way how to grease or make the preset aperture ring on the front go smoother? it is very hard to operate..

Thanks for the video! I have an issue where my lense I purchased has a focus ring that won't budge at all, and I mean not one bit. Does this sound like a mechanical issue or lack of lubrication? How would you go about diagnosing something like this? Also what type of screw driver are you using? Thanks

Hello, I've got a question - how much strength do I have to take to turn off the optical system? I cannot unscrew it in any other way and I'm afraid that I can damage something. Any suggestions to help? thanks in advance!

    • @RetroFotoHouse
      @RetroFotoHouse  3 роки тому +1

You can't damage anyting. The problem is that sometimes(around 1-2% of cases) it is tightened up so strongly that it is impossible to unscrew it using only hands. Try to unscrew it as strong as you can.

Well, sometimes, rarely, it is tighten so firmly at the factory that it is impossible to unscrew 2 parts from each other. I encountered such lens 2 or 3 times among hundreds... I assume that you had a bad luck with your lens....
