The ‘Lift or Elevator Algorithm’ is one of the common choices of system used in hard disc drive controllers to decide how to order the requests for data that arrive. Rather than just responding in chronological order they typically use the Lift Algorithm to in effect sweep the head from inner to outer tracks (cylinders) and back again. This reduces the wear compared to randomly jumping between tracks.

I learned how to do some basic stuff on Otis elevators around 1979-1980, both manually operated and automatic by watching the repair guy. One day on my shift in the building a passenger elevator got stuck between floors, it was loaded, I was able to bring it up to the floor and open the doors from the motor room and floor selector. When I lived in Brooklyn and had to move out of the 6 story building I was in, the power had been cut off and I had 25 tons of sculptures to move out, I was able to move the elevator up and down without power but it took 7 flights of stairs for every trip to do it as the motor room was on the roof. I used a crow bar to release the brake shoes from the drum with the elevator loaded, and since that was heavier than the counterweight the car slowly decended. It was not easy peering down thru the grating into the dark shaft to try to tell when the car was at the ground floor even with a flashlight laid on the floor, but it did work. Empty car was lighter than the couterweight so releasing the brake shoes let the car come back up. I had wished I could have found a small elevator motor assembly, those older ones were very cool, I would have taken one home for my collection but they are heavy cast-iron buggers! I did get and still have one of the double ball fly governors, it weighs about 90 pounds alone.
Spectacular video! This gives me a good in depth understanding of how the 1960s OTIS’ are controlled via relays. I love when I’m in a 60’s OTIS and I hear a few relays click and then the lift motor powers up. Anyway, like I said earlier spectacular video Mrmatt!!

Very awesome video. I just came into possession of two 1962 Otis selectors from a 5-story dorm and about 95% of the guts from the two relay control racks. I have enough good parts to build a motor powered simulator using one selector, a reversible gear motor, and the relays. Should be fun project when I get started on it! Your video is going to be a handy reference!

My plan is to have two panels, one representing the lamps and buttons in the car, and another representing the lamps call buttons on the floors. The selector and relays will be mounted between them. The controller will operate a reversible gear motor that runs the selector carriage up and down, to make the simulation function. It will be quite a site to see when operating. Until then I have to work on putting humpty dumpty back together again. The selectors are in one piece, but the controller parts were removed by the installers using a sawzall to remove the components, I will have to reconstruct or make new mountings for all the relays. I did not get the controller rack cabinets themselves. Even disassembled they were large and too heavy to handle, I will make my own versions of those as well. A lot to do, but this may end up being the only working relay logic Otis controller left operating in North America when I am done, so I feel the effort is well justified.

My job is with security systems... we install access control mainly, cctv, intruder and some fire alarms. Good question! When I get time to finish the editing! The animation and voice over is 95% complete, just need to put it all together. I expect within a week, but I'm on a 12 hour flight in a few days so I'm going to "try" and finish it then.
I have an answer now - it's finished. I'm going to premiere it this Friday at 8pm I think. I will be uploading a video in between this with more details.
Oh, and the 12 hour flight from Hong Kong - because I hardly slept the day before and this was a night flight, I was absolutely shattered and couldn't even think about turning on the laptop to edit! So this video was delayed a bit!

Matt please go to Brighton! There is a tiny little old single speed 1950's 1st gen Express lift @ Heals, and some Waygood Otis lifts @ the Old Ship Hotel which is nearby!
There is an old Otis in a tower block in hove and is relay controlled. And the motor is at the bottom of the shafts so you would need a drop key to get to see the motor in detail but the relay logic is at the top floor and requires a screwdriver to access. Pls film this lift. It's at shanklid court in hangleton
Just curious if you know anything about the Otis Autotronic model. Not sure if they were common in the UK but here in the US they were. They were billed as continuous operation or “timed” cars. Signs on call switches would say press to “stop” elevator not press to “call”. They also often used touched sensitive buttons. I grew up around a lot of these and sadly not many left.

Landing call are the buttons on the landings (floors) where you press the button to call the lift. Car calls are the floor buttons you press inside the lift, to select a floor.
My apartment elevator is just like this except computer controller instead! I hate when people go into the elevator not paying attention to the call button

Great video I have found the same logic in out 2004 gen2 at work. There is 4 landing calls but all only have a single down button other then the ground where it has a up call. Is this a program error from otis? As the mid floors should just be generic call.
I did it with a ladder logic on an Allen Bradley PLC and it is far from simple. Actually, this is one of the hardest programs in a professional course where Boolean logic is used with 0s and 1s, which in reality is a proper AI.
Does anyone know how I can find a local technician that understands this relay logic? I need someone that understands and can troubleshoot an old otis system.

It wil always head for the highest or lowest call, regardless of whether its a car or landing call. If the lift arrives at its last call and then afterwards a landing call is placed then you dont want the direction decided before you have even had a chance to enter the lift. Therefore landing calls are ignored for a while so the passenger sets the direction. With Express lift Co, the landing call button sets the direction upon arrival to the floor, if you press a call button in the OTHER direction then the lift will only change to that direction if there are no calls. E.g. indicated DN, then you get in and press a higher car call, if there is a landong call in downward direction then it will serve that first. Otis arrives at a destination without a set direction.
Mr. Matt I just realize something. In the United States meter is spelled like this, M.E.T.E.R., But in the United Kingdom it’s spelled like this, M.E.T.R.E.

These are 100-120volt relays.
