You are so thorough! Bravo! Your videos are jam packed with detailed information. You instruct and move on, instruct and move on. Very effective. We have to replay the video over and over, but that's the way it should be. Even your little anecdotes about how you tend to do a letter this or that way are informative. Excellent job, María. Even your voice and accent are pleasant. It reminds me of friends from long ago from Cuba. In short, I love your videos. Thank you. Too bad UA-cam mixes them all up and I have to search for the one I want. But you are consistent in naming them, so even that search is not so bad. I would like to take a class with you in the near future if you are still doing that. Keep up the good work. Con cariño, Cecilia. P.S. I make and print my own guide sheets. Since the height of an oval should be twice its width, should I make the diagonal spaces half as wide as the spaces made by the horizontal lInes?
Hi Cecilia, thank you very much for your feedback, I really appreciate it! Regarding the space between the slant lines, it doesn't really matter because this will only be helpful for individual letters but not for words and longer texts as the space will vary depending on the letter combinations. I’m new or want to be new at this. I just ordered my first nib(s). I am so glad I found you! I love the way you explain things. Today I will focus on the alphabet and learning how to first write it in pencil or pen. Thank you again!
I have never seen the entrance to a "w" as an over turn, always an under turn... in Copperplate. I love all your detail in what we're to look for from one letter to the next... always comparing
Absolutely! my materials are very basic. I don’t spend money on fancy tools as the outcome of my work is mostly digital. Other calligraphers do a lot of original work, which my be a different scenario then.
Enhorabuena!
Maria, is it possible to send you an example of my Copperplate and have you critique it? I have been using this script for a few years and practice frequently, but I can't seem to get the delicate, flowing nature that I like (such as your script.) You can let me know what the fee would be for an hour of your time. Thanks!
Hi Gale, yes this is totally possible. You can book a private tuition for one hour, and we'll go over your script and evaluate how to elevate it. Follow the link below: mariamontes.bigcartel.com/product/1-1-private-calligraphy-course
I have watched all of these & now I’ve been going back and working with you. I was wondering what kind of paper are you using? Is it normal to get kind of a scratching sound & a little resistance on the upstroke?
Most Calligraphers suggest using the HP premium 32lb paper because this is the best priced paper to practice with. It is thick enough not to bleed and thin enough to see the guides behind it. Currently it is 19.99 for 500 sheets on Amazon.
Technically Maria is using a Calligraphy Oblique Dip pen, this type of pen receives the ink from "dipping" the nib in the ink. The fountain pen conversely receives the ink from within the pen barrel itself. The style of Calligraphy Oblique Dip pen she is using is something like this one on Amazon for 10.00 for 2 of them: www.amazon.com/Oblique-Calligraphy-Multi-Fit-English-Pointed/dp/B08LR63QJV/ref=sr_1_19?keywords=oblique+dip+pen&qid=1664018389&qu=eyJxc2MiOiI0Ljk4IiwicXNhIjoiNC40MSIsInFzcCI6IjIuMzIifQ%3D%3D&sr=8-19
I love the way you break this process down. It’s very informative
I love the way you teach this, it is so helpful in forming the letters and knowing what I am trying to achieve. Thanks so much for your time.
Thanks for watching!
Thank you for presenting this so clearly and so beautifully! Looking forward to today’s practice.

@@iamariamontes yes ma’am! 🥰

Correct, in classic Copperplate the shape of the w follows the shape of the u. This is my personal way of teaching w which follows the shape of the v.
Glad to see you are using the same cheap holder I do,
