A jack in the box with no head??? LOL!!!! Sometimes when people find a burnt resistor like that, they will put in one of a higher wattage, but as you found out in this design they are also useful as a slow blow fuse! This change equates to the 25 amp fuse in a 5 amp circuit lol It's good you didn't alter that design. They key to knowing this is the low resistance, and it's between the bus and a circuit. Nice Job!
Brave resistor, taking on, all of the 12v line, good job it did. If it was not there, a short across the caps, would take down the 12v line across the machine. Stick to the 1/4 watt, it's like a fuse and is protecting the rest of the machine. µF is micro farad 🤣 Nice to see you fixing stuff, instead of sending it off for repair. 👍
@@pinballshenanigans Manual say 1/4 watt, I would stick with it. The only thing a 1/2 watt would do would take longer to burn out and could lead to worst things. As the board had a fault(shorted Cap), the resistor adsorbed the power and finally burning out, protecting the 12v line, from shorting. This gives a clue where the fault was( the opto board) and not the whole machine blowing the 12v fuse, thus leaving you confused. Hope this helps :)
Great timing on this video! I'm just about to repair a mist board myself, but now i won't go straight for the inducer... will check R4 and look closely at those 2 caps 1st & clean them up if needed
@@808zhu I do like Ghostbusters but I ended up selling it. Someone really wanted it and I was okay with letting it go and moving on to the next shiny object LOL
@@pinballshenanigans You didn't miss anything, but it's your reaction to that friend's BSD I saw in one of your videos I'm talking about. It IS awesome!
If that R4 cooks again I'd try upping it to a 1/2 watt resistor, looks like your replacement was a 1/4 watt. R12 on that diagram was also a 10 ohm just like R4 and it looks like the manufacturer used 1/2 watt there
K, in this design, it's a bad idea going to the 1/2 watt rating since the intended use of the part was a fuse along with acting as a voltage dropper. It would be like putting in a larger fuse into a circuit and roasting something expensive.
I ended up just buying a new 24 board, R14 completely went up in A lot of smoke. There was no saving it sadly.. This happened last week, all drac optoboards dying now huh?😅
This is a great fix to start out with if you haven't done it before. A soldering iron, solder, and either wick or a solder sucker is the minimum needed to get this job done. Give it a try! Don't forget Isopropyl alcohol and an old toothbrush or q-tips to clean up the electrolyte from the cap and also the flux from the solder.
@@PastorOW Oh wow! What went bad on that board? That resistor must have been held right at that 1/4w breaking point for a long time to get that hot. Damn. Well, if you're not going for a restoration, can you still fix that board?
@@jasongreene303 Definitely worth a shot, but for now the replacement board from homepin is installed. All is working well now though. If only this video came out a week earlier, then i would have tried to fix it for sure.
When I first saw Mist... I was freaking out how the ball wandered across the playfield. Very cool.
One of the coolest features in pinball for sure!

Haha! Thanks man. Ahh I should keep the 1/4 watter in there then I guess!
Thanks for the video, Mike. I learned a lot about this potential problem. Great for preventative maintenance. Great work!
Oh yes preventative maintenance for sure! Thanks man!! Glad you liked!

You got it!! :)
Great job with this fix 👍🏻
Thank you! Cheers!

That makes perfect sense. Appreciate the reply. I will keep it at a 1/4
