    In term of motion blur, yes. The 120Hz has a motion interpolation feature that is not shown in this video (check out our other videos), but most people do not like that effect and it cannot work with video games due to input lag.

    These are both 60 Hz TVs, the one on the right just implements TruMotion technology.

      Old comment but both the tvs have motion interpolation disabled, what u see is just slow pixel response times which is typical for a tv

      @@Groovemasterflex1 but its fine, there is no difference when watching 24fps content on either a 60hz or 120hz tv. Thats what this video is trying to show us, and it did.

  • @RTINGSdotcom

    Motion flow is useless for gaming because it adds too much input lag that it needs to be disabled. We did review this TV in person (check out our website for the review, or check our other videos of the R450). Overall, it is a great TV even for a 60Hz. The only downside of it is the narrow viewing angle, but if you game alone/directly in front of the TV, it doesn't matter. Go for it.

  • @RTINGSdotcom
    @RTINGSdotcom  11 років тому +1

    No, eye strain is independent of the panel refresh rate. Eye strain is caused mainly by 2 things: too bright display or flickering. A LCD panel actually never flickers, it is the LEDs behind it that does. The LEDs will flicker either intentionally (look for a "LED Motion" settings or something similar), or to reduce the brightness. In our video, you can see that the TVs flickers because we didn't set the backlight intensity to the max.

  • @RTINGSdotcom
    @RTINGSdotcom  11 років тому +3

    The main advantage a 120Hz TV has is the dejudder/motion interpolation. When turned on, it is smoother, but you can't use this on video games or computer monitor because of the added input lag. (Check out our video called "Soap Opera Effect in Slow Motion" to see that feature in slow motion)

  • @RTINGSdotcom
    @RTINGSdotcom  11 років тому +1

    If a 100Hz CRT doesn't burn your eye but a 60Hz does, your problem is most likely due to the flickering. Did you try a LCD monitor? Their CCFL backlight cannot be dimmed by flickering the same way as a LED backlight. You could also find a monitor that dim its LED backlight by reducing the voltage instead of flickering, but it isn't advertised in the spec.

    Thanks for the info. Under a warranty replacement, they gave me a 60hz unit instead of my 120 hz and I was worried about the blurriness.

  • @RTINGSdotcom

    In this video, the LA6200 has the TruMotion setting turned off. Check out our video of only the LA6200 to see what happens when you turned it on. That mode doesn't reduce the actual blur, it just adds fake frames in between the real frames. It doesn't work for gaming and there are artifacts for fast movies and sports. So overall, I personally prefer leaving that option off.

  • @ravaelkhan5846
    @ravaelkhan5846 7 років тому +2

    To me, if you look closely, the 60Hz TV produces a new image for each frame whilst the 120Hz TV sort of retains the image from the first frame while jumping on to the next one. The question is whether this is true 120Hz or just a way of making it feel like one.

  • @RTINGSdotcom

    That model is a year old and was replaced by the UN32F5500 this year. Besides the older version of the smart TV interface and bezel change, there is not much difference.You do not need to upgrade to a 120Hz one unless you want the soap opera effect when watching movies.

  • @RTINGSdotcom
    @RTINGSdotcom  11 років тому

    Contrary to 120Hz monitors, there are no 120Hz TV that supports a real 120Hz input, the extra frames needs to be generated by the TV.
    Yes, its the PWM of the backlight that creates the flickering. I am not aware of the models that do not use this technique to dim the backlight, but there is a way around it. Put the backlight setting to the max (thus removing the PWM), and bring down the contrast/brightness setting. This won't give you the best picture, but should stop the flickering.

    120Hz 2D is not officially supported by any TV. It works in some cases though. Check out the FH6030. It is very good for the price and doesn't have any extra features like Smart TV except 3D. You will have to google a bit though to check if you can get 120Hz 2D working on it.

    calling bullshit. I've put my 42 inch LCD 60hz side by side with my new 55 inch 120hz and motions are noticeably different. On the 120hz especially during fast motion it looks ALOT better not sudden jerks but nice and smooth motion. Now between 120hz and 240hz isnt as noticeable but between 60 and 120 it is.

  • @greendg7
    @greendg7 11 років тому

    alriight, seems you are on top of this. I agree the 120HZ just has too many artifacts and even makes the motion looks worse in most cases. Interpreted frames and backlight strobing add up to a mess. Your Rtings sign should be a simple test for 120 motion estimation and compensation programs and it struggles. I really don't see the plasma screens being much better in motion than the LG or Sony with backlight scanning -

    Unless you're a twitch gamer then 60hz and 60fps is more than fine. The strange thing is a lot of modern games actually come with a motion blur effect as standard, further negating the need for 120hz. I know in 2017 this is obviously an old argument but there are plenty of us wanting to sell on our old 2013 TV's and the first question I seem to get asked is "is it 120hz". You're watching Southpark, it doesn't matter!!

    I own both and on a 4k TV the 120hz is better for sports, video games, and overall just looks smoother especially once you get over 50 inches. I have a Vizio P series and it's inferior to the Panasonic CX420U. P series everything looks over processed. CX420U's as smooth as silk and noticeably has a better display and picture when it comes to smoothness. If you're a games it's even more obvious.

      ***** Your monitor has an input lag of more than that, even CRTs don't get that low. You are probably confusing the response time with the input lag. Response time is the time the pixels take to shift to another color. Input lag is the time from the input to the beginning of the pixel change. Input lag is a lot higher than response time on LCDs.

    From what I understand, when watching regular tv shows, no fast action 60hz is better, but when it comes to sports, games, action movies etc. 120hz is better and won't lag or skip. Most 120hz tv's come with an option to turn it to 60 hz so why not buy the 120 and use it for sports, video games, action movies, and turn it off when watching non-fast paced shows or movies (dramas, soap operas). FYI I am not an expert. I learned this from www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2379206,00.asp

  • @i1Pain1i
    @i1Pain1i 9 років тому +3

    If i call corectly half of the hz is the framerate the tv can output. So 60hz is 30 fps max and 120 hz is 60 fps max. Furthermore you have to consider if its LED for the lamp being used and image quality. Also turn off the frame smoothing crap. If youre watching tv a 60 hz tv is perfectly fine fpr normal stuff unless it is LED because when things start moving on screen, such as in action movies, it would not outperform, in terms of quality of the images, an LCD screen. LED i would go 120 hz for normal tv because the smoothing can help with image quality. When gaming, well, that is a whole other discussion.

    You cant see the true benefits of a 120hz monitor on a 60hz monitor (don't be fooled by this video). Plus you will not notice the difference of a 120hz monitor unless the media you are using exceeds the refresh rate that 60hz provide. Most films (with the exception of the Hobbit and maybe others) are filmed in 24 frames per second. So regardless to whether you have 60 or 120hz you are only going to see the image/frames refresh 24 times per second, with 60/120hz merely providing smooth transitions. 120hz becomes useful for gaming, where an advanced rig can often exceed 60 fps and needs a monitor that can refresh over 60 times per second to keep up. The human eye sees at 60 fps (so to speak), so the need for a 120hz monitor is debatable. I still want one though.

      May I add that this video is also in 24fps. So of course you wont see a damn difference. Notice the frames in the video, both screens are changing frames at the same rate. Try both videos on a 120hz monitor, one video with a frame rate of 60fps and another at 120fps, then you'll see the difference (not really though, because you'll be watching on a 60hz monitor).

      Ryko Moffat Of course, but this is a TV comparison (as said in the title), not a monitor one. It is aimed for people watching movies, tv shows and console gaming (which is max 60fps). Manufacturers claims that even for console gaming it improves the blur.
      For a PC monitor, it is a different story. Even though it is possible on some TVs to output a 120fps signal, currently there is no TV that officially supports it. The only official way to get 120 frames per second on a TV is with motion interpolation, which can't be used for gaming due to the input lag increase.

      Rtings.com ok so if I may ask you. I'm thinking of buying a LED TV this month and I'm going to play console games (PS4 and PS3). Should I get 60hz or 120hz for console gaming? My games will be something like JRPG, RPG, Strats, GTA5, Final Fantasy 13, uncharted 3, etc. What would you recommend for me to buy? Will there be a huge or even a big difference between the two or not as much?
      Cause as you know, i can get a 1080p 60hz led hdtv for like 200 to 250 bucks while 120 is from 350 and up. and i dont really want to spend money on 120 when 60hz will do for the games i play.
      I don't want to make a mistake in buying these expensive stuff.

    We can't really tell the difference because the monitors through which we're watching this video are most likely at 60Hz. Mine is at least.
    Also, things will really change when the first HFR 60p movies will start to appear around and hopefully TVs will add support for a 60p true playback mode.
    24p is by no mean the maximum smoothness and video fluidity, it's actually the least possible. There's a huge difference between 24p and 60p, 120p and even 240p.
    I hope things will change as soon as possible.

    • @Vylkeer

      Brian Smith I guess you can get the difference with any monitor, but to fully appreciate a 120fps video you should use a 120Hz monitor.

    No offense but this doesn't really prove much. If you give it the same rendered video there will be no difference between the two. Both will cover 24 frames in the same time interval. If you do the same test on a PC with a graphics card outputting at least 120 fps, then you will see that for every one frame outputted from the 60hz monitor, two will output from the 120 Hz.

  • @gatorage850
    @gatorage850 10 років тому +2

    what to point of this the frame rate is 24??? if you have a lower frame rate then the TV it can make more lag... this is why most everything is 60Hz and most TV that are listed at more then 60Hz are lying. its just a modded 60Hz TV with fake frames and flashing lights to trick your brain. not saying there no such thing as 120Hz the one on the right look 120Hz it look to have a lower response and it look like it has more lag running at 24fps if i was to guess i would say its a true 120Hz but i dont know how it was tested.

      Gatorage john I know this is a year old comment, but ugh I have to respond to this.
      Here's a *real* 144Hz display: www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=24-236-466
      No motion blur, just true 144FPS action.

    • @gatorage850
      @gatorage850 9 років тому

      ***** yes that is true but if you run it with a GPU that can only handle 24FPS there a chance 144 fps screen could have more blur (than the 60 fps or less screen) unless the monitor has as a way to fix it. which many high end monitor do. but keep in mind response time in gaming is more importing than FPS. 4ms is kinda on the slow side. most professional gamer play on a 1-2ms. the Monitor i use is a VS247H-P it's not the best but for the price i would say it up there but only if you dont play games over 80fps (which how really needs that).

    • @Rudenbehr
      @Rudenbehr 9 років тому +1

      Gatorage john GPUs can handle an infinte number of frames depending on the workload. I'm not a professional gamer, I'm sure you're not so the difference between 4 and 1ms are just nitpicks.

    • @gatorage850
      @gatorage850 9 років тому

      ***** a GPU cant even handle infinite numbers of still frames there a limited to what it can hold and the speed it can push it. well like you can see the blur from 144 to 60 i can feel the imput lag from 1 to 4 it is a much higher advantage!!! on first person shooter it's harder to tell(unless it's real bad) a lot of that to do with internet speed unless you play on LAN but it will help. if your good on a racing game where you need to hit a point of a turn you might can tell better... i know i can tell from my 5ms tv to my 2m monitor but there many way they test ms (like hp in cars one dyno will say 300 next will say 315) so my tv could be slower than listed or the other way around. the first game i played (Trials HD) i felt it right away but i have race R/C for many years so i bet i feel/see response time a little more than most. i wrote this cuz many people think that you FPS is input lag so they buy a much more expensive TV with crazy high Hz/fps to fix it and most the time it does cuz of faster response time. but in a LCD the higher the FPS/Hz the harder it is for the monitor to keep up with input lag. so a 144hz with 1ms is hard to do and would cost a lot + the monitor you show is in the middle of 1080hd and 4k so cost even more to get the to get the ms down. i bet most people would over look that tiny bit of speed for how good that thing must look only a 27'' with that many pixel even more so if you are pushing 144fps!!!

    • @Rudenbehr
      @Rudenbehr 9 років тому

      Gatorage john It's just not as big of an issue as you make it seem though. I'll take a 1440p, 144Hz IPS LCD display anyday over a little unnoticeable lag. My skill in those games you listed will more than compensate for the hardware disadvantage.

    I'm not somebody is truly understands the technology on more than basic level, but based off this video the difference between the two seems to be very very little if anything...initially I thought the 120HZ was a little faster, but truthfully I don't think that was really the case
