Very good sounding pickup and the 250Hz option in the mid control is great. Low mids are the most important in the overall tonal spectrum of the bass and boosting 250 Hz a bit helps gluing it together with the drums. I'd say it's the best sounding set so far and the tone is much more important than "bells and whistles" you're talking about. However, the price tag on the preamp and the necessity to modify the cavity is rather daunting. And yeah, the knobs. I guess it would be a much better set for a custom made Stin gray-inspired bass than for a cheap SUB.
Signature Bartolini electronics sound, warm tight low end, definitely a bump in the low mids, high mids kinda subtle but not harsh, and smooth highs. Not everyone's cup of tea, but still a good tone from a good bassist.
I put a Bartolini in my Reverend a few years back. The boost in the lows and mids that thing is capable of is insane. Someone could easily blast your speakers out of their cab if they picked it up and unknowingly dimed it.
Cool demo...The bartolini preamp sounded really good. real smooth and versatile. I've got a bartolini preamp on my Ibanez bass and it sounded amazing. it's a major improvement in versatility. and coming soon, a set of barts on my ibanez bass. I like how bartolini preamps and pickups sounds. very dynamic and has an incredible punch to it. best of all, they sound killer with distortion pedals. \m/

I still think I would go for the Aguilar or Nordstrand mods though, but I'll save my final judgement for the super video at the end where you compare them all. 👍 BTW, It would be fun to do this same thing with Precision and Jazz basses.
Same. I like the Nordy followed by the Aguilar though. A little different, but I really like the both of them so far. Really curious how the Seymour Duncan stacks up to them.
I don’t know about this one. It has a lot of different tones but they don’t blend well. The thin sounds are nice, but kind of weak when coming from one of the other tones. I feel like you’d be adjusting your amp a lot, If you’re using the different tones in a band setting. Maybe stay passive with this one. But that’s just my (probably completely damaged ) ears. I’ll try it again on headphones later. Tre stereo in the truck can be deceiving. Not my favorite so far, but they can’t all be the best. Thank you for sharing, you are awesome. Cheers
Imho i had very high hopes for bartolini, it is great no doubt , but it's not like night and day from say Nordstrand... yes its clearer but for me it's still not the best price, tone combo still.... my pick is till that yellow ray 24 lol ... it tra stormed into something which really soothing and with its own identity !
That preamp is a whole lotta hassle with the need to change pots along with removing control cavity material to get it to fit...no thanks. But thanks to you for showing us what not to do! Mods should be fun and rewarding, not a pain in the shell hole. The fist-pounding cat shirt is great, cat daddy lobster!
That was not the tone I was expecting from the Bartolini. Much clearer and more high sizzle than I would figure from a "usually" darker and more midrange sounding pickup from Bartolini. Pleasantly surprised.
Have a stock Mike Lull modern 4 # 238 with a Bartolini NTMB per- amp, two Lindy Fralin jazz bass pick- ups, ash body with figured maple top, Brazilian rosewood fretboard. Versatile bass with an array of tones.
Still liking the EMG best as an overall option so far... Seems like Bartolini has a good pickup here though, can’t decide if I like it or the EMG pickup best. This pickup paired with the JE pre would probably be pretty sweet.
I agree, but I'm biased against bartolini preamp. i had a ltd rb1005 that i had to sell, i loved everything about that bass. so when I had a chance to replace it, I found a used one that now sits unused because someone replaced the Aguilar pre with a bartolini I figured the strings were just crap, but nope.
I like Barts a lot, but preamp wise I have to agree that for this SUB it would not be my choice. Maybe I’d mix this pup with another preamp brand - for this SUB.
Again, this combo sounded pretty great but it doesn't sound like the preamp is quite with it. Did sound pretty good but with so many other good options, I cannot imagine going with the preamp, even if I did get the pickup. It's difficult/impossible to separate the pickup from the preamp sound but I'd be tempted to go with this pickup and another preamp if selecting something more expensive than the Tone Monster.
I really like the midrange. Finally something warm from StingRay. I'm curious if it's a pickup or preamp. I'm looking for sth like that for my stingray - not boomy bass, warm, growly midrange (but not harsh) and not harsh treble which makes me headache. John East preamp sound great but here this 250hz mid is what I probably need with this bass.
Thanks Jakub! I really like this pickup a lot too, I think the majority of the tone is that. The East MMSR can also target that mid freq (and so many more!) and is a nice drop in replacement with no soldering needed. The bart pre here was a PITA and required cavity modification (def wasn't made for stingray cavity). I think the Bart+East combo would be killer!
So far, I think the EMG or the Nordstrand is my favorite but honestly I am really looking forward to some Seymour Duncan (if you have it) as I remember with the ESP LTD GB-4 that preamp was a MONSTER! So I am assuming it will do wonders for this bass!
Great question Andrei! Short answer- it depends. The 5 string MM pickup comes in two forms, the rectangle and the traditional shape with the little nubs on the top and bottom. The 4 string replacement pickups are all one-size-fits-all, so the 4's are a bit easier to mod. The 5's may require some routing or a different pickguard depending on the shape of the pickguard.
I am about done with off the shelf preamps unless they're doing something special like a DSP or something. CLFR doesn't need a battery to give a treb boost to its tenor guitars and doesn't need a battery to give boom to its basses...I think every person who didn't start off playing bass at birth is like "dafu all this electronic crap in between me and cable" when they pick up something outside of your standard J/P bass. Also note that Bartolini is *extra noted* for their fretless tones, historically. This guitar would sound epic if you pulled the frets and epoxied the board. I think I might just epoxy this bass carcass I got right over the frets and then run it down to where it originally would be set up for. This thing is amazing. But I guess I have to figure out a channel of my own for that content. But I definitely need a Hohner B bass Pro VI in my life at some point here, in the somewhat near future. I like the Washburn MB6 I got but I think I would like the Hohner better and it's a neck through maple, which is you know, something I have been digging for a while in my instruments, particularly basses. the neck profile on the near destroyed V I have received is amazing tho...changes from baseball batty at the nut to more contoured flatty near the heel, it's odd but I like it and it's VERY comfortable. I have the original EMG in it, I would love to have the original preamp because it's supposed to be a badass mofo that will slag your voice coils if you don't give continuous respect to it at all times. Los Lonely Boys is part of what started my mission to at least wrap my hands around a Hohner B VI at some point. ua-cam.com/video/Ce5UKfMnWmg/v-deo.html
Interesting! You know I didn't realize I purchased the FL preamp originally haha. That being said, I'd hope the greater mid focus would benefit the stingray tone but it didn't as much as I liked. Oh man, LLB, brings me back to the 2000's ahahaha... How faaaar is heeeaaaveeeennn ;P
@@LowEndLobster So I just received my sub ray 4 and unscrewed the control plate to take a glimpse of it and I'm not sure exactly what I'm looking at. Can you please explain where exactly I will be soldering the new pickup wire on to? Thanks

The preamp seemed to be a total clack-fest 👎🏻, but I find it interesting that the bass frequency is centered at 30hz.
