Update: FCA sent around a TSB highlighting to dealers why you CAN NOT use a Gen 2 style oil filter on the Gen 3 engine. The pressure relief valve and internals in the filter housing are different. I assume they made the Gen 3 filter to be a one-piece unit like this so that it would stand out as being different and get the attention of the person doing the oil change. Make sure you use ONLY a Gen 3 engine oil filter if your engine is a 2020+.
I really appreciate you sharing your experience and advice. With 5,016 miles, I just changed my oil & filter on my 2020 Ram 1500 Limited ecodiesel. I also installed the fumoto valve. Thanks again.
Future reference, I use Tin Foil to make a little trough for draining the oil. If you don’t have a Fumoto. You can fold it up around the two lines by the drain hole.
The video I needed thanks I'm going to pick my truck up in September you just saved me money this will be my first diesel and my Subaru Forester I change the oil my self this truck is simple to change my self again thanks👍🏽
Ive been thinking about the oil drain valve installation? Please correct me if I'm wrong, when you remove the drain plug, the oil in the pan freely flows out of the drain hole where the OEM plug was removed, however with the Fumoto drain valve installation, the valve stem that screws into the oil pan is higher than the bottom of the pan and therefore won't allow all of the oil, and more importantly, the sludge and debris on the actual bottom of the pan to drain out because the stem drain hole sits higher. I would think after a few oil changes a considerable amount of sludge will start to accumulate on the bottom of the oil pan.
Interesting they changed the filter that way. I changed my oil on my Gen 2 myself many times before I traded it. I wonder if the engineers thought gen 2 filters were not being clipped into the housing properly as a cause of the failures? In Canada they wanted 285 dollars for a gen 2 oil and filter, I could only imagine what they would want with that new filter assembly. Thanks for the video at least you know your oil change is done right.
Good information. Be sure to shop for the oil filters. The dealership wants $94.00 for them, you can find them on line for about half that amount. I hope you marked the box for soot check on the oil sample testing. I'm close to my first gen-3 change and I will get the soot test when I send mine in. Depending on what it shows for soot, I may install a bypass oil filtration system on mine. Thanks for the video!!
I'm getting my filters from dieselfiltersonline.com for around $45 bucks for oil, $37 for fuel. It's good to know that the fuel filter is shared with the Cummins trucks so that there'll be cheaper options in the future.
I purchased my 2020 eco diesel about a month ago and I’m really new to ram and eco diesels. Thanks for the video’s. Could you possibly make a video on the fuel filter and what’s your thoughts on first oil change (mileage) and what mileage after that to keep warranties. Thanks.
Stupid question: Is that diesel oil? It looks like gas engine synthetic. I service a 2015 Jeep GC with the ecodiesel. I use the Shell Rotella T 5w40. 8 quarts...
Didn't see a follow-up video on the results of the oil lab test. Did you post one and I'm missing it? Wondering what the results were. Thanks for posting.
I looked at a 21 just the other day, and was shocked when the service department told it was 179.00 to do a oil change on this engine. I paid 139.00 for three services on my current gas 5.7 engine. Cant see the big difference both take 8+ quarts of oil and a filter.. Thanks for the video
Thank for video. I'm not sure if do it myself is worth it. My dealer charge me $217.36 and if cost of parts are around $100 and I change oil around 10000 miles or once every 9 months then over span of 10 years you save around $1300, maybe litte more because inflation. Yes you spend more if you add up everything else, but it is exactly the same on everything else, starts from groceries to buying a house. I'm not here to fight, just my thoughts. FYI: you gain new subscriber.
Question, when do you need to do the 4 wheel drive service? I.E. front and rear diffs. and transfer case? I have 45.000 miles on mine and dealer is saying 4 wheel service is due, sounds way to early to me. Thanks....
Just did my oil change at a local dealership & they charged me around 350 bucks …121 bucks for an oil filter…got me once won’t happen again doing it myself in the future!!!
Hello I like your videos and maybe you have answered this before but what video contains the results of the oil analysis from the first change on the ram eco diesel?
I have a 2020 diesel Ram truck. The Oil filter is very expensive. Do you know If it's possible to change to the element filter only ? I paid $70 for the oil filter. Do you know where can i get a cheaper oil filter?
Just went to the dealership for my first oil change, I was shocked at the price. Thanks for the video, looking to start doing my own oil changes. Will doing it yourself cause any issues down the road with Chrysler’s guarantee?
Im a guy who are preffer to do it itself but : How much did you pay? My dealer charge me exactly $217.36 for oil change. If you think about it that not this expensive. If oil and filter cost you around $100 and you need to spend around 90 min do do it ( properly drain diesel oil takes around 45 min) plus if you have warranty on the truck you know you did not validate anything.
@@cezarymalinowski1730 2022 Ram 1500 Rebel EcoDiesel. I had my first oil change done at the dealer when the oil life indicator told me to. It was right about 8,000 miles. Cost was $300 at the dealer where I bought it. I about shi* myself when I got the bill. I didn't have a clue going in how much it would be as this is my first truck and first diesel.
@Scott Allen hey, I just did change the oil in my 2021 eco diesel first time by myself. I get a Mopar filter for $64 and Shell T6 5W-40 10 gallons of oil for around $120. Took me a little over an hour to do it. The problem I run into was draining. So I ordered a Fumoto drain valve to install next time I do the oil change. The Fumoto valve cost me around $30. So the total cost without a valve is around $180-190. I'm not sure if that is worth it, maybe overtime.
Questions: what is the process of sending "back" oil samples for analysis. Where do we send the sample to? How can i start that process? What's the cost?
Check out Oil Analyzers and Blackstone Labs online. It's usually around $35 to send off a sample and get your oil analyzed and their sites have all the info on how to get the kit you'll need to collect the sample.
The oil in this video is actually stamped with the MS-12991 cert right there on the bottle. They must have reformulated it recently. Last I spoke with them, they told me they stand behind their product in the EcoDiesel application regardless of whether it has the MS-12991 stamp on it or not, but, they were working toward updating their sheets to get the "Euro" version approved. I guess they never did! If you can find the bottles with the MST 5W40 labeling, they should be stamped MS-12991 on the back.
dieselfiltersonline.com sells Gen 3 filters for 50% off list price. Due to COVID and supply chain interuptions, I'd recommend ordering a few weeks before you'll need them.
If you're saying that because of the oil color, diesel oil looks like that about 500 km after an oil change. It's just the way the new ones work with the egr system.

When you remove the oil filter does it leak oil at all or does it have a check valve? I have a 2020 ED and will be doing my first oil change soon.

What is the oil quantity on these gen 3 engines? Owner's manual says 8.5q, but I've read online, that is for jeeps, and the ram is 10.5q
