In the case of this song, the people they are singing about are either people drafted by the Swedish before 1809, Finnish volunteers to the Finnish Guards Rifle Battalion (you were considered "asevelvollinen", "obligated to bear arms" if you volunteered) or people drafted between 1902 and 1904 by Russia into the Russian military as a part of their russification campaign. In addition, "välskäri" does not mean "flashlight" but rather a field-surgeon. It's loaned from the swedish term "fältskär", field surgery.

I love when Ingen puts out videos about Finnish songs, but his translations leave something to be desired. I understand though, the sometimes poetic sentences are hard to translate into English. Välskäri doesn't mean flashlight, it's just a very old word for a field doctor. The correct sentence would (literally translated) be "The doctor turned and the field medic/doctor twisted". Flashlight is Taskulamppu.
