i live in atlanta, and yes the traffic is horrible. what i love about atlanta is the norfolk southern and csx lines leading from tilford and inman yards. i used to work for railcrew express out of tilford about a year ago.

I actually was down here for myself for the first time on Thanksgiving. I was in shock that how big of a railroad town Atlanta really is. I spent an afternoon and evening in Austell (which I discovered actually from you on this channel) and I was pretty satisfied leaving as from 12 noon to 6:30 pm I saw nearly 20 trains on Norfolk Southern. I did not check out CSX all that much. But judging from the hotel we stayed in Atlanta I knew they had to be just as active as Norfolk Southern is.
Ah, you came so close to Chattanooga, so close! Next time you may want to spend more time in dalton, but give yourself another day to explore Chattanooga. So many incredible spots with fantastic backdrops. “Coffey’s Cliff” being one

I drove a truck for a while after leaving the railroad and was driving thru Atlanta after dropping a hotshot load in Jacksonville, it was a touch of winter going on and it was snowing ever so slightly. I was headed north on I-75 and the Georgia State Troopers was trying to close the highway because of less than an inch of snow on the road surface! Unbelievable! When the trooper I was arguing with saw the company name on the truck door AND the city, (Denver), he let me drive on. GREAT video!
Michigander here now living in GA. They close schools if there's even a chance of flurries the next day. Police on the news assuring everyone that search and rescue teams are on standby and the stores are empty of bread milk etc. I just laugh my ass off at em!
I used to pull paperboard loads out of International (formerly Federal paper) in Augusta. Periodically, the mill that makes the board we hauled, would go down, so we'd have to wait for a load. I'd sometimes get a room in Augusta, just for a good rest and to have a shower. One night there was snow or freezing rain in the forecast. I'd had a 2-hr nap and a shower, and got up around 7pm. Wanted to get something to eat, but everything around the motel was shut down tight... Wendy's, McDonald's, Pizza Hut... I couldn't find anything around open, and not so much as one drop of rain or a snowflake yet. Had to settle for a Coke and a bag of chips from a gas station, and even THAT was on the verge of closing down... The doors were locked, I had to shout my order into a speaker, push money through a metal box, and she put the chips, the coke, and my change back out to me through the box. The storm didn't hit until the next afternoon, but everyone was so freaked out about it, they all started preparations the night before. I couldn't believe it.
Back in 2002, when Salt Lake City hosted the Winter Olympics, a major change began. The old Union Pacific Depot became a lease-out for parties of all sorts, with full catering. It also became the centerpiece for The Gateway, a large outdoor mall. where the railyard used to be is now filled with sidewalks and gardens. The freight yard is about a mile north of the old Depot. South of the mall is the home of the Utah Transit Authority, and a lot of the bus lines start there. Also starting there is the main TRAX line (our commuter train) and its extension, FrontRunner, which is the heavy rail train running north to Ogden and south to Provo. The AmTrak "depot" is a tiny two-room shack south of the TRAX lines, which is all they need since AmTrak only passes through Salt Lake once a day, and that's at around 3 A.M. So we've already gone through what you talked about at the beginning of your video. I hope you have good luck with it.

The W&A is my main line and I really wish I could’ve seen you. If you ever come back to the W&A you’ll probably notice that the line has changed a lot. Ever since COVID and precision scheduled railroading, all of the intermodal traffic has been rerouted thru the S&NA in Alabama. Trains Like Q241 is now abolished. The line gets about 15 trains a day 20 on a good day. You should also check out the Cartersville sub which goes to the giant coal plant, plant Bowen in stilesboro, as well as the Etowah sub which diverges off the W&A in Cartersville. There only about four trains a day but there’s great scenery, lots of industries, yard action and lots of local action.
Speaking as someone who has only recently moved to ATL and has been wondering about the railroading landscape... this comes along at the perfect time! Can't wait to see more!

Another great video, Danny. Howell Jct (formerly Howell Tower) is a very busy location, even without the traffic to Tilford Yard. Worth a long visit. Perhaps in Vol 2 you can include present day shots of former Tilford Yard, which has been completely removed, as well as Hulsey Yard (Ex-Ga RR) and Bellwood Yard (ex-AB&C), which are completely shut down. Current active yards are Howell (ex=SAL) lots of transloading and Fairburn (new by CSX), intermodal.
@@Edsavage404 Old Hulsey Yard (ex-Ga RR) was bulldozed and rebuilt as an intermodal terminal in the early 1980's. Since then the new CSX intermodal yard in Fairburn has been increased in capacity and has more room to expand. Hulsey had no room to expand, and the area around it is developing as a new intown residential area. Nice to see you stomping in my home territory! Very nicely done! A few things to note, that local you saw in Cartersville was A703, local turn from Cartersville to the GNRR at Elizabeth. Speaking of Elizabeth, you are correct about N Elizabeth. GNRR usually handles the traffic set off by A703, and more often handles grain traffic to Canton at the Pilgrims Pride grain elevator. The next time you’re up (on a weekday), is recommending checking GNRR out! You’ll love the power those GP38s pull with a loaded grain train!
Man that brought back memories. I’m a resident of N GA and have railfanned there of course. The GA Northeastern handles fright traffic exclusively for CSX, carrying things such as marble, chicken, and chemicals between Marietta and south Tennessee. A connection was in order to North Carolina that led to every bit of trackage being completed up until one property between GA and NC needed to finish the line. The owner held out against millions and multiple offers, and thus, the line wasn’t completed. So, those tracks are now used by GA Northeastern as the tourist attraction that is the Blue Ridge Railway, which begins at the split of the northward tracks to Tennessee or North Carolina and follows the scenic route towards Carolina. Make sure you visit Austell GA before you leave. All NS traffic between Inman Yard and Chattanooga/Birmingham goes through there. You’ll see KCS, BNSF, and UP power there, and Amtrak passes through early in the morning and late at night too. 60+ trains per day and an extremely popular spot to film. Even has a little area right in front of the city hall with benches right next to the tracks.
LaMarcus Ballinstone Some of this information is wrong. The Blue Ridge Scenic railroad runs on the tracks from Blue Ridge to Macaysville/Copperhill. From Copperhill to Etowah, TN is the Hiwassee River Railroad. CSX operated those tracks until about 2001 when the copper mine in Copperhill closed for good. That whole stretch from Elizabeth to Etowah was the L&N originally. The part you were talking about that went to North Carolina was pulled up in the late 70s. It split just north of Blue Ridge and went through Mineral Bluff, Ranger, and on into Murphy where it connected with the Southern’s Murphy Branch. The only part left is the small section from Blue Ridge to Mineral Bluff. It’s out of service as far as I know and no scenic trains have ran on it for years. Also, there has been no talk what so ever of rebuilding that line. When the line was pulled out, the right of way reverted back to the land owners. Plus, the Murphy Branch is out of service into Andrews and Murphy. The Great Smokey Mountains Rainroad only runs down to the Nantahala Outdoor Center now a days. A connection to Murphy would be pointless.

I’ve always wondered why they left that little bit from Blue Ridge to Mineral Bluff. I’ve never been about to find anything about any customers near Mineral Bluff that lead them to leave that part. It might have been the GA DOT bought whatever’s they could.
Before L&N had Tilford Yard,it was Hills Park Yard built and maintained by Nashville Chattanooga & St. Louis RR(whom took over from Western & Atlantic after the Civil War) which was absorbed by L&N in 1957(they already owned them since the 1800s). Although CSX still operates the much smaller Howell yard(Former Seaboard Ar Line) their presence in the city has been shrunk quite a bit..especially with Husley yard(Built by the Georgia Railroad) now also closed. My guess is the tax savings by not being in the Atlanta city limits was too great to ignore. The Fairburn,Ga. hub on the former shared Central Of Georgia/Atlanta &West Point line is now their biggest facility until you get to Rice yard in Waycross,Ga.
The track layout at Dalton is fascinating! Two separate railroads coming together usually leads to some interesting things. Great stuff, can't wait for part 2!
Q241 actually on its initial way south traverses the CSX Toledo Subdivision through Deshler and my hometown of Lima, Ohio on it's way south to Cincinnati and points south. Just a bit of info.

I'm a truck driver. Our only hopes for Atlanta are it getting levled in some cataclysmic event . Or they build a proper bypass that takes you all the way around without letting local traffic have access to it .

The csx was tired of paying higher city taxes every year and moved there yard futher south but it does not have a hump hill. The n.s. is building one north of town and will close theres also
I would say that it's ridiculous that CSX would do that in Atlanta, esp. when in my opinion, we have not found a better way to move large amounts of goods & equipment other than by train. I also wish that it wasn't happening in my city, but we've got some rail property being converted to mixed-use crap too - but on the other hand, my city is working on improving & expanding at least 1 of our mass transit rail lines. Excellent work as usual. Can't wait for Part 2. Howell Junction is THE place for Atlanta railfanning! 10th St NW off Brady Ave NW there is a parking lot (be careful for glass on road) You see all the action and no one will bother you. Be aware of surroundings but you'll be fine in daylight hours.
Thanks! I stumbled into Howell Jct. this past July, but didn't know what it was. I stayed for about an hour, but was worried about getting blocked in there if something came up for a crew change, so I left. Definitely going back there. I've got it flagged on my GoogleMaps list.

the word on CSX is that tilford is getting rebuilt. hulsey yard is gone, and Howell yard cant keep up with traffic.

Q241 actually on its initial way south traverses the CSX Toledo Subdivision through Deshler and my hometown of Lima, Ohio on it's way south to Cincinnati and points south.

I'm a truck driver. Our only hopes for Atlanta are it getting levled in some cataclysmic event . Or they build a proper bypass that takes you all the way around without letting local traffic have access to it .

Great to see the old haunts again Danny. When I was volunteering at the RR museum up there and working the fan trips out of Atlanta we fanned a lot of this just before and after the NS merger. Good times.
Awesome video Danny! Dalton sure is an interesting spot. Being an NS fan, I certainly liked seeing you capture two examples NS' latest rebuilds, the EMD SD70ACU and GE C44C6M.
The csx was tired of paying higher city taxes every year and moved there yard futher south but it does not have a hump hill. The n.s. is building one north of town and will close theres also
source for that? if NS moves closer to me I'd love that

I would say that it's ridiculous that CSX would do that in Atlanta, esp. when in my opinion, we have not found a better way to move large amounts of goods & equipment other than by train. I also wish that it wasn't happening in my city, but we've got some rail property being converted to mixed-use crap too - but on the other hand, my city is working on improving & expanding at least 1 of our mass transit rail lines. So, there's bad & good. Thanks, Danny!

Clearly you've never been to Houston lmao I have family in Chicago and agree that the drivers their are as crazy as it gets but traffic in Houston is only getting worse....PS we are the fastest growing city in the US annually.

Marietta is a great place for summer railfanning cool evenings, great people and of course lots of traffic usually.

Excellent work as usual. Can't wait for Part 2. Howell Junction is THE place for Atlanta railfanning! 10th St NW off Brady Ave NW there is a parking lot (be careful for glass on road) You see all the action and no one will bother you. Be aware of surroundings but you'll be fine in daylight hours.
Thanks! I stumbled into Howell Jct. this past July, but didn't know what it was. I stayed for about an hour, but was worried about getting blocked in there if something came up for a crew change, so I left. Definitely going back there. I've got it flagged on my GoogleMaps list.
