I just started learning violin a month ago and I come to these videos to get inspired! Watching your techniques shows me there's SO much to learn. I can't find a good teacher near me that knows bluegrass/folk (they are all classical) so I'm learning by myself using google and watching your videos! Thank you so much for the awesome content.
I usually cop out and play this on my concertina - that third part is a real bugger on the fiddle! Hearing you playing it so cleanly has inspired me to give it another go. We mainly learn from working on the stuff we can't play rather than the stuff that comes easily... When I can play Random decently, perhaps I'll start calling myself a fiddler rather than a learner. By the way, Graham Dixon, editor of The Lads Like Beer, was a regular at our Scottish/Northumbrian session when the 1st edition came out. Random is attributed to Hill in the Northumbrian Piper's Society 1st Tunebook, but Graham couldn't find any evidence for this. It appears to be a corruption of a French Rondeau. It was likely played by Hill, but not composed by him.
Wow! I hear all the different bowings on the B tune, always varying your ornaments and expressions. Do you plan all your variations beforehand so as not to repeat yourself? You you remember how you last played that phrase so you can play it differently next time? Is it random?
Sounding great as ever!
