  • Luke Watson explains how to disconnect the trailer and the prime-mover. Uncoupling a trailer and tractor in the correct sequence is essential for the safety and longevity of your equipment.
    How To Uncouple a Trailer:
    Step 1 - find a safe and secure and flat area to park
    Step 2 - park brake on
    Step 3 - legs down
    Step 4 - disconnect air line and electrical cable
    Step 5 - release the jaws of the turn table
    Step 5 - drive away

    I was always told to use the word HELP. Which is hose electrical leg then pin or to hook up pin then leg electrical hose . Then brake test

  • @_.A.J._
    @_.A.J._ 3 роки тому +1

    I always pull the pin first (after the trailer brake if you want) then the legs, then hoses and electrical then I drive a bit forward like 50 cm, then I drop the air suspension of the prime mover so you can drive off without your trailer bumping off your prime mover. When the trailer is loaded, I always lift up the air suspension of the prime mover a bit AFTER pulling the pin.

    • @_.A.J._
      @_.A.J._ 3 роки тому

      When coupling the trailer I drive underneath the trailer a bit, stop before the pin, lift up the air suspension so the legs became loose of the ground, then I'll couple up the trailer. It will avoid your legs to bend and it will be easy to lift up the legs.

    • @petetherealrelentless6542
      @petetherealrelentless6542 Рік тому +1

      Horrible way to do it... if your trailer brakes aren't on and you pull the pin on a slight grade you will have a catastrophe on your hands... pull the pin last..
      DC the leads first, then wind the legs down then pull the pin.

    • @_.A.J._
      @_.A.J._ Рік тому

      @@petetherealrelentless6542 that's why I've said to pull the trailer brake first (optionally), of course it's always better to do it but I know most drivers (like me) won't do it most of the time anyway. I've drove around Europe and Australia, never had a problem with any trailer, just use common sense.

    • @petetherealrelentless6542
      @petetherealrelentless6542 Рік тому +1

      @@_.A.J._ except common sense would be to do it the fail proof way which is pulling the pin last. Doesn't matter how far or where you've driven.

    Can you please do a video on u turns & when the load is empty/full? My boss drilled me last week when I did a tight u turn! He said I am ruining the tires, causing flat spots when i do a tight u turn in a small space.

    • @ianwatsons
      @ianwatsons  Рік тому +1

      Yes - I will do some more videos. Yes - the trick is to turn the steering wheels as you are moving... not when your truck is stationary.

    Never seen the air taps on the suzies in the UK or EU - we just have the convenient quick couplings under full pressure. Hold on to them when you pull them otherwise they can knock your front teeth out if not paying attention

    • @J_Teriyaki
      @J_Teriyaki Рік тому

      From what I read people immigrating to Australia from, basically, a first world country can only get their car and motorcycle licences transferred over (New Zealanders all classes transferred except MC). But you could get a learner's permit for the type of vehicle that you are licensed to drive in Canada ie straight to semi trailer (class HC) lessons without having to drive a rigid truck (class HR) for at least one or two years. B-double (class MC) trucks are quite common in Australia even on arterial Metropolitan roads. If you don't do your test in a double clutch configured vehicle you get a transmission restriction on your licence. Truck drivers always needed. Come on down.

    one thing i noticed you didnt explain, as i was taught today is sometime you need to dump the air form the prime, do you do that also?

    • @_.A.J._
      @_.A.J._ 3 роки тому +1

      Yea you should or he needs to have a special reason for it not to do it. But I can't think of one. I think in all cases it's better for the prime mover and trailer.

  • @petetherealrelentless6542
    @petetherealrelentless6542 Рік тому +2

    Why wouldn't you DC the leads first? If you wind the legs down and get called away from the truck or receive a phone call or someone else jumps in the truck to move it or any number of distractions and find out you have to drop the trailer elsewhere or move to another site and forget the legs are down you will likely rip them off.. however if you only DC'd the leads you will effectively be doing no more than a tug test.
    So the safest and correct method would be:
    1) DC leads
    2) Wind legs down
    3 Pull the Pin.

    • @mickeymoto60
      @mickeymoto60 Рік тому

      I'm in total agreement. Always disconnect Lines first when uncoupling, then legs and pin last. As you said it only takes a slight distraction and it's bye bye airlines and electric plug if you make a habit of disconnecting them last.

      Now we need to talk about these drivers backing onto loaded trailers and doing their tug test while the legs are still down and in complete contact with the ground. 🤦‍♂ 😂
