Thanks Bruce, I've also noticed some other carvers also use a soft toothbrush. Seems to work just as well. Although my brush is still considerably softer than a toothbrush...
You have such a nice swivel knife ..I feel like the really good swivel knifes are so expensive and I am trying to build my leather working tools .I don't understand why the narrow blades swivel knifes are so pricey.I tried the plastic wrap trick and it worked really nicely !Very valuable tip!!! Great tutorial ...thanks so much!
Nice tutorial, I have alot of problems with packing tape shredding the back of my projects. Recommendation? Also as a beginner I’d recommend celtic knot patterns as they typically are Very easy to trace.
Packing tape will do that. If I'm making an product with art on it I make sure to apply a thin leather lining to the tooled area to cover the sticky or fiberous flesh side where the tape was before.
Hi Chris, just started leather carving, and one of my first projects was a small celtic treyarch design for a key fob, so the design has some very tiny line parts, like no more than 1/16 .Almost afraid some of the tiny ones might pop out if I push to hard or try and bevel the swival knife cuts or tap with any texture stamp. Some don't even look like you'll even see them! Help!
This is a great video, thanks for sharing it. I learned some good and valuable things. I just wish you'd show the stamps you're using up close, with a more detailed description of them or maybe even the Craftool number (even though not everyone uses that brand). Tips on technique would be great as well for newbies like myself (if it's not that kind of video please ignore me). Nonetheless, there's a lot of great info here. It's clear, easy on the eyes, and nicely presented. Very much appreciated.
What tools do you recommend for a beginner and where do you get your leather, dyes, stains etc. What’s the best paper to copy your design on? Are different leathers used for certain applications? Thank you for this tutorial.
Hi Cyndi, Great questions! If you are interested in tooling leather, then I would start out with a tooling kit. Tandy, Springfield, Weaver, and other suppliers sell some I believe. I buy my leather here and there. Sometimes online and sometimes through local suppliers. Leather is like gasoline. It's price is always fluctuating. So shop around... I buy a variety of stains from Eco-flo/Feibings/Craft Japan/and Seiwa. For printing my patterns A4/letter printing paper is fine. For leather, I use all vegetable tanned leathers. Depending on it's application I will use different thicknesses. The leathers weight is very important depending on what you are making and how it will function. For tooling leather I recommend between 5-10oz leather.
Muy hermoso no cabe duda que cada día se a prende algo lo Félisto por su trabajo tan fino que artesani me des pido con un saludo y una felisitasion de parte de su discípulo mexicano
When I put on ma leather, and rock to sum Metallica, Delta Parole, Foo Fighters or the Smashing Pumpkins I feel like I can do anything in the whole wide world.
When carving with a very sharp swivel knife or any knife, is it hard to maintain a certain depth for the carving? Are there any techniques you recommend to maintain a depth so that you do not cut through the leather at any point?
Very nice video, indeed. I have a question, maybe a little tricky... In your videos, you (and all the other carver from USA/GB) talk about the leather using the ounces. In Italy, where I live, we use a totally different way, and usually we refer to the thickness in millimeters. The are somewhere some conversion tables i can check? Because I'm a beginner and don't know what kind of leather seek. Thank you for your time.
Yes, there is. I also prefer mm to ounces when measuring the leathers weight, but ounces are what is familiar to the US... To find a conversation chart, just do a Google Search for a leather weight chart, or ounces to mm conversion chart. Hope this helps! Thanks for watching!
amanzing sir, I want to know where you get this design because I'm also an leather worker and want to do these design on my leather items...... So please advice me I'm from New Delhi, India
Yes, you could, or it could be used to decorate larger items with, such as a bag or purse. I originally wanted to make it for a leather box I was making. I was going to use the art to cover the top of the box with, but got busy and have put the project on hold.
That was beautiful!! I hope your channel has alot more uploads like this!!

Nice. I have all tools and stamps but do not have patience. It needs a lot of practices and bits of patience.
Yes, it does. But it's worth it! Keep trying...
That's pretty gnarly dood good job
great job. I also do leather carvings and I really like your work.
Amazing work. Subbed.

Seu trabalho é fantástico...🌷🙏😘
Chris, what did you use as a resist? Resolene?
I used a glossy sheen. About three thin coats.

@@FischerWorkshopsTaiwan thank you a lot!!
What do you do with the carving once done? Is it applied to something or is just mounted and framed? Just curious. Beautiful piece.
thanks !
What size barrel do you use for your swivel knife?
Wow👍🏻
It would be more helpful if in future videos, you would do a close up of each tool and the imprint of it after it is used in a specific location.
Good!
Beautiful! I'll definitely visit your site for this design. Did you end up using this for any particular project?
What is the thickness

Thats a cool design, but what do you do with it now, frame it?
Yes, you could, or it could be used to decorate larger items with, such as a bag or purse. I originally wanted to make it for a leather box I was making. I was going to use the art to cover the top of the box with, but got busy and have put the project on hold.
Fischer Workshops It would make a beautiful book cover.
Nice work!! What kind of swivel knife is that?
It's made by Barry King
Wow
Awesome video. Thanks for creating it.
Question: Did you apply the sheen to the light areas as well as the black?
Yes, I did. After the background was pointed in I applied sheen to the whole project. After it dried I applied the antique dye.
@@FischerWorkshopsTaiwan Thank you for that clarification.
super
👍

Very nice.. one tip though, clean your nails before doing closeup of your hands, makes your video look more profesional ;)
It's from the stain and is hard to remove. 😉
