- MBCI Choctaw language interview featuring Alexander Hickman, Lucille Cotton, and Tracie Gibson from th Crystal Ridge community in Winston county, MS. The interviewer is Priscilla Williams from MBCI Choctaw Tribal Language Program; it was recorded October 1, 2021.
We ask MISSISSIPPI CHOCTAW SPEAKERS to listen to the interviews that feature people from other communities, and to PLEASE leave comments about ‘dialect differences’ that you hear or words and phrases that you don’t recognize from your own community.
The collection of these interviews was funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH); transcription and translation were funded by MBCI, NEH, and the Administration for Native Americans (ANA); as well as by support from our partners.
My mind is blown. I’m a mixed of several tribes but didn’t learn the languages. I have been speaking in a language I call Mother Tongue for over 20 years and I’m hearing the same words here. What this taught me is that it’s truly embedded in our dna even if the mind can’t remember! The soul is a powerful force!
I know Lucille "Lōksi" Cotton. A very exceptional woman! She was the Director of the community center.

As a Houma woman, I feel connected to the Choctaw and even though my dad was from lafourche louisiana and spoke French. I can here the same tones and afflictions as when my dad used to talk

My last name pops my mother last name before she married was Ganaway her mother before she married she was a hooks and her mother was a Johnson and her mother before she married was a Jones Nancy Jones the founder of our family and her mother was a half choctaw from Lewisville Arkansas in Lafayette county Arkansas her dady was a slave after slavery the family migrated to Bowie county Texas around DeKalb TX my father mother father acy Davidson mother melvina was a choctaw her family and the Davidson came to Oklahoma with the trail of tears acy Davidson father Lawson Davidson was a slave the choctaws hide him and he married melvina and a lot of kids was born it been said that she had already had some kids before she married Lawson Davidson melvina and Lawson Davidson migrated to Bowie county Texas around hooks tx bought land in the late 1800s now here we are the descendants deep all around Bowie county Texas around DeKalb TX New Boston tx hooks tx Texarkana Texas Texarkana Arkansas area all over the world we deep
