    Hey,
Thanks for covering this. Kaushiki ji is one of India's finest classical musicians. Just so you know, such performances are not rehearsed to a script. These are sung impromptu on stage. Let me explain. This piece is based on Raga Bhimpalasi. A raga is a combination of musical notes and is sung in one scale for any given composition (some compositions may have scale changes). Similarly, the rythm is also set for either the entire piece, like in this case it is 16 beats. It can also vary with portions of the composition. This is not a lyrical. It is note based. In Indian Classical music we have ascending and descending 7 musical notes just like Do Re Me...These are - Sa re ga ma pa dha ni (ascending) and sa ni dha pa ma ga re (descending).
Raag Bhimpalasi is a pentatonic raga which goes like - :ni sa ga ma pa: ni sa (asc 5) and :sa ni dha pa ma ga re: sa (des 7).
When Kaushiki ji sings, she sings keeping in mind two things, the notes for ascension and descent are aligned to the above structure of the raga in all possible combinations (there are more technicalities, perhaps beyond the scope of this platform) and they get set into the beat pattern (You'll see the tempo increases or decreases based on the number of notes she sings per beat cycle). The same notes are sung in the above combination, mostly across 3 octaves of the selected scale. Such performances can go on for hours and usually last for the entire night at times. The singers do not think and sing. They have practised to a level that their throat (vocal chords, larynx, diaphragm, lungs etc.) develops a motor memory and can intelligently churn out the right notes and form a melody like a musical instrument. (#Taken)
This is the essence of vocal (or instrumental) training in Indian classical music. Each and every sound the performer makes is an independent musical note! If you see any of her interviews you will know how seriously she takes music, for this kind of music to be mastered they start at around age 3-4 practising 12-16 hours a day like a monk .She's the daughter of Pandit Ajay Chakroborty , Master of classical Music who was also her teacher.
    Keep going, cheers..

Thanks for covering it. Kaushiki is great India Classical singer and this piece is truly master piece. BTW at 5:31 she as asking the tabla player to slow down a bit. (in hindi she says thoda). If you will listen very carefully you will know the tabla player changing rhythm a bit. That is why these performances are great because these are sung impromptu on stage.

This is classical Indian style. She is performing a "chota khayal" which means "small idea" when translated.
I've trained myself in this style for decades and understand it well.
I can say Kaushiki Ji is probably one of the best female vocalists in classical style that we have today in India. Her talent is a true inspiration to the next generations in india. She has worked VERY hard at this since her childhood and for me is always a pleasure to listen to.
Kaushiki Madam....Thank u for ur talent, skill and most importantly your dedication to one of our most ancient arts.

She's singing Hindustani music from North India. My mom teaches Carnatic from South India which is very similar. In carnatic you start out with basic lessons that teaches you how to sing the notes and put the thalams (hand patting). Eventually you learn larger and more complex lesson plus krithis (songs). Finally at the end after a while you learn to improvise in the ragaams (scales) you've learned.

Howdy. I came across your video on the Eagles singing "Hotel California" and you got recommendations of good singers who were drummers (eg Phil Collins). One of the greatest female singers of all time (voted #94 of the 100 Greatest Singers of All Time by Rolling Stone in 2010) was a drummer. Karen Carpenter (with her brother Richard) of the Carpenters had multiple #1 hits and a Grammy winner in the 1970-80s was an accomplished drummer but became the front singer when her singing talent was recognized. She is among my 6 most favorite female singers of all time (other 5 are So Hyang, Morissette, Angelina Jordan, Lara Fabian, and Leah Salonga, all whom you have reacted to!).
Elton John called Karen as "one of the greatest voices of our lifetime". Paul McCartney said Karen had "one of the best female voices in the world-melodic, tuneful, and distinctive". Please react to "Close to You" by the Carpenters, where she plays the drums. You won't regret it.

You might have realised, that the scale is the just scale in most Indian singing (equitemporal would be jarring to the Indian classical ear). It could be why Western listeners often notice a purer note being hit in Indian classical singing. This recital is from darbar music festival in London (happens every year).
Getting microtones correct - despite the speed - is a key part of Indian singing. It’s why she also strums an instrument (swarmandal) that is tuned to the particular scale - or rather a convention called the bhimapalasi raaga -which requires you to ascend through "I,III minor,IV,V, VII minor and descend while (possibly) including all the seven notes. What she’s reciting is actually the Indian solfege itself for the most part (Sa - I, Re - II, Ga - III, Ma - IV, Pa - V, Dha - VI, Ni - VII). You might catch her saying the phrase sa-ga-ma-pa-ni-sa at 7:33.
She's free to improvise with this convention so she does what she likes (structurally) but she must also come back to the start of a 16-beat cycle saying the punchline-ja-ja-re-mandirwa (wa at the starting of the cycle) as well. This improvisational style - which developed in medieval India is called khyaal (

You will definitely not react to my recommendation, because nobody ever does. But I will tell you anyway. The drum player (tabla) in this video is the son of an even more legendary drum player, and he performs in this short video called "The magic of Taal Yogi", sings too. If you react to that, I can guarantee you will have a good time and a satisfied comments section. But I bet that you won't even read this comment, let alone react. As for Indian rock band, I recommend "Machi Bhasad" by Bloodywood, they're real metal.
EDIT: Also recommending "Raag Bhimpalasi - Niladri Kumar & Pandit Subhankar Banerjee" if you want to listen to some expert Sitar music. The drum player in that video is deceased, may he rest in peace.

Please do not conflate the types of music in India:
Classical - Kaushiki Chakraborty represents one style, Hindustani. There is another equally revered style Karnatic. These two styles are the basis of all music in India. They do share many commonalities but are also quite distinct. Singers of classical do not sing other forms of singing, they do not like the lack of technical depth in those forms. Rarely can some sing both forms of classical, but there are those that can.
Bollywood is movie playback. Lata is most popular. Many of these singers are excellent. They learn classical, but cannot march their technical skills. They are melodious but do not have the music scholarship of the Classical singers.
Pakistani singers - 100% Hindustani and lighter derivations . No such music as Pakistani music.
For classical singers, singing Bollywood is an artistic crime. There is not much disagreement on that. Lata would not be able to stand up to Kaushiki in competition. Another famous Bollywood singer is SP Balasubrahmanyam (Balu). He is superb, like Lata, but not classical Karnatic to give you a parallel from the other type.
Listen to Bombay sisters for example in Karnatic. There is a huge array of Karnatic singers as well. A very different style from Kaushiki’s.

Sorry, and I don't want to sound controversial or radical, but the truth is that there is no such thing as Pakistani music because there is no such civilization. It is and has always been Indian civilization, and thus all heritage belongs to us, just as there is no Iranian civilization or heritage; it will always be Persian. Now, when it comes to Indian classical music, all classical music originated, practiced, and offered in temples with god's blessings, which is why our music and dance forms are always spiritual, just like our festivals. If you go deeper, our festivals are to please various forms of nature and all natural forms and lives represented by a god...and when it comes to music, it also resonates with those natural formations.Other societies revolve around one person as a demigod, and then their festivities revolve around it...ours do not, albeit we worship a human form as an image, but we also connect with that natural energy.

This is Indian classical music form known as "Hindustani". This type of music is practiced in Northern part of India. Likewise, the southern part of India , there's another kind of classical music form called "Carnatic". Hindustani music belongs to "Hindustan" - that's present day India, Pakistan and Bangladesh. Carnatic means "ancient". By and large, both forms of classical musics have lots of similarities and some differences Most of these kinds of musicians undergo a rigorous training with guru (teacher) for at least 7 to 10 years.

that's pure Indian classical music... not commercial because not everyone like this music but it is definitely the very difficult type of music to learn and sing.

Why don’t you know? There’s Google. Are you telling me that all this wonderment that you show is only for the recording. Once off, you show *no* curiosity to check things out on Google. Why Google, you could start with the text written in the description.
But will you? Or just carry off pretend-pretend ingenue expression on the face? Hmmm. Let’s see. So far it’s only ‘let me know’. How about finding stuff. It’s easy.
