Thank you❤🌹 so much for the detailed explanation! The tabla and harmonium added as pakkavadyam shows you really have a broad mind to bring them under the umbrella of Carnatic music...
It is great you can hear that in the music. Yes, it is indeed Dorian on the ascent and Aeolian on the descent. As Ms. Charulatha Mani explains, there is another related raga Bhairavi which is also Dorian/Aeolian has a different identify, shape and aesthetics. It is in the numerous and varied inflections and contours of going from one note to the other. I often wonder if music fans outside of this culture experience the same emotion from ragas like Indians do
Well, I'm Indian...for whatever it's worth. But I'm not from India nor do I have any Carnatic background. I'm an American blues musician, which is probably why I like the Dorian/Aeolian combo so much :P I believe rhythm and melody know no race. I love music from all over the world. Indian music only has a special place in my ear because of my Mom. Thank you for mentioning the Bhairavi raga. I will look into that one more too!
This raga when done right makes me cry. And Charulatha made me cry. Very well done. Especially for 10 seconds starting at 11 Minutes 17 seconds made me quite teary eyed. Wow! She brought out the one aspect and emotion of Mukhari in such distilled and succinct form It makes me teary eyed not because of sadness, as Charulatha explained. It is hard to put into words. It is in the same league as a lot of people become quite emotional and even weep when the story is told, especially in Bharathanatyam, of Yaśodā opening Child Krishna's mouth and she sees the whole universe there. It is Adbhutha but even that does not quite capture it. Flashes of Mukhari, as in the above 10 seconds, gets to me in a similar manner.

For those western music aficionados, this raga floats back and forth between the Dorian and Aeolian modes. Beautiful.
