  • We’ve previewed it and detailed the Detroit production facility, but now Fleet Equipment finally got its hands on the new Detroit DD5 engine outfitted in the Freightliner M2106. Yountville, California, is nestled in the heart of Napa Valley and was the perfect place to put the DD5 through a mock pick-up-and-delivery route. I talked with Chris Moran, MDEG program manager for Daimler Trucks North America, about the new engine as the company readies it to roll onto roads.
The DD5 is a 5.1 liter, four-cylinder engine, which is squarely aimed at P&D applications right out of the gate. Four-cylinder engines are a growing trend in the medium-duty segment, particularly in P&D, and you might be thinking: Can a four-cylinder engine get the job done? I put that question to Chris for his take on the trend.

I'm sceptical. all I saw was flat level ground. load it up with 26,000 lbs and hit some western Pennsylvania hills. and see how she compares to the 6.7 cummins trucks we have.

Ian Craig it hauls ass. Our company has the ISB’s and the DD5’s, i was convoying with a driver from Youngstown to Pittsburgh, other driver had the ISB, i had the DD5, hauling up off the beaver river, he slowed to a crawl, i pulled out to pass him and did 65 up the hill. He had a flatbed, i had a 13’6” box. Of course i’d much rather have a DD8, but still i’d take the Detroit over the Cummins. My only gripe, which now we use them for regional P&D, tri state area, not local, is an engine brake. The 8 has it, I suppose the 5 is too small, but at 13 tons, the brakes take a beating. I’m just not happy with the ISB, not saying they suck, but i just don’t like them. The ISB seems underpowered, strangly enough, the far smaller detroit, does not.

@@jaysmith1408 I think the 6.7 Cummins trucks are tuned to upshift sooner for better efficiency, which is why they feel slower. Even uphill with your foot on the floor, they upshift too soon and it bogs. This DD5 revs higher and holds gears longer.
Which is why I hate non-selectable automatics, they hold these engines back.

@@AdmiralRustyShackleford at least our ISB’s have a hunting problem with the transmissions. Drops 10mph for every shift, then revs to redline, then shifts again, down 10 more, and back and forth, and back and forth.

I'm wondering on the longevity, currently running a 2004 international with a 466 how does this engine compare. I have 900000 km on this engine, will the DD5 do the same ?

Will the DD5 have an exhaust brake through the turbo?

Hey Adam, the coffee mug was swag from the 2014 NTEA Work Truck Show. (May have been 2015, can't recall which year.) They have a cool new catch phrase mug every year. Thanks for watching!

Fleet Equipment thanks my wife made me one :) great videos. Would like to test the DD5, as a small school bus contractor I'm always interested in new technology. Any POCs you can provide? Daimler said to contact the dealer and the dealer had no clue.... I'm ordering two Thomas C2's next year and wanted to drive the DD5 before that acquisition. Appreciate any insight.

Not that I know of. FE doesn't deal too much with the bus side and I'm not sure if the DD5 will be available in Thomas buses. Dealers will likely be your best bet. Check with an Elite Support dealer, one of them will likely know more than your typical dealer: www.elitesupportnetwork.com/

Fleet Equipment my dealer confirmed that the DD5 will be available in the Thomas C2. Based on your experience, how do you think this engine will perform compared with the Cummins ISB? How was the acceleration, throttle response, etc.? Thanks for your inputs.
