Mega Drive Music Deconstruction - Streets of Rage 2: Go Straight

- Here I've stripped out the the various channels that make up the iconic Streets of Rage 2 track Go Straight and showed them off and how they layer up!
The Mega Drive/Genesis had two chips that it had access to in order to create it's music. The main chip was the Yamaha YM2612 FM Synthesiser which had 6 synth channels and 1 digital audio channel (DAC). This was backed up by the Texas Instruments SN76489 which had been the power behind the Sega Master System's music, this had 1 noise channel and 3 tone channels.
NOONE killed the Sega Genesis sound engine like Yuzo Koshiro. Got damn, just the vid playing isolated tracks from the full piece got me like ready to bust a move
Check out his work on the super nintendo game "super adventure island"
Dunno if is Koshiro or not, but about MegaDrive, tell me about the Soundtrack of the game: RISTAR
Cause he was smart and used both the sound chips for the Genesis/MD AND the Master System (both in the console for backwards compatibility I assume) to get the various sounds and channels he needed.
SEGA should have bought this engine and shared it with developers vs the crappy GEMS.
Thank u
ugh i want more of these
This hits many leves.
Is didatic for: Composition / Mixing.
At the same time it is itself a very good "mixer-dj-track version" of its own! Love it! ^^
I like how FM channel 4 is 2 notes in 1 channel, showing off a good use of the 4 operators. I also love how the SN76489 is used here in this song. If only FM channel 3 was used in extended mode for more polyphony...
I would rave to this all night on repeat no problem
Definitely needs to be more of this stuff! GREAT WORK!!!
Amazing work! As a n00b what would you say is the best way for me to get these individual sound myself? And from other SEGA Megadrive games such as SOR1?
Pretty sure he's just disabling emulator sound channels here
This is a great series i think doing a few tracks from a single game would be a big upgrade. I have a request a deconstruction on the first stage of jewel master.
Now do Streets of Rage 3's Fuze. It's been almost three years now! It's about time.
Does anyone else here the danny phantom theme at 00:59? XD
What program you used to deconstruct genesis music?
I wonder the same, have you discovered something?
@@franciscofores2657 Maybe he used RYMCast or some vgm player that can seperate the tracks.
the sound channels can be disabled one by one in an emulator I'm pretty sure
Hey, my man. Do you mind if I ask what program you used to separate the channels? Back in the day I'd do Gen+ .wav dumps, but it would bundle up multiple chips on the YM2612, which didn't allow me to separate them. Nowadays I'm back to writing by ear, but it's nice to break these original tracks down to get the right feel! Any help is appreciated :)
Sure, sorry for the late reply! I used winamp with in_vgm plugin available here: www.smspower.org/maxim/Winamp/InVgm then I set it to write to disk as a wav, turned off and on channels as required! It's a little fiddly clicking settings back and forth but works really well.
AugmentedVisionVideo Thanks for the assist, my friend! :)
MaestroDraven No problem! I like to spread the joy.
AugmentedVisionVideo I tried your method, and I also tried out Foobar2000 with a VGM seperator, in case you're interested in an alternative! Come check out my channel, BTW. More SOR covers going up, soon!
Great video! Can you do this with other consoles?
man... all the good memories! the best video game soundtrack of my time : ) if you plan on doing more, please include stage 8 SOR mega mix and stage 4 slow moon. the other incredible track by YK is from shinobi is called china town. will you show us how do it too? thanks
Flagged for bassline pornography!
Sounds like this is unfiltered. Still VERY trebly even though my speakers have full crossovers with attenuation resistors on the tweeters
Wow thx for this vidéo
Hey I saw your videos from OCRemixes Forum but since I don't have an account there I'll comment here. Interesting work, maybe you could improve it by:
* Adding a little piano roll monitor when playing each individual track;
* Playing group of tracks that represents the melodic line, drums or the bass line before playing all tracks again;
* Comment some curiosities about the track if you know any.
Looking for more of these series :)
Hey thanks for the feedback! I was thinking about adding a little more commentary and thinking about how to show it off best, I'll have a look at all these possibilities!
AugmentedVisionVideo yeah, it'd help presentation wise if you put yourself more in the mindset of a club dj or turntablist. Love what you're doing. Keep up the dope work.
Could you maybe upload this somewhere as stems?
It was a shame not many knew how to make the MG/Genesis sound like this.
link please
MORE BRO MORE!! :D
MD Channel 3 sounds emulated :/
Lunitaproductions it is, because with real hardware you can't play the individual channels. or maybe there's a very complex mod you can do to the console to do that that no-one's really done yet...
