      Indeed, I agree. I actually returned the Baader Filter to the supplier who lent it to me. I longed to keep it, but the cost : benefit ratio for my imaging system just did not seem favorable enough. The SVBony filter was simply good enough. Part2 is worth the watch, too (for additional info). Clear skies!

    Thank you for the test. Very well done. In my experience using higher end apo optics, the primary benefit of using a UV/IR cut filter is the reduction of haloes in modified mirrorless cameras like the Canon Ra whose internal filter in front of the sensor transmits some level of IR, which creates star haloes from internal reflections from its sensor filter.       Thanks Alan. I never used a modified mirrorless or DSLR camera. I see halos with my Optolong L-Extreme on very bright stars, but seldom otherwise. Thanks for your support of Astrophotography Japan! Clear skies!

    Hello Paul. I found this video very interesting. It is very striking to me that the equipment without a filter showed more contrasting images with respect to the background of the sky. The images were somewhat thicker than those captured with filtering, but the difference was not overwhelming. In fact, in the photo without a filter you can capture more depth of stellar magnitude. Obviously, this due to the capture of photons in UV and IR. I also did not see the classic IR halos of the photos without a blocking filter. This test really speaks highly of the quality of SVBony, even though it is a new and relatively inexpensive brand. To complement your study, we should look at the effect on chromaticism, comparing the filtered and unfiltered shots. You inspired me to do my own test with my 533MC and my SCT. A hug and thanks for sharing your experiences.🙂

      Thank you Jesus. I am glad you found it interesting and worthwhile. As for the contrast in the images, I did not adjust any settings; it was selected by the ASIAIR and it may not be the same for the filtered and no filter images. But you are correct...... if your intention is to really focus on the stars, then NOT using a UV/IR filter is the right choice. In fact, when I do ultra-wide-field imaging, I prefer to have the stars enhanced a bit and hence I purposely do not use these cut filters. I would definitely be interested in seeing your study on chromaticism, since I know almost nothing about that topic. Thanks for the comments and watching Astrophotography Japan!

    Thanks for comparison, helping me choose an uv/ir filter with the exact same camera and filter drawer :) One clue regarding backfocus : with such a small sensor the backfocus issues might be there but just outside the the sensor area as it will have more and more impact closer you get yo the edge. Perhaps with a aps-c size sensor it will be noticeable.

    Now I am confused. I understand regular cameras have glasses which blocks UV/IR placed in front of their sensors and modifying them means replacing such glasses with UV/IR pass through ones. If UV/IR cut filters helps for smaller star shape, why do we modify cameras. Appreciate if you explain a bit further. Thanks.

      If you are referring to DSLR or Mirrorless consumer cameras, then you are right. They have filter that block wavelengths of light that are not visible to the human eye, including infrared. That is why these sensors need to be modified for better H-alpha imaging. Consumer cameras are "tuned" to mimic the human eye in detection of light so that the photos they take are essentially similar to our human visual experience. Astro-dedicated cameras generally do not have any filters in front of the sensors. Such is the case with the ASI533MC cameras. Most astro-dedicated cameras are like this; they have transparent glass for protection only. But it is best to check the specifications with the manufacturer to be sure.

    Why did you use this filter against narrow 2-band? Is there a benefit comparing to them?

      Narrow band imaging versus UV.IR cut filters are very different and used for different targets. Personally, I do not think a comparison is particularly useful. It is easy to anticipate the results.
