Yes, This is called a Jack and Jill Competition. There are a couple ways that it develops but the lady and the man are determined by a hat draw. Then they are paired up and assigned a piece of music. The contestants often have met but are not regular partners. Amazing that dances like this get invented as they walk out on the floor.
Improv, yes. Here the champions are dancing with the winners of the different competitive divisions below their level, couples chosen randomly. This follow placed first in the intermediate division.

Yes, there are several styles of Swing. Probably most prevalent is Lindy Hop, East coast, and West coast. Also common is ones like Jive, Boogie Woogie, Jitterbug, and many others. Lots of discussion among dancers but East coast is sometimes thought to be too structured and West coast is arguably the newest and most evolutionary style. Often West coast is seen at competitions like this as they have more freedom to invent.

Depends on how fast you can make it through novice :P to win int at budafest though means you're more than ready for advanced... some will never get there, those who do generally take several years if they have good potential. Depends on your dance background, talent, how hard you work, how often you compete....
@@ArisDeMarcoWCS Well, I don't know the name of my teacher. He didn't give it to us. But it's a middle-aged balding grey-haired fellow. He seems alright for the beginner group. He was wearing a t-shirt from some polish WSC festival or meet-up. We learnt sugar push and I was so excited, to finally start understanding the mechanics and dynamics behind the moves I've seen on YT. Can't wait for my next class! The best thing was that we had some more experienced followers in our group (because during summer vacation time they couldn't gather enough people for non-beginner classes) and it was so nice and the atmosphere was great. People in the WSC community seem really great and friendly. That's so cool :)
