HIKING TO HUNT LAKE | NORTH IDAHO SELKIRK MOUNTAINS | KANIKSU NATIONAL FOREST

- Hey guys! It’s June 25th, 2021 and today we took a day hike to a beautiful high mountain lake in the Selkirk Mountains of North Idaho known as Hunt Lake. This is a fantastic day hiking or backpacking option, and is definitely a recommendation to be added to your list.
Hunt Lake is nestled high into the Selkirks just east of Priest Lake. The trailhead can be difficult to find, and a high clearance, 4WD vehicle is definitely recommended. I attempted this day hike about two years ago, and got lost driving the backroads and ended up bagging the attempt. We even got lost trying to find the trailhead this day, but thankfully we were able to find our way. My best recommendation is before you leave, be sure to know the exact route needed to find the trailhead. Download your maps, have a paper map, and be ready for some rough roads. I do not recommend following the AllTrails directions as they have led me astray for this one. Here’s a link I found on the internet with some driving directions to find the trailhead: trailsnw.com/t...
Once you take off on the trail to Hunt Lake, you’ll begin with a short section of “normal” trail that leads you straight to a large boulder field. From here, you’ll notice some cairns (rock stacks) and some spray painted arrows on rocks that will lead you along the trail. We followed these on our way up for the first 1/4 of a mile or so, but we realized that there is an actual trail below the boulder field that will lead you to Hunt Lake just the same! Now, if you take this lower trail I’m not saying there won’t be any boulder hopping because there will be. The trail will be difficult to navigate at times, but you’ll find it. The trail leading to Hunt Lake is short, and in less than a mile total you’ll be at the lake. Once you walk into Hunt Lake, you’ll be amazed by the views of the surrounding mountains and peaks.
In total we hiked 1.92 miles with a total moving time of 2:01:12 and an ascent of 568 vertical feet. This is definitely a lake you need to check out.

Thank you everyone so much for watching the videos! See you next time!
What a beautiful place! Thanks for sharing 🙂
Thanks so much! Hope you guys are getting some awesome trips in this summer :)
Wow, there were some gnarly boulder fields on the way. Did I see a little blood on the shin? Those rocks are sharp, and unstable. But what a place to hike to! Hunt lake looks gorgeous, and those Selkirks, wow. Great stuff!
Gnarly boulders is right, I'm just really glad we were able to find a trail for most of the way back! Aha and yes you did see a little blood on the knee/shin - I'm actually not sure how it happened but if I was a betting man I'd say the rocks played a part in it. Thanks for checking out the video! If you guys ever come down this way you should check out the Selkirks!
Great videos. Keep them coming...great shots.
Thanks so much! I believe I got a new subscriber around the time you commented (it doesn’t always tell me), and if that was you, thanks again. Big video coming this evening or tomorrow morning. Cheers!

wow! Love Idaho, that Hunt Lake is so beautiful and stunning! i'v been to Sawtooth Idaho once and i'd love to go back, explore more! new to your channel and look forward to following your adventures, you've got a new friend! hope to see you around! Cheers!
Hey thanks so much for the comment, Becca! The Sawtooth’s are gorgeous, and I’m actually headed down that way in a couple of days! Just hoping the smoke won’t be too bad. Thank you so much for the sub, and I’m excited to check out your channel and do the same thing. Cheers!
You are not wearing masks in the middle of the pandemic. I was hiking at the same time around Upper Priest Lake when I passed a group that I expected were from Spokane. I told them they needed to wear masks on the trail...like they do in California. One woman said, " Oh, no, this is Idaho."
Missed you up there by one day! Was up the 24th and did the route up and over to Hunt Peak and Fault Lake. I’ll be posting a video later next week sometime if you’re interested.
Oh man good timing! I wish we would’ve had time to do everything you did, so I’ll definitely check back for your video and sub your channel. Thanks for checking ours out!
Looks like a killer trip! We need to hit the trail together sometime now that we are up in Washington now! Not that far of a drive now. haha
Thanks man! And yeah that’d be awesome - just let me know when you’d be free 👍🏼 what part of WA?
@@DannyJSchaefer we are in Buckley. It’s right up against mount rainier national park! Soooo stoked to be here. Have hit two trails since being here and it’s been so solid.
That looks like Colchuck lake looking at Asgard pass.....
It does kind of huh? Wish we would’ve had time to climb it. That lake on the other side of the ridge (Fault Lake) might be another solid choice when you head this way.
@@DannyJSchaefer i was thinking about that. It'll be in mid September, should be beautiful up there then.
Such a beautiful spot. Too bad you didn't have the time to spend the night
Yeah! It would've made for a beautiful little backpacking spot. Do you have any trips planned this summer?
@@DannyJSchaefer I really don't have anything planned. My nephew and I are hoping to get in a trip or two, but he has been so busy with work now that things have pretty much opened back up that he simply hasn't had any time.
How is Robinson doing
Sorry I’m not sure what you’re referring to?
Most campers and authorities speak of the “200 feet rule”. This means that your campsite should remain at least 200 feet away from a body of water. please don't encourage camping near water
