Thank you for this Matt! This was a long awaited decision within the Employment Law circles. Glad to learn that Uber drivers are categorised as workers, and are therefore entitled to annual paid leave, etc.
Just wondering. Does this mean that if an Uber driver worked for the company for more than 2 years, they would qualify as an employee, and subsequently get employee benefits?
Also, what implications does this decision have on other companies that operate Uber-like services in countries with a common law system like Uganda? Could the decision be enforced in such countries? Thank you!

Hi Kato, I am glad you enjoyed the video. You have to be categorised as an employee and, generally, have at least two years' continuous service to be able to bring a claim for unfair dismissal. For the distinction between work categories do watch this video on work status: ua-cam.com/video/k9HdxYO5M9M/v-deo.html The decision cannot be enforced in other jurisdictions and legal rights for drivers would depend on the laws in that particular jurisdiction.

Thank you Matt for sharing! Would this decision mean that there is a possibility for Uber to be vicariously liable in the future for any wrongful acts of their employees (Uber workers) provided that all the requirements are satisfied for a claim in vicarious liability?

Hi Chaleena, am pleased you enjoyed the video. The Uber drivers who brought the claim have been classified as workers, not employees. Do watch this video for more information on work status ua-cam.com/video/k9HdxYO5M9M/v-deo.html
