This is probably one of the best youtube channels for learning English, in my humble opinion. As a teacher, if a student asks for some extra material, I can feel completely safe in simply copying the link of one of your videos about the topic we're studying. Of course I always check before doing so, but it's just to confirm what I was expecting. You're great people and seem to be doing something you love, and I really appreciate we can have access to your videos here. I see some teachers with less than a half commitment and passion, and they get more subscribers, which makes me confused. Anyways, here's a messagem from a Brazilian teacher who is also passionate about teaching English and feels happy to get to meet you both (even though it's just in a computer screen). Take care and best regards! Abraços!
Hi Arthur, this is Vicki. Thank you so much for these kind words and we hope we can always live up to your vote of confidence. Hi Rajat. So glad you like it. Normally we'd say 'how do I look?' to talk about appearance, but if we're thinking of a temporary appearance, then yes. We can say 'How am I looking?'
Dear Vicky and Jay, thank you for such a useful video! My question is a bit off topic. I wonder if the expression "feel like doing something" can be used in the present continuous. I sometimes came across such cases, and they do not seem totally incorrect but they are infrequent.
Hi Yulia! What a great question! As I'm sure you know, feel is one of those verbs that can be stative or dynamic. If we're talking about our health or experiencing an emotion then it's dynamic. eg. How are you feeling today? But if we're talking about feel in the sense of thinking or believing then it's stative, so it's unlikely to be used in the continuous form. In the expression 'feel like doing something' it looks like it could be dynamic because the meaning is similar to experiencing an emotion, but actually it's more likely to be stative, and we see that feeling as a state of mind. So in short - you might see it in the continuous form, but it would be very unusual. Thanks for an interesting question.
My teacher sent the whole class this video I thought it was boring and lame but it turns out really funny and has good content :) I feel like subscribing this channel Should I?
Oh great question. Thanks for this Freedom Happy. The short answer is die is a verb and dead is an adjectives, but we'll see if we can do something on it.
Hallo Maths Corner. Nice to meet you. I'm afraid I'm not familiar with the term 'linking verbs'. I've done an internet search and it seems to be a term some websites use for stative verbs, but I'm not 100% certain. If I'm right, then stative verbs would be the common technical term. Stative verbs are just that - verbs that describe a state rather than an action or event. Sense verbs are a set of stative verbs. Other common stative verbs would be verbs like 'be' and 'have'. Does that help?
Simple English Videos I used to learn that linking verbs are a kind of verbs that are usually followed by an adjective rather than an adverb in order to modify the verb that it follows, for example: :I feel tired." or "Her face turned pale." "Feel" and "turn" are linking verbs in this case. Did I understand correctly? And what technical term in your video has the same meaning as "linking verbs"?
Hello there. Thanks for this video, I understood everything; however, I have struggles when it comes to find the differences between 'may' and 'can'. I know that May is used to allow and Can as an ability, but still I get confused. For example: Can we talk about what happened yesterday? or May we talk about what happened yesterday? I think in this case it can uses both, but I'm not completely sure When visiting the beach, you may find dolphins and turtles or.. When visiting the beach, you can find dolphins and turtles Would you mind if you answered me these questions about the examples of may and can?
Hi @Matias! There are a couple of things worth noticing about what Jay says when he is the surgeon. Firstly, he says "It looks very healthy" (not 'very healthily'). So he uses an adjective and not an adverb. And secondly he says 'It looks...' and not 'It's looking...' Because 'look' is a stative verb in that sentence, he uses a simple form. ' It would also be possible to say 'It's looking very healthy...' but it would have a different meaning. 'It's looking...' would imply that it's something temporary and you don't expect it to last. Oh and there's one more thing to notice about this too. He says 'It looks healthy' and not 'It looks like healthy'. '...looks like healthy' is wrong. The preposition 'like' is followed by a noun and not an adjective'. I'll make another video about that.'
I always hear people say, "He doesn't look too well," although well is typically an adverb. I guess in that context it's an adjective. What do you guys think, Simple English? 🤔

Can you ..... ? ( ability )
Do you look / listen ... ? ( effort )

I smell / taste food . I'm smelling / tasting chicken . ( dynamic )
