I've always bought the hard plastic top-and-front-loaders, which are airline approved and much higher quality than the soft fabric ones. I don't like zippers on cat carriers, either -- a cat's fur or whiskers can get caught in them.

Good points. I forgot to mention that we’ve had cats get claws stuck in the mesh a few times.
