  • Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (27 January 1756 - 5 December 1791) was one of the most influential, popular and prolific composers of the classical period. A child prodigy, from an early age he began composing over 600 works, including some of the most famous pieces of symphonic, chamber, operatic, and choral music.
Variations (9) on a minuet by Duport for piano in D major, K. 573. Potsdam, 29 April, 1789
    Ingrid Haebler, piano
    Description by Robert Cummings [-]
Pierre Duport's cello sonata, Op. 4/6, was quite popular in the late eighteenth century -- at least it was with Friedrich Wilhelm II, the King of Prussia, for whom Mozart may have written this set of variations on one of its themes. The theme, taken from the minuet of Duport's sonata, is unimpressive on its own, but Mozart manages to wring a charming set of variations from it.
The first two variations maintain the theme's lively mood, the second exhibiting much scale-like writing, the melody heard in cascades of running notes. The theme appears in muscular but playful chords in the next variation and with lively accompaniment. With the fourth variation, the mood relaxes just a bit, but the pacing remains fast, the manner playful -- and playful describes the mischievous fifth variant, as well. The sixth is dreamy in its slower tempo and mostly upper register writing. Things turn lively and playful again in the ensuing variant, but slower once more and also reflective in the eighth. The last variation is driven and full of brilliant colors and dazzling writing. This charming masterwork closes with a brief restatement of the minuet theme.

Mozart the genius took a simple melody and showed what can be done if you are Mozart. As for Ingrid Haebler's Mozart interpretations , they just can not be equalled, and I have believed this for nearly 60 years. There is that sweet clarity, the sensitive phrasing and a general wholesomeness in her playing whic gladdens my heart to this day. Many thanks for this wonderful post.

Poor Monsieur Duport never thought that he will gain immortality thanks to the variations on his own theme, written by somebody whom he despised.
Variation no. 6 is simply breathtaking - how Mozart arrived here from an original theme is a mystery.
    Many thanks of publishing!

at 29:41 - 32:02 there is a piece listed as "Minuetto".
COULD YOU KINDLY TELL ME WHO COMPOSED IT (and when)?

Paul Mauriat composed "Minuetto" in 1975 in the baroque style, this elegant melody became the personification of his musical credo. This I found on Paul Mauriat Festival page on Facebook.

Why did Bach write so many small preludes and fugues? Kinda think of it, why did Beethoven even write his piano concerto #1? That was a waste if you ask me. He should've just went straight to 4.
