The Entebbe Raid - Why Did They Take the Hostages to Uganda?
Вставка
- Опубліковано 23 січ 2025
- An airliner full of Israeli civilians is hijacked by Palestinian militants and flown to the Ugandan Entebbe Airport. Israeli Special Forces mobilise, and launch an outrageous mission 2000 miles away to rescue the hostages from under the noses of a foreign power. But why did the Palestinian hijackers go to, of all places, Uganda, and why were they permitted to hold their hostages there?

Besides being the uncrowned king of Scotland, Idi Amin's full title was: His Excellency, President for Life, Field Marshal Al Hadji Doctor Idi Amin Dada, VC, DSO, MC, CBE, Lord of All the Beasts of the Earth and Fishes of the Seas and Conqueror of the British Empire in Africa in General and Uganda in Particular.
Hail his Excellency!!!! Not!!!
Idi, Idi, Idi Amin, The Greatest Ruler The World Has Ever Seen!
Well, I’m the Supreme Leader of This Cosmos and All Cosmos’…er, Cosmi…um, Cosmoses….uh, All Dimensions, so he could call himself that all he wanted up unto the day he died but it didn’t mean anything.
Still shorter than the title of the mayor of Bangkok in thai.
Only a Zaporozhian Cossack can properly respond to such titles.
Really loving The Intel Report. It’s a great addition to The Operations Room-especially for those of us who are regular subs and want to soak up as much info as possible on the history related to these stories. Keep up the outstanding work!
Firmly agree!
Fun fact, Amin actually attempted to invade Tanzania, which he got counter-invaded and get deposed by the Tanzanian army. He went into exile and eventually died in Saudi Arabia.
LMAO!!!
Does anyone know why he did it?
Good riddance.
If a corporal could seized power and launched invasions that almost conquer Europe, a sergeant should did better.
@@gorilladisco9108Hitler didn't plan the invasion the generals did.
Just goes to show how one evil man can bring down a once prospering nation all in the name of power.
There is alot of that happening these days.
Almost as if a government that upholds and protects the natural rights of the people is necessary for prosperity.
That's what happens when you let people who still have stone age tribal groups control anyone outside their group.
Every time you get an insane/evil dictator in those parts of the world they're always held up by their tribal group. There is no national unity in those places, its just 1 group trying to take control to rule over another one. This is why Africa is always a mess, they got artificially merged together instead of in Europe and Asia where unity between people happened naturally over time.

Thanks, I was unaware of most of this information. You have a great pair of channels.
idi amin was exiled from Uganda. he ran to the middle east and died there. Up to date Uganda as a nation has refused to allow his body to be brought back, nor does it acknowledge him as one of their leaders.
Good for them.
You haven't met many Ugandans then
@@Eh-Mungu-Nguvu-Yetu-q8pwhat does that have to do with the statement..
@@Eh-Mungu-Nguvu-Yetu-q8p What is the popular consensus about him in Uganda?
These are brilliant, unbiased, factual videos.
Highly informative, as good intel should be. I was unaware of this bit of history regarding Israel & Uganda. Quite interesting to say the least.
The noses sticking their nose 👃 where it doesn't belong, yet again
Still wondering why they fler to Uganda? From my intel it was because all other countries they requested to land at refused them.
Thank you for putting this together. So many people don't understand the complicated political situations that these events took place in. This really sheds light on the events at Entebbe.
I enjoyed the video but I was really hoping there would be more after the airport raid. What was the fallout between the two governments? How did other countries in the area react?
Edit: fixed a typo
Right. I'm fully invested now. Time to look up the inevitable end of Idi Amin.
Basically, there was a lot of international diplomatic fallout: most Western countries either outright praised the Israeli raid or at least did not condemn it, while a number of other countries such as Benin, Libya, and Tanzania, did condemn it (along with Uganda itself). An Israeli-owned hotel in Kenya (which helped the Israelis in the operation) was later bombed, it is believed by pro-Palestinian sympathizers in retaliation. Idi Amin also ordered the killing of hundreds of Kenyans living in Uganda, resulting in 245 dead and thousands fleeing as refugees. Idi Amin would be ousted from power three years later in 1979 and lived in exile until his death in 2003 in Saudi Arabia.
Agreed. Some notable events (simplified) from wikipedia:
One hostage, an older woman named Dora Bloch, was not rescued, as she had been transferred to a Ugandan hospital (apparently after having choked on a chicken bone). She was murdered on Amin's orders, along with hospital staff who attempted to intervene on her behalf. She was a dual Israeli-British citizen, leading to Britain cutting diplomatic ties with Uganda.
In response to Kenya's intelligence support for the operation, Amin also ordered the killing and persecution of Kenyans in Uganda, with 245 reported killed and thousands fleeing as refugees.
Matters were brought up before the UN, but nothing of much note seems to have come out of it.
Amin grew increasingly unpopular due to the above, as well as due to other ethnic and political persecutions and general geopolitical asshattery. After attempting to annex a portion of Tanzania amid efforts to hold on to his reign, he was deposed by the Tanzanian army and he was exiled to Saudi Arabia, who only allowed him to stay on condition he stay out of Ugandan politics, keep his mouth shut, and live a quiet life. He ultimately fell ill, was denied a return to his homeland - which had since normalized international relations - and died in 2003 at age 78.
In 2012, a joint Ugandan and Israeli memorial of the raid took place at Entebbe Airport, where both countries expressed their commitment to fight terrorism and "work towards humanity."
@@iguanamoat Matters were brought up before the UN, but nothing of much note seems to have come out of it......This bulletin just in......😒
Not without good reason do Israelis call it The United Nothing....
To add to this, it seems to me quite negligent not to mention in either video that 245 Kenyans were killed by Uganda in retaliation for Kenya's support to Israel in the rescue operation.
This video was a nice look into what Uganda was like at this time. Nice video.
As Paul Harvey would say "and now u know the rest of the story."
Thank u for explaining the lead-up to
The Entebbe Raid......very thoroughly presented.
I learned so much. Thank you very much !
Didnt really have any context for the raid before.
Great vid! Thanks
I love that the Operation Room and Intel report tire together. Would have loved more on the airpot from an intel perceptive.
Everytime I watch one of these videos, it makes me think about how (in theory) the best hostage-takers would probably be these guys coz they know all about that stuff

I’ve lived in Kampala for a while now and it’s interesting to see how close relations are with Israel and Uganda. The Counter Terrorism wing of the police was trained by Israeli commandos. Know a guy who was in the first cadre of training

Interesting to know.
Nice love the video
As a child growing up in Uganda in the late 1960's, often we would see or hear the drone of the Uganda Airforce DC 3's as they flew in and out of Jinja airfield. Untill this video, I always assumed they were from the surplus of WW2 airplanes in the US and from whom Uganda aquired them. Surprised that they were from Israel.
Incredible and intriguing!
Entebbe always makes me think that it should be a small town on the German-Dutch border.
Why?
There is a dutch town called Enschede
its also my favorite israeli restaraunt.
its in Or Yehuda.
A great shame the Israelis weren't able to capture him and put him on trial as they did Eichmann, I believe they also eliminated all the Munich terrorists.
They didn't aim for him that's why, they rescued their hostages held in Uganda and that was the goal
Very informative.
Watch the chest medals of Iddi Amin. The top parachute wings which he proudly wore are IDF (Israeli) paratrooper wings.
Iddi Amin was insane and a cannibal that ate some of his enemies.
Man need protein. Man eat flesh.
He would also pick two random people and order them to have sex while he watched. Truly sick individual
These are absolute lies!!
There is no evidence of this crap.
As a Ugandan this is typically rubbish
excellent as always
They Filmed on of the Movies about this at the Airport in Stockton, Ca. If you watch carefully you can see the California ANG hanger clear marked as that.
The currently prime - minister from Israel Nethannaru lost his brother at this mission - was shot dead trying to save the hostages in the airport
I'm here from the video on the other channel, the cross marketing is working.
I really enjoy your other channel.
But, I have a feeling, I will grow to appreciate this channel, even more.

There’s a great description of the raid in Admiral McRaven’s Book called “Spec Ops”.
I don't know why, but I get the feeling Uganda tell us why.
Ha😂
That somehow sounds like Idi Amin held a grudge
Sounds like he's just an average anti-semite.

I'm interested, where you take from the historical footages for your videos?
Current Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu's brother Yonatan "Yoni" was commander of the raid and was killed in the action
To bad they didn’t get him too!
To put it lightly, Idi amin could have legitimately worked for cadbury's in the fruit and nuts production line.
Lol. Probably would have eaten all the nuts and when the nuts were no more, he went nuts.
They should have made a pit stop on the way home to get Idi Amin
You couldn't fit that ego in a Hercules.

Side notes on the Uganda scheme: it's an erroneous name, since the land fot the Jewish state wasn't within Uganda, but was near the Uganda railway, which crossed into Tanganyka.
Second, it was a deeply unpopular scheme, and basically only Herzl supported it, causing him to later be ejected from the movement he helped organize.
My condolences to such souls... Amen

well I new none of that till now thanks
Thank you for the detailed background reporting. The title clearly states that this isn’t specifically about the Entebbe Raid but the reasons behind “Why”. Factoring for Amin’s treatment of the large Indian population within Uganda, it is hardly shocking that he used the favourite of all favourite scapegoats - antisemitism and anti Zionism - when “all else basically started to fail”.
You didn't mention Kenya's Govt role in the operation..
There wasn't any. The Kenyan government in a last minute humanitarian decision allowed the Hercules to land in Nairobi. And their hand was effectively forced.

The only Israeli soldier that died while liberating the hostages at Entebbe airport was their commander, Yonatan Netanyahu, brother of the current prime minister of Israel.
What happend afterwards?
Answer: because they knew the way, my brother
in 7:12 you can see Amin's IDF paratrooper badge that he got as a present from Israel.
Right! And he wore it long after deciding the Israelis weren't his playmates anymore.
His wife lived in the east end of London.

That would be cool if Israel was making a secret army in Uganda, that's like the French Japanese alliance against the Russian Mongolian hordes

Last King of Scotland is a great movie.

Didn't Tanzania kick amin butt so hard he got exiled later?
Yep they did
The film the king of Scotland was based on amin portrayed by Forrest Whitaker
The notion of expelling Indians from Uganda was a facade, concealing the hidden alliance between Amin and the Jewish community. 😏🤔 guess am speculative
Poor Idi Amin. He really was a dummy.
And dummies are those supporting him
It was an interesting day at the Ugandan National Fair at the Lake Victoria fairgrounds. The snake man asked to go the hospital, and was asked whether he needed a veterinarian, No, it was the solvents for the mirrors. Then President Dada was taken ill after eating too much sushi. Reassured there would be a doctor at the hospital, he asked for a veterinarian. Ambulance is tiring work, but, it was understood the snake man needed a doctor and the president of the country needed a veterinarian. The ambulance station at Queen Elizabeth National Park was awakened to the news of an in-flight emergency headed to Uganda, but in the darkness, a security officer expressed great relief that Israel was on the way, and they were going to handle the whole thing.
The plane was supposed to refuel at Entebbe, but Ugandan security officers, hiding in a disguised armored car, spilled fuel; and after it caught fire, the pilot was forced to move the plane and could the plane could not be refueled.
great history

The North was glad to be rid of them.
The similarities between Idi Amin and Saloth Sar is eerily disturbing of how they ran their respective countries
They were different.
Saloth Sar was blinded by ideology and he attempted to cleanse his country from enemy of his ideology.
Idi Amin was considering his country as his birthright and he could did anything he wanted with it.
So Uganda pretty much ducked themselves and are now a poor nation!
Another typical African love story
My grandpa met Idi Amin twice.
I'd love to hear more about the interactions.
I hope he washed soon after.

Uganda is where the Jewish homeland is supposed to be before they decided on Palestine.
Idi Amin taunted the late British Queen and her husband Philip by suggesting that she should spend time with him if she wanted to experience a real man!
Hilarious 😂
Probably the only true thing he said.
It says Amin was concerned the Israelis were going to take over the country but this proved to be false, but in the epp on the raid, it was stated "...1000 men to seize the country or 200 to take the airport.." Begs the question, was there a contingency plan? and how did he find out about it?
Idi Amin's concerns were unrelated and came a few years prior.
Riiiight
Idi Amin seem like a baby, can't get a toys from your mom? Ask his divorced dad the next day.
Amin will order the invasion Tanzania a few years later but Tanzania were able to pushback and depose him. He got help from Libya and Palestine who sends soldiers to Uganda to fight for him. He died in Saudi Arabia after getting deposed.
Obviously It's because it's too far from Israel for their military to be able to mount a rescue duh!
