Smile on Dad's face was priceless. Does a person good to see family working so well together. Just totally awesome and sure brings back old memories. thank you
A lot of times, people use the clutch as a break. That's a pet peve of mine. Due to the fact that there are breaks on the tractor. Lol. Im 55, and I've been around 2 cyclinders all my life. I still have 2 b john deeres that i use as chores tractors.
Yeah my Dad always told me don't use that pulley wheel brake use the tractor brakes....I love the Two-Cylinders I wish they would have made them alittle longer I wish they would have made some smaller diesel's like a 60 and 620 diesel
when i was young my uncle had a 1 cylinder STEYR tractor 15 horse you could for hear it miles away at night when he ploughed with it . We called it 1pot awesome sound from it .your 2cylinder brought back good memories when it fired up sounds awesome to
A friend of mine has a 720, I have helped him do the clutch, a replacement flywheel and we serviced the pony engine drive assy. It needed a new bushing at the drive end and new seals. How fun! It was a new experience for both of us, lots of book looking.
I remember taking my gramps to an estate auction. The guy was a biiig JD collector and with them all lined up for the auction it covered at least 15 acres and all but 2 ran. Before it started they all running and then right before bidding started on each tractor they restarted for a moment. I was sitting on a 830 front tire and they warned me they were starting and i then got off because once running it was gonna bounce me off. I love those diesel
Boy it's sure running nice. There is a couple things people may not know. The drive disk has a timing mark and there is a bearing inside the pulley that I'll repack especially if it was a neglected tractor. Nice work, the pony is running great and no smoke. Can't wait to see more.
Thanks for this clutch video. Very interesting for sure. Dad looked tickled to be up starting it. I know what he will be using a little in the fields this year!
A farm near where I grew up had a 70 on of the nicest tractors I ever drove. Compared to the many other colors of the tractors of the farmers around us.
Well done guys :) very impressed I am how all did and running perfectly nice with bit of bounce on front too ! Super excellent video too and glad all okay too now !
Do you have videos of the tear down by chance? I have to go do mine and I don’t have any tools at the storage place it’s at. I’d love to see what I’m in for before I head there. Thanks so much.
I'm not sure how many turns dad made actually basically you tighten the nuts till it take 40 to 80 pounds of pressure at the top of the clutch leaver to apply the clutch
How does the diesel fuel get metered to the engine? No Injection pump like other tractors?? I have several gas 2 cyl . But no diesels!! Just curious!!!
They have 2 push rod actuated injection pumps under a cover on top of the engine block John Deere used Bosch or Bendix brand injection pumps on the cylinders same with the 2 injectors
Where is your farm located? I'm about 1 hr. from New Paris tractor, South West Mi. Would like to talk to you about my 720 Diesel? Had problem last spring.
@@dirtgrainsteel While plowing with it in the spring, running great, it all of a sudden popped hard twice and locked-up, not sure what happened. Oil full, didn't get hot not pulling hard? Tried to roll it over later in the fall still tight. Great looking tractor all most everything works except the big motor now. Cranking engine works fine.
@@jefffirefighter12106 it sounds to me like you need to pull the pony off take the covers off and loosen the rod caps and see with the crank will move regardless shes probably going to need torn down it sounds like it's a bad deal its either a issue in the block or it's in the crank case....before you do anything pull the valve cover and see if it dropped a valve that could also cause a major problem
Really something unique about the sound of the 720/730 diesel...like a concerto :-)
Nice 720 keep her running another 60 years

That put a smile on my face to hear it start and run.
Good!

I'm going to have to check a Steyer out I dont think I've ever seen one!
@@dirtgrainsteel they are built in Austria they have been taken over by the big corporations Agco maybe . They are still known as Steyr
music to my ears.
Sounds good brings back old memories
Thank you!! Im glad it brought memories back!

Sounds real nice! Only thing missing is the front end bouncing but that's usually with a narrow front end 2 cylinder.
Thank you! It was bouncing alittle bit

Sounds great, I had a 730 diesel like that for many years
I want a 730 next!!
Very cool! Sounds great! Gotta be satisfying considering how far you guys had that thing torn down...
Just another day at D,G&S!
It was very satisfying!!
Sounds great now to see it out working in a field.
Thank you!

@Frank Deegan my uncle had a 70 and the neighbor had a 720. As a kid, I thought they were about the coolest things on the planet...
I love hearing these stories!!
Great team effort to get it running 👍
Yes it was!
Put a clutch in our model B last year. Easy peasy. The manual said to ‘run the bolt down tight’ .. lololo
Well done guys :) very impressed I am how all did and running perfectly nice with bit of bounce on front too ! Super excellent video too and glad all okay too now !

Love that sound!
That thing sounded good glad to see it back running
Thank you!
I would love a pony motor diesel!
Excellent video
Thank you
@@dirtgrainsteel your welcome
she reminds me of a unstyled, sitting there without any tinware. Kind of looks good that way.
Lol yeah but the tins got to go back on
@@dirtgrainsteel True. But with a real good high end paint job, I think she would be a real show stopper.
Awesome.
Yep!
That is awesome
Yeah I cant wait to take it out and plow
Sounds good

thanks for the clutch video-helps a lot. now how many turns did uns give the nuts to adjust the clutch?
I'm not sure how many turns dad made actually basically you tighten the nuts till it take 40 to 80 pounds of pressure at the top of the clutch leaver to apply the clutch
Never put a bolt together dry. Any kind of lube or antiseize will make bolts torque up smoother and tighter.
That it had some oil on it its plenty tight
Is this John deere's version of the formally md??
Have you had the top off the rockstar? I'm having trouble with mine and would like to see a video on it before I tear into mine.
Where are the wheel fenders? Had em on all the JD'S I had.
Them will be next I've got to find a good set might just get new ones
Leave the sheetmetal off- tell folks it's an unstyled 720!
Lol oh no dads got plans for the sheet metal its going to be beautiful when its finshed

Hi.. Does it have just the hand clutch, or foot clutch as well? Cheers
Hand clutch only....only the L,M,40,420,430 had foot clutches in the 2 cylinder family that I know of
@@dirtgrainsteel Thanks, not many 2 cylinder JD's, here in the UK...Cheers :)
