This really is an extraordinary piece of acting. Barrymore does the whole transformation with no cuts, no special effects, no makeup--he's just able to hold his body and face in such a different way that he looks like a completely different person. I mean yeah, they do a lap dissolve with his hands later, but that first shot is really amazing.
I believe Barrymore's performance is the reason Frederic March had to be buried under all that make-up. It was the only way to make audiences of the time "forget" Barrymore. Then, yen years later, when Tracy played the part, he went back to emulating Barrymore's decision and used less make up and allowed his acting skill to communicate the transformation. Still, Barrymore is the archetype for every screen actor who has followed in the role. That's the way I see it.
Well, Barrymore said himself ''the line between comedy and tragedy is thinner than a hair'' I wouldn't be surprised if Jim Carrey took inspiration from this.
He just tossed that drink down like he had lots of practice.Studied with the best,Errol Flynn, W.C.Fields.Those boys knew what a shot glass was used for.
The score is played by Gaylord Carter. He was the foremost silent film accompanist in the revivial period and one of the original players from the era. I think he arranged the score and used period music plus his own.

Barrymore is truly the greatest American actor of last century...no special effects, no makeup only facial expression ❤️
I love his initial reaction when he first drinks the potion
Every Halloween I watch Nosferatu this year this movie is making my list to watch.
The violin is awesome but
the acting and special effect is Oscar award win them all 😂
The Oscars did not exist until 1928.
I was sure I wouldn't get too much out of this just because it's such an early and silent version ... and this was actually super amazing.

Yeah it would be all CGI now that's why there is so little real talent left in modern film. Oh acting is there an app for that?
Enjoyable film, as is the 1931 Frederic March version.
1:35 he's turning into Jim Carrey.

Why does evil have to look evil. If that was the case we could catch evil and put it in jail.
In primis era l'attore, poi fu sostituito dagli effetti speciali.
