    I think I would still prefer the removable lid. Simply because of the many times I would still use it as a pressure cooker, slow cooker, rice cooker, etc. I wouldn't want the air crisper lid in my way for the times I didn't need to brown or air fry food. For example, If I just wanted to "boil" eggs, or make a soup, that big crisper lid would always be there. On the instant pot, I would only get the air crisper lid out when I needed it.

      I don't find that the crisper lid gets in the way, but I completely understand why you and others would want a detachable crisping lid. Personally, I don't like storing it. It takes up a lot of room.

      I thought that too, but I changed my mind. I’m not tall or particularly strong. I’m so glad now that all I have to do is flip it up. Is not in my way. And fussing about putting it on the trilateral...no thanks.

      Anybody who has ever used a rice cooker with an attached lid knows that the hinged lid does not really get in the way. In fact, if you are using up a lot of counter space when prepping and cooking a lot of things simultaneously for a big meal, then you may appreciate not having to find a spot to place a removable lid.

    I am a big subscriber of yours but I thought this was a very biased review. Obviously you are very well versed in the Ninja and do such a great job but the the IP could not have done flips in the sink and washed itself and gotten your approval. Good try but no cigar. I’m really sorry you feel that way, because that is never how I want to come across and I promise you I didn’t go into the review with any bias. In fact, I was hoping to like the Duo Crisp.
      I would never spend $150 on anything I wanted to dislike. I even started a Facebook group for helping people with their Duo Crisp, so it would have been much better for me if I loved the Duo Crisp as much as the Foodi.
      My recipes will work in both appliances, so I have nothing to gain by being biased one way or the other.
      I saw this as a good business opportunity to expand my reach, so, it would have been in my best interest to love the product and I’m sure many people in my shoes would have faked it.
      I’m not good at hiding my facial expressions, my excitement, or my disappointment. So, it is best for me to just be me. I couldn’t fake liking or disliking something if I tried.
      My goal of this video was to show both products, point out the differences and let people decide which appliance best fits them and their cooking style.
      We filmed the video within 2 hours of receiving the Duo Crisp, so, I promise you, except for testing the sous vide function and trying to use the rack with a few pans, I did not prepare or script anything. I’m never scripted and all of my videos are off the cuff.
      I never expected to be so disappointed. We literally had to stop filming once when the Duo Crisp slid on the counter. My husband checked the bottom to see if we were missing something, like rubber feet. We weren’t, they were there. It was shocking to say the least.
      It is my goal with every video to deliver accurate information in a completely honest way.
      The Duo Crisp just doesn’t measure up to the Foodi, in my opinion, but I developed that opinion as we were filming.

      I didn't take it that way at all, I'm glad you pointed it out because if you feel that way, others will, too. I honestly feel bad that I came across that way to anyone, I didn't mean to. I have to laugh about the Foodi can do no wrong comment LOL I have had my share of criticism for the design and especially the rack! Of course, once I saw the Duo Crisp rack, I now have a new respect for the Foodi rack. It's a better design, but still far from perfect. I also pulled out my 8 quart Instant Pot and it doesn't slide around like the Duo Crisp. I'm wondering if the IP people rushed this product out too soon, or made the base extra light because people complain about the Foodi being so heavy. I was one of those people that complained! LOL I also just read on Facebook that other people have had their Duo Crisp delivered dented as well. That tells me that there might be a problem with the design. The Foodi has had its share of issues, too! Many people have received faulty ones. I have been lucky and have 3 that work fine. I really feel like my review was fair, but I'm not one to sugar coat anything. If it's poor quality, I'm going to say it. I also know that if a product comes out that is as good, or better, I will say that, too. I am a very forthcoming and straightforward person.

      I guess all reviews are somewhat based on opinion and I'm sure there are many people who will love the design and functionality of the Duo Crisp and think I'm way off base. That's the beauty of having choices and I'm glad there are other options besides the Foodi. Competition is great for better product development.

    I've had a ninja foodi and it lasted 18 months before giving up with one fault that is very common and another that was outright dangerous. Ninja could not have been less interested. That was October 2020. I discovered the duo crisp in February 21 and thought it was worth a try. I have to say I prefer the separate lids which surprised me as I thought it might be a bit of a faff (messing around/inconvenient... not sure if you have the word faff in the USA ). I had the standard original foodi so the duo crisp is bigger. I'm so impressed with it that I've now bought the instant pot duo evo plus which is frankly amazing. I still have a ninja grill which I love and it still works perfectly but I would never get another foodi. I did see another review (sorry, I can't remember where) that stated that the foodi was an air fryer that pressure cooks whereas the DC was a pressure cooker that air fries. Having had both I would say that this is an accurate description. The foodi is an adequate pressure cooker, the DC is an adequate air frier and it really depends how you cook as to which one would suit you better. It does appear from this video that you have a preference for the foodi right from the beginning but I think perhaps this is partly down to frustration at not being able to do a proper comparison due to the DC arriving damaged. I am happy with my duo crisp and whilst I didn't really push the foodi to its limits I find myself wanting to do much more in the instant pot. I'm really not sure why this is. Since having the duo crisp I've discovered pot in pot cooking, something I really wasn't that worried about with the foodi. Both appliances are easy to use without constantly having to refer to an instruction manual. I think the non stick on the foodi basket is better and whilst it is a tight squeeze it will go into the duo crisp pot. I am really glad though that I kept the trivet from the foodi as it does fit nicely in my duo crisp and is currently being used for a roast chicken 🍗🐔 😁

    This is the first video I’ve seen of your’s, but could tell very early on that your choice in the end would be the Ninja product. You stated over and over that you know that machine, that you like that machine. And in order to give a fair review you should have either used two machines you didn’t know, or studied up and used the IP several times. I personally felt you were a bit over dramatic about the weight of the lid and how it slid around on the counter, almost like the commercials where they act like a deluge of Tupperware lids come out of the cabinet. I know you say you use an IP and like it, but this review was not fair and biased from the start. I’m in the market for an air fryer, but will be looking to other reviews that aren’t as slanted.

      You can certainly think whatever you want, but if you watched any of my other videos you would know that I'm as straightforward and honest as they come. I have many years experience with using Instant Pots. This was a comparison review between the Foodi and the Duo Crisp and that is what I did, compared them. I wasn't being dramatic about the weight of the lid or the sliding around, but again, you can think what you want. It doesn't matter to me one way or the other which product someone buys, but I do think people are entitled to hear the unbiased truth and that is what I delivered in this video. The Duo Crisp is not made as well as other IP's and it's functionality does not measure up to the Ninja Foodi. If you had experience (like I do) with both machines, this would be just as evident to you as it was to me. Best of luck to you in your search for an airfryer, I do hope you pick the best one for your needs.

I also bought a Stainless Steel pot in addition to the non stick. It's from Amazon, fits the 8 qt. FOODI, for $34, they also have a 6.5 qt for $29. I also got an extra ceramic/nonstick Ninja replacement inner pot and 3 lids because If I want to do a main course, a dessert on the same meal, I easily can switch pots, it makes it so much easier, plus, sometimes I want to put the spaghetti, or chili into the fridge ( it always tastes better the 2nd day) After cooled, I just put the Foodi glass lid on, pop it in the fridge to reheat the next day but With having extra inner pots, I can make bread or dessert or that wonderful ONEderful Breakfast casserole of yours without having to store my chili or spaghetti in a bowl, wash the pot etc. 😀

    Thanks Louise for this review! I bought an Instant Pot Duo Crisp on 1/5/2020. I have air crisped in it twice, once with catfish and once with hamburgers. I also Sous Vide Filet Mignons. After 2 times air crisping, the teflon coating on the air fry basket has begun to chip. I have only hand washed it, have only used silicon coated utensils and I have only used avocado oil in an EVO to spray the basket and the food. No Pam or any other aerosol oil sprays. The Sous Vide experience was also lack luster....it took 1 hour and 10 minutes to come to temperature and then it could only hold the temp at 122 degrees with the pressure lid on. So after 2 hours and 10 minutes, I ended up finishing them with a cast iron skillet. I registered my Duo Crisp with Instant Pot and opened a ticket regarding the chipping of the crisper basket on their website. After hitting submit, I received a confirmation on their website...."Thank you for filling out the form. Your response has been recorded...Due to high volume of contacts, we are experiencing delays in response times. We apologize for the inconvenience and will respond to your inquiry as soon as possible." I'm not hopeful that I will ever hear from them and there does not appear to be any way to even purchase a replacement air fryer basket, so I now have a very expensive 8 qt pressure cooker. I hope this helps others when making a decision between the two. I'll be getting the Ninja Foodi....or maybe the Ninja Foodi Grill...not sure which way to go. Any thoughts?

    I enjoyed your review. It was clear from the start you prefer the Ninja and I can see why. The lid when flipping is a valid point vs moving a hot lid. I recently got the Ip DuoCrisp for a steal at 129.00 on Amazon so that was a deciding factor along with the fact that I have an IP I like and there is familiarity. It also serves as a back up larger Pressure cooker for me as my IP is a 6 Quart. I have until the end of January to return, need be.
    My other reasons were I cannot store it on my counter. Being able to remove all lids and the liner, makes transport easy. BTW The lid locks into the underside of the heat trivet for storage. Supposedly line up and twist. It took me a few times to get it, not gonna lie!
    The SS liner is nice but that was not a deal breaker for me. I had no issue putting in the tray. I did not have to tilt it at all. It also does not move around like yours does. Placing lid on it does not even budge.
    I follow a plant based diet, so I have to experiment. I tried an Airfry squash recipe but since I did not PC, it was not as I would like and I did not slather it with butter either;=) I have to rethink some recipes that work perfectly in the oven for me and decide if it's all worth it!
    I started this journey wanting an AF and perhaps getting a standalone would have been a cheaper adventure for something I may not use much.
    I was really torn between it and the Ninja. I watched John Sanders channel a lot and now yours and I will visit a few others who use the Duo Crisp to see differences and maybe get some recipes that work for me!
    Clearly far too much thinking and pondering about a simple appliance, but that's me ;=) I'm grateful for all the folks who take the time to share their kitchens with us!

    I saw both of these units in Target, and the Duo Crisp was $100 cheaper, so naturally I was curious about how they compared. I feel like you provided a thorough review, and even mentioned a lot of points that may or may not matter to others. As you said, your role was to provide info distinct to each unit, and it's up to the consumer to decide what fits the budget and what's important.
    I like that you don't try to hide the fact that you love your Ninja Foodi and were absolutely considering the alternative with as little bias as possible. You like what you like - there's nothing wrong with that! I am biased towards Ninja products because I own a few of their things and feel like they just put out a stellar product. (I still "dream" of owning their coffee bar! haha) I was curious about the Duo Crisp, though, and how it compared. You answered that question, as least where it pertains to fries!! :D
    May I make a suggestion? If there is any way to add something about fries in your description, it may help your viewers. My husband last night said that the only thing he wanted to know was how well the fries turned out in either of these. I was curious about how a steak would turn out, but he wanted the fries. Go figure.
    Overall, I think your video is fantastic. I understand what you mean about the lid feeling too heavy because since you are not very tall, you mostly force the shoulder to do the work, and this can feel really awkward. Someone taller has a better vantage point to lift and move that 6lb lid and would use more of the biceps, which feels more comfortable. That point is important to me because I am not extremely tall (5'6"), but having the lid attached just saves space given I have a small kitchen area to work in.
    Thanks again for posting this!! :D This was great!

    Louise, your reviews are so practical and filled with good, honest common sense. I was dithering between the two pressure cookers/air fryers so I watched lots of comparison reviews but it was yours that decided me. Each time you hefted the top off the Instant Pot, the expression on your face told me all I need to know 🙂I'm going Ninja. Thank you

    Regarding the weight and movement, you should have demonstrated picking up the Ninja and the Instant Pot for storage and let us see how the struggle is between the two. Since you mentioned your height and that of the counter, I would think that the Instant Pot would be easier to pull to the edge and pick off the counter with a slide and 6 pounds less (in the lid). Also, the lid of the Ninja being vertical to use the pressure cooking feature limits the location for use. For example, I'd have to use the main area of the kitchen counter because my overhead cabinets are higher up. But I'd much prefer to use it on the counter next to the fridge but those cabinets are lower. This is a pretty important point. Also, it did show seconds but you were eating the fry from the Ninja. Finally, you did adjust the default settings of the Instant Pot for frying to that of the Ninja. So you took the Instant Pot out of specification for what the manufacturer suggests for the function. This is all on you because you, admittedly, have zero experience with the Instant Pot. You really aren't qualified to review it, IMHO. I would encourage you to use it, learn it, know it, then review it...as you have done with the Ninja. That would make a fair review. Now, I have to go look for another review(er) as I am no better off than when I started.

    • @TheSaltedPepper
      @TheSaltedPepper 4 роки тому +16

      I totally agree with you about picking it up. I didn't even think about that because I store mine on the counter. The Duo Crisp is definitely lighter to pick up and store. When you are pressure cooking, you really should have it out from underneath the cabinets, but I can see your point. It honestly didn't cross my mind because I always use any pressure cooker pulled out from underneath the cabinets. If you want to give me the measurement of your cabinet height next to your fridge, I'd be happy to take measurements for you. The one thing you should know is the IP Duo Crisp is actually taller than the Foodi with the crisping lids on. I'm pretty sure I mentioned that in the video. My cabinets are normal height and there is no way I can put the crisping lid on the Duo Crisp while it is under the counter. The next point you make is pretty silly though, I didn't take the IP out of any manufacturer suggestions. You can adjust the time and even the temps at any time during cooking. I have plenty of experience with Instant Pots, I've been using them a lot longer than the Foodi and I'm very qualified to review and compare the two. I've been creating recipes for this type of device for over a year. I'm probably one of the most qualified people to review and compare the Duo Crisp to the Ninja Foodi. I know what works and what doesn't work. While I agree with your first couple of points and apologize for not thinking about those things, I would love to know what you think a fair review is? It seems to me that you want someone to tell you what you want to hear and not necessarily the truth. I never said, nor do I think, the Duo Crisp is a bad product, but I do think they have room for improvement and I hope to see those improvements in the next release. I know a lot of people really wanted the detachable lid, but it is heavy and clunky and I know from experience when you are cooking multiple things at once (as these cookers are supposed to be designed to do), it's going to get in the way. I realize that you would not understand that because you haven't been cooking and developing recipes for this type of appliance for a solid year, but I really thought it was important to point out. I was excited about this product, there are people I know who haven't gotten a Foodi because they have been waiting for a design like this. Unfortunately, the Duo Crisp design and functionality is not up to the standards of the Ninja Foodi. The rack in the Duo Crisp slides all around the inside and it is not conducive to pot in pot cooking. It will be very limiting in what can be cooked together. If you want to pressure cook a chicken and then air fry it, the Duo Crisp is going to work just fine. But if you want to really get creative and cook all the components of your dinner at once or make multi layered cakes, you are going to have a hard time doing that with the rack that comes with the Duo Crisp. You can buy a different rack, but that is going to add to the expense. I know you don't know me, but I am one of the most honest people you could ever know and my only goal with my cooking channel and website is to help people gain confidence in cooking. It makes no difference to me what appliance they cook in. I just helped a lady yesterday with her Duo Crisp. I also have a Duo Crisp Facebook group and a Ninja Foodi Facebook group and I help people all day long. I get tons of emails and private messages asking for help, so I know first hand where people are having issues. Like I said before and I'll say it again, I am extremely qualified and only want people to be happy with their choice. I'm also a straight shooter and I don't fluff over anything, if that isn't what you call a fair review than I honestly don't know what to tell you. I hope you find the review you are looking for.

    No offense to the hostess, but the best applause are due to the camera crew for the closeups on the control panels. Work on par with QVC. I’m stunned the IP took all that time to heat the water for sous vide. I’ve done sous vide in my KitchenAid multi cooker, and it takes no time to get water to temp. Then it cuts back to maintain the temperature. This unit clearly has the power to heat water. This must be a bug in the program. It’s not my first choice method for cooking anything though. About the look, IP makes all their stuff look pretty much the same. Their signature. The ones who love them, love them. But that base not having any rubber feet is certainly an issue. I would turn it over to see if they fell off or got left off. With that dent, it makes you think someone already slid it off a countertop and took it back to the store. I wouldn’t want that on my counter without a silicone mat under it, at least. At the pinnacle I agree the lid is the worst. The hinged lid is just the way to go. I’m a grown man and wouldn’t want to be bothered with that when other choices are out. I’ve been waiting for a reviewer to finally call this out. When you have food on your counter you are trying to prepare, you don’t have space to have that top sitting around.

      My husband is the BEST cameraman and I am lucky to have him that is for sure! I will pass along your compliments for sure! To be fair about the sous vide function (and I wrote this up in my post, I just didn't realize it before I did the test and filmed the video) they say to put the pressure lid on during sous vide cooking and I left it off because I never use a lid with my stand alone sous vide cooker. With the lid on, it definitely would have gotten to 140 degrees and most like hotter than that. The lid is a pain for me, but I'm a messy cook and usually have so much going on that I never have enough room as it is. My island counter is huge, but I'm so short I can only reach so far. LOL

    page 42 of the users manual states that using the lid while doing Sous Vide cooking will get better temp control. This is because it will keep the heat in. Without a lid, it is like having your front door open while the furnace is on, your house will never reach the temp you desire.

    • @TheSaltedPepper
      @TheSaltedPepper 4 роки тому +1

      I did read that and so I retested the function and talked about it in my written post. With the lid closed it got several degrees hotter than I set it for. To be fair, a specialized tool will almost always be better than an all-in-one tool. Stand alone pressure cookers, slow cookers, and even sauté pans also perform better than both of the machines in this video. So it stands to reason it also requires some user tweaks in Sous Vide mode.

    Adding the hottest tap water you can in the beginning to the Instant Pot helps with the temp for the Sous Vide. Also, flipping the meat during the cooking pot a few times will help with the water not being circulated. That's what I've learned so far. One of the other differences I noticed was the heat output from the venting on the back of both machines. Using a temp thermometer, the instant pot duo crisp was cooler than the ninja was.

I already know I like the Ninja better just because the inner liner is wider. I love my IP 6 qrt, in fact I just used to it to make green curry chicken. But I use my Foodi almost everyday. There's also the mealthy air fryer top that can be used on the IP if anyone has an IP and wants to have 2 crisping features for a lot less than buying a whole new unit. I saw another demo and they said that the air crisp on the IP preheats before starting the crisping, true? (doesn't matter just wondering) Do you have the mealthy lid? Ok.... I've watched this video up to the point you mention the dent in your Instant Pot and I'm here to tell you, I have 2 IPs and the dent is purely cosmetic and has NO EFFECT on pressure cooking. The IP lid locks onto the permanent pressure cooker metal in which the the stainless steel pot sits in and the shiny wrap around is just a thin piece of metal that makes the IP look pretty. It has NO functional part other than keeping everything internal covered. You could have gone on the Instant Pot Community FB group page or even googled it, you would find plenty of answers regarding a dented outer shell and how people have even fixed it themselves. If you notice, if you press your finger hard enough on the outer shell it will give some, do you think that thin piece of metal would be able to bear the brunt of pressure cooking? Nope... Now , if the hard metal liner was dented as well, and just by looking in the internal guts of the pot you would spot a dent and the stainless steel pot probably would no longer inside fit due to the dent.

    • @TheSaltedPepper
      @TheSaltedPepper 4 роки тому +11

      I'm sure you are right, but I can't do a public video showing me pressure cooking in a dented pot. I just can't. Plus, the dent is so close to the bottom and the black area on the bottom is separated from the shell and the display is also separated too much. I have an 8 qt IP that is great and very sturdy. The metal around the Duo Crisp is much thinner than my 8 qt ultra from what I can tell. I honestly think they pushed this model out too fast or something. The design and feel is nothing like my IP Ultra which I have been very happy with for years.

    I bought the Goldlion Sear N Sizzle plate as well, and might get the Goldlion stainless steel pot since I prefer that.
    Thanks for so many informative and interesting vids...you're a natural teacher.

    I recommend you call Instant Pot support about the dent, their support has been excellent and I expect they will tell you its perfectly safe to use the pressure cooker since the the inner cooking compartment is much more robust enameled steel whereas the stainless steel outer shell is cosmetic only. I have 4 Instant Pots and their versatility is almost endless

    • @TheSaltedPepper
      @TheSaltedPepper 2 роки тому

      I'm sure it is, but it is irresponsible of me to pressure cook with it having a dent and not necessary because there is no question that the Instant Pots pressure cook just fine. We've been using them for years. The video was more about the differences in the crisping lids and the functions so people can make an informed decision. Thankfully, IP has fixed some of the issues that I brought up in the video with the release of their ProCrisp.

      I agree. That dent is cosmetic. The pressure cooking function should work. Instant brands has the best customer service. They have sent me new IPs for issues less than this.

    If you decide not to get a replacement Duo (but do not have to return the damaged one you have to Kohl’s) you could always fill the SS pot with mud and fertilizer, stick a plant in it, and turn it into an Insta Pot Planter! LOL
    But curious...will the air crisper basket from the Duo fit inside the Foodi? If so, at least you have an extra basket to air fry things in, using your Ninja Foodi. Because of the design of the rim of the two inner pots, I would guess that the SS pot from the INSTA will not fit and work inside the Ninja.
    Insta seemed like they had a good idea in theory, but overall, my money is still on the Foodi. As someone stated here in the comments, when you remove that AF lid off of the Insta, not only will it be hot, but no matter where you place it, it will take up more counter space (even though you may replace it right back on the unit seconds later, and continue cooking). So if you are already limited on your available countertop space, this could cause another issue. It’s a “Naaaaah!” vote for me. Think I’ll stick with my Ninja!

Ninja customer support was friendly and courteous but would only offer a replacement at a price that was $40 more than the price of a new Instant Pot Duo Crisp + Air Fryer. I tossed the Foodi and bought the IP. I was really happy with the Foodi before it broke . I have to move the unit before I use it and the IP is much easier to move around as it is a good bit lighter. I own the duo crisp and have no idea how you feel like the lid is too heavy or that it slides around the counter. Mine literally has never done that, and the lid is pretty light weight. This was obviously a biased review because you have using the ninja and are more knowledgeable about it.

    • @TheSaltedPepper
      @TheSaltedPepper 4 роки тому

      If you had back issues or severe arthritis, 6.5 pounds is heavy to lift on and off. It's not too heavy for me, but thought it was worth pointing out for the many, many, people that would definitely find it too heavy. I do the same thing when I talk about the base of the NF blender. It's simply to give people facts so that they can make up their own mind or at least go to the store and test the lid a few times. The sliding issue very well could be a default in my Duo Crisp because I have heard from several people that theirs doesn't slide. I can only report what I see and experience, but I can fully acknowledge that the grips on the base of mine might not be working as intended because it does slide around. Unfortunately, I did not have any feedback from others to go on when I created this video. I do have another 8 qt Instant Pot and it is much sturdier and a better quality in my opinion. I hope the next release is a higher quality for sure.

    In re: IP, as a friendly FYI, the rack in high position is used for steaming to keep the food away from the water (bottom) or if you need a double layer like a rack of ribs, you can fit half on the bottom and half on top. The round rack is placed upside down so you don't need to put it in sideways. It serves as a double layer as well when air frying.

    I think making sure the oil was evenly spread may affect how crispy the fries are didn't look like it would have been evenly spread. I have the newer version of the 8qt Foodie and am very happy. I have an IP Crisp being delivered tomorrow from Kohls. Definitely a big price difference which prompted my purchase $124 delivered after opening a Kohls card compared to the Foodie that cost $253 delivered from Amazon. Thought I would prefer the seperate air crisp lid but the Foodie design does seem better as does its look, build and weight as you have shown in the video. Thx for the in depth review!

      The price from Kohl's was incredible and I totally understand why people would jump on it. As far as the fries go, I did toss them after spritzing and my husband and I ate them for dinner, both batches and across the board the Ninja Fries were better. @@TheSaltedPepper At the moment I would not buy either for the same reason, the lid. It must come off and that's a must for me. The Instant pot design does come off but it is too awkward to use. I think both options need to improve in that regard. I find many of your issues exist because you have a set way already established in how you use the Ninja. Also comparing a product that you have never used to one you are very familiar with puts the Instant pot at a disadvantage from the beginning. The Ninja may very well be the better product but in it as current design it is not for me.

      I agree that different pots can cook differently, but some of the times on those cards are so off, they just aren't correct based on my experience with both Instant Pots (I've had one for years) and the Ninja Foodi.
