    Script:
    I have no self-esteem.
I’m not saying I dislike myself, or that I have a problem with my self-image. And I don’t have low self-esteem. I’m just saying that I have no self-esteem at all.
Why? For the same reason that I have no pet unicorns. Self-esteem is a fantasy. It’s a meaningless fabrication that exists only in your imagination.
The dictionary defines "esteem" this way: “To regard with admiration.” Self-esteem, therefore, means to regard yourself with admiration. But is that how we should see ourselves?
If someone asked you who you admire, would you really want to answer, “Well, I admire myself"? Would that be a good thing?
    I would say no... emphatically.
I was hardly a precocious kid, but I think I realized this “self-esteem” thing was a racket as far back as junior high. I remember when the guidance counselor at my school handed out a worksheet and asked us to “rate” our self-esteem on a scale of 1 to 10. Meanwhile, kids in China were learning silly things like “math” and “science.” Now we’re bankrupt and they own the country. But at least we all feel pretty good about ourselves.
In any case, there we were, facing the important task of arbitrarily quantifying our egos. When I asked my teacher why I should have high self-esteem, she said, “Because you’re special.” When I asked why I was special, she said, “Because you’re you!”
I found this an odd statement at the time, coming as it was from the woman who’d just given me a D on my last math quiz. Most of my classmates, though, quickly jotted down nines and tens. Incidentally, some of them would grow up to be unemployed alcoholics, but I’m guessing if they could take that test again, they’d score themselves exactly the same.
See, that's the whole point of self-esteem: to be proud of yourself even when there's no reason to be proud of yourself.
Of course, apologists will claim that self-esteem is simply about confidence, and that you need confidence to succeed in life. Okay. But if self-esteem is simply about confidence, then why don’t we just call it “confidence”?
    Because confidence must be earned.
A student is confident about doing well on a test if he studies for it. An athlete is confident on the field if he practices. A singer is confident in her abilities if she, in fact, has abilities.
Self-esteem, on the other hand, can be defined as “unearned confidence.” The person with “high self-esteem” (also known as a “narcissist”) feels good about himself on the basis of nothing. We may ask him: "Why do you esteem yourself?" And his learned response will be: "Because I'm me."
Like a modern day Narcissus, he can’t see the world outside the window because he’s too busy whispering sweet nothings to his reflection in the glass.

"if everyone's super then no one will be"

    • @nadvic1797
      @nadvic1797 5 років тому +8

That's actually a highly philosophical question though. If everyone is super, that indeed means that noone would be any better than the other. But doesn't that also mean that everyone is perfect that way? Not really perfect, but if you'd see it on a scale, everyone would be the best. Sadly, this would also include that everyone had to be just as super as the other, which would mean that everyone would need to come to the same accumulated worthyness everyone else also has. So if you still look at different aspects of life, you'd still get a high difference on a scale regarding only that aspect, which would make them less comparable again. So everyone would have to be exactly the same.
Btw, this is basically the quintessence if the video. You shouldn't come up with any other ideas, and only blindly follow the guidance of the guy in the video, who basically told you: self esteem is nothing else than working hard towards your goal and then reaching it. And if you live in any other way, you shouldn't have self esteem and should hate yourself.
And as i'd like to put it: that's total bs ...

Man let me tell you, you have NO IDEA how accurate this is in Norway. Teens these days are insanely self-centered and walk around with no accomplishments and dream all day about things they will do and get famous for... No really, teens here are "dreamwalkers" - which describes how they act and think, "self-esteem" does play a role into this issue, but it's not the sole cause of the problem.
... No idea about America though :/
    edit:
3 Years later I get reminded of my comment here, which is funny, because about 1-2 years after I posted this comment, I changed my mind.
I'll leave my bad take of a comment up, if anyone wishes to keep their replies to me.
But note that what I said originally isn't something I stand by anymore. Teenagers today aren't any different to how we were as teenagers back in the day.
They honestly have enough crap to deal with in their lives, only to then get unfairly stereotyped by *some* older people (who think they were better).

@@Iliadic I can somewhat agree, but even people with learning disabilities shouldn't be praised for no reason. You can always compliment someone's ability, we even congratulate small children that learn how to do something as simple as speak a first word, or walk, or go to the potty themselves. Even though those are such simple actions, it's the fact that they did something rather than just being congratulated for being alive and "special". It's ok as a parent for you to tell your kid that you like them because they are smart, funny, etc. but in an environment like school, where teachers have much less time to get to know each student, it doesn't fill any gaps to do something as superficial as telling a kid "you're special" or "you're so smart" when you can instead talk about the good work that they have done which will build up their confidence constructively. And I say constructively, because if you develop a skill, you have that tangible skill. If someone compliments you on something that isn't quite so stable, like personality, what will you think about yourself if you're bullied and you act differently from what people expect or experience trauma that affects your mental ability?

Self-esteem should be about telling youth that they are CAPABLE and that they can achieve anything that they WORK HARD in, and that they should be confident in their decisions in life, that they are not fundamentally worse than anyone else and have the ability to achieve. It should be about encouraging young people to pursue their goals. It is not, however, teaching kids to think they are "special" like the SJWs do, that just fosters narcissism.

Knowing is just information. It's how you implement it in your life and what you use it for that matters. Peolle live a simple life naturally have peace of mind. But for me, it was a long and hard work to reach peace of mind.

I remember being treated like this... I remember plenty of points in my school life where this had occurred and honestly it just weirded me out. I remember back in Elementary we had a pole casting contest, you know for fishing? With targets and all... and it came down to me and a girl who I knew in my own class. We both were doing the longest cast but also had to make sure we hit the targets right in the middle. I was given an easier time myself since I was and am autistic.
So I got to go up closer to the targets and of course I won. Which made me happy. After all I got a little medal and as a kid. Getting some sweet metal that looks nice is of course gonna make you excited. But then I saw that the girl next to me also scored. Pretty much just right behind me. Which was cool. But she also got a little medal. In fact. I saw the whole class get medals. It made me feel weird.
Looking back on it. I wish I didn’t have an easier time for one. Simply because I personally have autism. Especially since I don’t have it nearly as bad as others... and two the person rewarded should have been the girl. Maybe I could have gotten 2nd if we had the classic 1, 2, 3.... but of course we didn’t and if we did. We all would of course have also had “participation” rewards.
It’s fine and especially fun when schools and teachers give out positive reinforcement. But it’s just demeaning and stupid to reward things not deserving of it. It always made me feel weird and stupid. Especially STUPID! Nothing makes me feel more like I’m the dumbest person alive then when people go easy on me and treat me and others like that.
It feels like one of those classic Lab Rat tests. Go to the end of the maze and you get Cheese! Which funnily enough is even more better then how we are treated. At least the said Rat actually did something to earn it. Meanwhile we’re sitting here with this bs.

I mean, it's probably because that's not the idea self-esteem is made from. Since self-esteem is not a defined term, we have leeway with how it can be interpreted. He brings up how too high of confidence causes people to not feel as if they need to train to get better and that's true but that's why we don't consider self-esteem confidence. Self-esteem normally is talking about a state of mind that's more complicated than just a feeling. Normally when someone is considered to have low self-esteem, they don't have the will to try while people with high self-esteem are willing to try and fail and keep going until they see results. Self esteem is a mixture of emotions: confidence, resilience, and positive thoughts on ones self (or I guess what could be considered "self admiration"). Since Self-esteem does not have a text book definition, it can be interpreted differently. This is just my interpretation

I think the baby boom generation started this whole self esteem movement as a legitimate backlash against at least some actual, (and some perceived too,) abuse that they did experience growing up. I think a lot of older people felt like their lives turned out crappy (the ones whose lives did turn out crappy for whatever reason) because their parents and teachers were to hard on them, made them feel worthless, or didn't tell them they loved them enough, or something. Even if that may not be the real reason, they felt it was. So they vowed to not do that to their kids. The problem is, they took it to far in the opposite direction.

When life becomes easier it tends to breed softer/lazier people. Things have only gotten easier in the past 60 years and now you have a generation who doesn't want to do physical labor, or really work for anything because everything has been handed to them their entire lives. Even poor people nowadays have it easy compared to generations past. They get money for being poor, food etc. "Poor people are fat nowadays, think about that shit." Joe Rogan. I'm not here to argue about why someone is poor but I guarantee you live like a king being poor today compared to in the 30's and 40's. But i hated people complimenting me, hated people calling me cute. Its carried on till now a 15 year old who his parents kicked him out for bad behaiviour, failing school, no girlfriend, and all friends are stoners, junkies, vandilists etc. I hate myself, I always have. I think we need to be taught to be at least slightly confident, not by our school or anything but confidence is key in everything. Los self esteem holds you back much more than high self esteem trust me. When your insecure you feel you cant do anything right anyway so you never take the opertunity. Somebody with low self-esteem isn't going to strive to be better because they see themselves as a total failure incapable of improvement or success; it goes hand-in-hand with depression. If you have high self-esteem, you believe that you can be successful if you put in the HARD WORK and PRACTICE and that you are capable of growth. Self esteem is not the sort of baseless arrogance he is describing; it is literally defined as "confidence in one's own worth of abilities; self respect." Self esteem isn't about ego and thinking you deserve a prize for breathing. It is about respecting yourself, treating yourself with dignity, and having faith in the abilities you have.

    • @fastcarsaremylife

Yes, this is one of the worst videos I've seen from PragerU. The product of this sort of thinking, is shutting of a lot of your emotional life. That's not good, and does not lead to a happy life. It leads you perhaps to a stable, productive life, but you'll feel hollow. Some people, like the one speaking, perhaps think of that as an ultimate goal and and even smaller part of those people might even enjoy it, but for the general population, this is not a good idea.
Self-doubt is real, and self-esteem is indeed a good thing. Narcissism is of course not, but self-esteem does not equal narcissism. Narcissism is when you think your faultless. Having self-esteem does not mean you're faultless. You can think "hey, I'm doing pretty good [even just for breathing]" and still thinking "I want to improve this". It's about being able to receive criticism in a positive manner where it gives you positive energy to go on, instead of ignoring the input. "Hey, this guy said I should do better at this. Huh, that's true, I should."

In another words, you should earn it, deserve it, through your actions, and not because you esteem yourself but because you're confident in who you are because of what you do.

I feel like you’re describing an extreme case of self-esteem. When I think of self-esteem personally I think that it gives people confidence to be themselves. People being themselves could be someone who’s super nice and hardworking. I’ve never really seen people define self-esteem as acting narcissistic. There could be people who take it like that. That’s just my opinion of this.

I think this video is describing those people with "very high self-esteem". For me self-esteem is about how you "esteem" yourself or how you see yourself. If you have a low self-esteem you see yourself so poorly or in a negative way which can sometimes be not also true (like in cases of people with depression when they "see" themselves as totally helpless or not capable of doing something better when more often it is not true). On the other hand those with "high self-esteem" are the ones who see themselves as almost perfect & love themselves too much. Therefore we need to have just a healthy kind of self-esteem where you don't think of yourself too highly that you are beyond reproach, but at the same time don't think of yourself too lowly than who you truly are otherwise you might end up hating yourself, always depressed or even suicidal

Something I always thought! In school we do so many worksheets on our self confidence, but really, I think if we talked about humility- or even better nothing at all becuase it's not the schools job to raise kids- our country would grow in a very different and better-off direction.

I first watched this video before I knew who Matt Walsh is. Looking back at it now, I wanna say that he's yet another example of how men always look our best in our thirties and beyond, so long as we take care of ourselves. In our younger years, no matter how well-kept, muscular, well-postured, or confident we are, we just look inexperienced and lower in rank. However, as we age and appear more masculine, we have more authority in society, making us more attractive on that front too. Basically, when we're too young, it shows.

I used to not like myself. I didn't try hard enough because I didn't care for trying hard enough. I didnt care at all. I just went with the flow of everything. Not thinking twice about anything...not thinking for myself, just caring what other people thought. If anything, high self confidence and high self esteem means you believe and can achieve if you put your mind to it. "If at first you don't succeed, try. Try again"

"Stop caring about whether you're a good or bad person" - Prager University
Seriously though, this video is taking the postmodernist-inspired concept of self-esteem, as a self-judgement not based on any objective facts about oneself, as a substitute for the actual phenomenom of self-judgement. Which is a real thing, and should be.
You Should judge yourself as fundamentally good or bad so as to know if you are moral and ethical or not - otherwise, how would you know? Besides, it's kind of an inescapable judgement that is being passed emotionally wether anyone wants to or not. Denying those feelings wont help anyone.
Real self-esteem (in the word's original meaning) is based on reason, as in knowing reasons for ones self worth. Read "the psychology of self esteem" by nathaniel branden. This phenomenon of fake self esteem is mentioned in the book as "pseudo self esteem" because it's not based on objective facts or objective value judgements.

I believe you have self-esteem mistaken with ego. They are as different as a tree is from the birds and things that come in and out of the tree. The things that come in and out of the tree are like our tests we fail and our position on the football team. The wrong thing to do is to associate those things (ego) with who we are (self esteem) We should not think highly of ourselves that we are the captain of the football team, nor should we associate ourselves with the failing test score. Those are all things of the ego. That will mess us up every time. The thing that allows us to get up after we fail should be independant of all that. We should strive to hold our ego at zero and invest fully in our self-esteem. It's what allows us to get back up after the worst of calamities rocks our world. We are independent of those failures, just as the birds are only nesting in the tree temorarily. They are not a part of the tree. You are a tree with infinite possibilities. Don't associate who you are with the birds coming in and out. In this world you are not defined by what happens to you, but by how you deal with it, get through it, and rise above it.

Self esteem would truly be ego driven. Actually its just a phrase to use instead of saying your ego. Self respect and Confidence are not the same as admiration for ones self. We should not admire ourselves, its other people that give us esteem ( or veiw us with esteem). Now I know that the term self esteem is defined as having self respect but this video is to point out that the psychology behind the word as it is defined is wrong. If esteem = admiration as defined. Then saying self-esteem is saying self admiration, which is not the same as self respect. The confusion is really created by one simple thing. The term as defined by psychologist. And the term being defined by the root word esteem.

That's very well spoken, but unfortunately untrue. Ego and self esteem are virtually synonyms. If you have high ego, you won't try to be better, because you feel like you are good enough. Same with self esteem. And the notion that self esteem helps you get back up is wrong. Self esteem doesn't do that, determination and striving for excellence does. Self esteem fools you into thinking you're already at your goal, blinding you from what you can do. Failure brings you down, self esteem keeps you down, and determination gets you up.

It's possible to have self-esteem and self-awareness of your flaws at the same time. You understand that you do some things right and some things wrong.

Esteem: Respect or admiration, typically for a person.
Self-Esteem: Confidence in one's own worth or abilities.

This video was too generalized for something that has been interpreted differently by many people in this day and age. Self-esteem, the word itself, has, for the longest time, for me, been the definition of my self worth. Do I actually care about what I think? Do I cherish myself in a healthy way? Do I really have something I can offer to the world? Am I really not worthless? For the longest time, I have suffered from mental illness with chronic depression and anxiety, its toxic feelings of negativity having clouded my judgement of myself (and others) for years before I realized that my brain created so many negative ions, I felt awful all the time no matter where I was or what I did. Medicine, counseling, and God have helped me reshape my thinking and begin the long journey of healing, which, I guess you could say, is the prize for having WORKED HARD to achieve a sense of positive self imagery and that I'm actually worth something. None the less, I believe the term "Self-esteem" often doesn't always define itself in its original terms. Do you know how many people I've talked to who use words in a way that are the complete opposite of their original context? Too often. Way too often. This video is going to be interpreted incorrectly a lot. Misunderstandings are going to arise a lot from this video because of its over-simplified context. The term "self-esteem" from your experience is true for YOUR EXPERIENCE. Do you know how many people interpret self-esteem differently? I'm one of them. Although, to be fair, the underscoring moral of "Work hard, stop letting feelings get in your own way of success, and remember that things must get done regardless of how you feel." are truths I face everyday being a mom. There is always something I don't want to do that must be done...because I am responsible for my life and another life now present in my own life.

What if I just stared to learn, I don't know, the guitar? I'm not great at playing the guitar but I've started. Not confident because I'm not confident in my skills but I'm proud of me for starting. Is that having self esteem? Isn't it justified? Why else would I continue to learn the guitar if I don't have that since of pride from time to time? Sometimes learning is lame, so I might not enjoy it the whole time.
Really interested in peoples responses if your bored enough to chime in.

@@joshlexcelius2573 Let me give you my two cents as a piano teacher in China, where LOTS of parents force their children to learn musical instruments from a young age (as young as 3). Some children are simply good (talented), easy to pick up, have better musical sense (inherent) while others aren't. And get this, children are more likely to like playing the piano if they're good (talented) at it, since they could actually enjoy the music rather than treating it as a chore. So to sum up, just because u're interested in something doesn't mean you're talented in it, but having talent in something can definitely boost your interest to it.

You must be an arrogant, self centered asshole if you feel "proud" just because your started learning something, guitar in this case. Save your "pride" for that time when you actually achieve something in that field, like playing your first song, even if it's a very easy to play one, heck, even playing the "circle of C " correctly..This is like me being proud for paying for a gym membership and still cant lift more or look any better than when I started

I think self esteem is important, because if someone thinks he is not good at something, then he'll just give up.
Only if someone believe in himself, love himself,he will then continue with life happily and love others, and hopefully even succeed.

This is great. I’m so glad I found this. I’m sick of this high self-esteem crap. Self esteem doesn’t exist. I blame some of my breakups on my partners having strong “self-esteems”. This stuff is making all of American society borderline narcissistic.

A few years back, my child's school held a science fair where, you guessed it, EVERYONE received a ribbon...the lesson in the end was "You don't have to work harder than everyone else to succeed, everyone will come out on top regardless of effort." Sad, but true.

I always viewed self-esteem as that thing that stops you from demeaning yourself by doing things that make you appear desperate, fragile, or needy. So if you try to make plans with a woman, and she doesn't get back to you, self esteem would be that thing that stops you from contacting her again when she's clearly not interested. Or when she breaks up with you, self-esteem, is that thing that stops you from begging her to take you back. Or if you get yelled at by your boss, self esteem is that thing that stops you from sitting in a corner and crying about it.

The first thing I noticed about "Public School" was that it is socialization doubletalk (mandated)
Education became force (against will) learning about stuff that no one in his right mind would care about (at the age of 6, when recess was interesting)
...the 3 "R's" would be easily absorbed in puberty ...when 'interest' would make you 'want' to know about everything cognitive
...How I felt (about myself) came in a distant 2nd to what I knew about the world and what I wanted to know to compete in the marketplace
...The 'baby-talk' only emerged when I was dealing with 'girlfriends' that thought I was a momma's boy ...not

I like who I am, I have self-esteem because I am good at recognizing what I do wrong and changing it. I like when I do good things and feel bad when I do something wrong. Self-esteem is something I have myself. No one can give me that, I can blow off complements, and think of myself poorly, but I don't, because I have self-esteem, not that I am better than others, or that I need an award or be praised for being me, I just accept who I am and I am happy with what I do good, and am constantly trying to understand what I do wrong or badly, and try to change or improve upon it.
