- Greg Norman made golf in the 1990's. He was always in there making 6 or 7 birdies in a row and giving the crowd something to cheer about. Two majors a little light for such a great player. He should have keep me as his instructor, I was the first american !
@stevepising
Late wrist set used to hurt him, sure, but it was that huge lateral move combined with the right foot slipping that did him in at critical times, usually with the big push. Still, I think this guy was the most underappreciated #1 player in history.
yeah you can certainly see what you are describing in the great players swings, i've had contact with a lot of different instructors over the last couple of years due to my mothers job and the more i learn, the more i think golf instruction (aside from a very select few) has gone straight down the toilet, we have gone backwards in so many ways. thanks for the reply :)
@sirazzatron
I'm actually thrilled you remember that. Yup, for sure, when he was in that run at #1, if he was playing well everybody else could go home. It was every bit as good as Nicklaus or Woods when he was in form.
Bill Glasson, MIT, was president of Hughes Missile made this machine for me in 1973. Light cell's are the key ! All the professionals that I have tested I used the same machine. It gives, path, face at impact, ball speed, club head speed. Most all of my juniors grew up hitting on this machine. Pat Perez got it up to 130 mph a few years after he saw John Daly hit 128 mph. i agree with all your comments carl! keep these amazing videos coming!! you deserve great thanks for sharing these videos!!
Beautiful!!!!
Amazing video, as always
Watch that right foot slipping about at :26!
He was a great player but his over aggressive swing and preference for power over rhythm and timing probably cost him a few big tournaments. What i'm most impressed about in this video is his lovely shaft plane on the way down - he doesn't let the club get stuck behind him at all. A key reason for all those long, straight high shots he hit.
I think his biggest issue was the ultra late wrist set he used, but i'll remember Greg for his sportsmanship
Nicklaus did set his wrists late after a wide backswing, but he didn't let the wrists collapse like Greg did. Jack had relatively little wrist action compared to Greg so you are comparing apples and oranges really. Jack's lack of wrist action was one reason he made few mistakes under pressure.
And it's no good stating Norman didn't swing aggressively - he went after the ball like few others ever have. If he had learned to throttle back and pride accuracy over power, he'd have won more.
Thats for sure " they went right " not sure why ? His favorite swings were 1985 and 1986 ! His maximum speed on my swing speed machine was 121 mph. His crusing speed 120 mph. Davis Love max 125 mph, crusing speed 116 mph. Fred Couples max 123 crusing speed 115. Thus the difference in smoothness ! Carl Welty
wow i never realised until seeing this that greg had a very mike austin style swing
Scheffler back foot action?
Perfect
Yeah I like those studio videos. What kind of swing speed machine was it?
Great!
hey carl, was this video before gregs time with butch harmon or during?
It’s really interesting watching the GWS……. Have a look at his back heel…… surprisingly to many and a lesson to most, his heel is on the ground at the point of content which, in effect, allows him to easily keep his head behind the ball. Try it and I’ll guarantee better contact. It is essential to stay behind the ball. I’m broke , just send money . Aussie Al 🏌️♂️
maintaining consistency with that big powerful swing was Norman’s Achilles heel, he was always a swashbuckling type of golfer which made him fun to watch... For ball striking consistency and perfection nobody compaired to Ben Hogan and nobody ever will... IMHO
tiger woods is best ball striker ever.
Tiger Woods is not known as the greatest ball striker, the best player ever - maybe
@@tubemaniac206 is that a joke? Tiger is all over the course with his driver. Average ball striker for a pro. Great recovery skills and clutch putting was his saving grace.
** if he doesn't move aggressively through impact it goes right** typo
well almost all the greats had something very unique about their swings so that would make sense
that swing is so hard to actually do...his left arm is so high at the top that he required a lot of timing....and he has a flying elbow...so he was really really good to be able to hit shot after shot with good timing
LEGEND.HE USED THE WRONG BALL, GOT TO MUCH BACKSPIN. SHOULD HAVE USED A TITLEIST AND NOT THE NEW TOUR EDITION AT THE TIME.
Fyi, you got Norman all backwards man. Nicklaus had an ultra late wrist set too, that's where Greg got it he copied Jack. And Jack won 18 majors with it so it's pretty impossible that that is the problem. And Norman didn't swing aggressively for power as much as he did for accuracy and timing. He didn't turn that well so it he does move through impact aggressively it goes right. Almost all his bad shots under pressure were tentative swings that went right.
i remember him for being a perennial bridesmaid
His swing mechanics got worse when he went to Butch.
Actually Norman went to Butch because under pressure he hit a lot or irons way right, this swing so much timing, it is the reason it didn’t hold up on some high pressure shots, his swing with Butch got shorter and firmer at the top, but his game was already on the downhill.
Always too steep imo
