I covered this same method with Major triads here if you missed it: ua-cam.com/video/oCCGOLXv4hQ/v-deo.html Get these down and I promise, you will never see the fretboard in the same way again. Beyond anything else, triads expose how this beautiful thing actually works!
You should have seen my 👀 when I GOT IT! WOW. That top note down an octave was key!! It was a pretty cool thing! Grabbing the guitar to practice around the circle of 5ths!
Yup, that’s it. We were just talking about this in The Studio. These moments are key to understanding new methods of understanding. And besides that, they are fun :) Glad you’re here, Alfreda!
Another delightfully dense dissemination of didactic delights. I’ve been spending a lot of time with the major triads, this is a great nudge a bit further down the road. I also really appreciate the “archeology” aside. A great way of starting in an unknown place and tracing back to a familiar location. Love it.
This is really powerful knowledge when your in the business we're in. This is an awesome lesson and basics 101 of playing lead. I suggest everyone out there watch to pay close attention to this one, save it, and watch multiple time for longterm memory. R, 3rd, 5th = major R, b 3rd, 5th = minor The basics to chord building, and an good lesson in recognition and use of triads. A great piece of knowledge. Great job Chris. I hope this gets a lot of people thinking. It did me.

I enjoy your channel and although a fair bit of it is beyond my level I like the way you make the guitarist think about how and what they play. A thinking person's guitar channel is my opinion. Good stuff.
The way I've been working on these (been stuck in the triad woodshed for a while)... is staying the same set of strings and going up and down the neck. I love this approach! As usual, and AWESOME explanation and information sharing!
A few folks had been asking for the minor chord version...and you know me, I'd really like to see folks leverage the major triad video and be able to turn them into ANY chord. But, I thought "who am I to deny folks a vid on the minor triads!?" And here we are! I had fun doing this one!
Hey Chris I loved this lesson I think for me what might have helped a little more was connecting the notes to the caged chording system. It helped me a lot with major triads and might help someone else out. Again thanks for the awesome videos
The Pep Guardiola of guitar teachers... My dream was always to be a lead guitarist (for me, in private) I grasped a few scales very early on, totally neglecting the chord/rhythm side of things (I know) This, this lesson is exactly what I needed. I will take it, I will persist, I will practice & I will learn. Thank you so very much.... Liked & subscribed (even though I will be hammering this lesson until I know it verbatum).
@@curiousguitarist Thank you on so many levels. I hope the Pep reference came across as intended. Apart from the similar appearance, Pep is widely thought of as the best football (soccer) coach in the world. 💪😎
Hey Chris, just recently found your channel. You post some really great stuff and I think you’re the best music theory instructor on UA-cam! You teach in a very conversational and easy to understand way, and I really appreciate that. My question for you, where should I start if I’m learning Blues Guitar? I know the A minor blues scale, the I IV V chord progressions, and how to move shapes of the pentatonic scale to different keys. You have a lot of really great videos on this channel, just not sure exactly where I should dive in. Any support or direction is greatly appreciated! Thank you!
Hey Chris. I really get a ton from these lessons and truly appreciate you putting them out.💯 I’m having trouble however getting in my mind how to identify a #9 or 11 or… of the scale the way you do effortlessly. Wondering if you had any method on how to achieve this. Your the best 👍💯🎸
Well here I'm only looking at he R, b3 and 5. But for identifying any of these scale tones, I think the biggest progress you can make is to say the numbers as you play the scale, nice and slow at first, then after a while you can see them all VERY clearly. Hope that helps! As far as the 9, 11 and 13, these are "extensions". This video might help with finding these: ua-cam.com/video/g8Zr_9nNAWI/v-deo.html
Another great lesson. So, I have been drilling the major triads a la your video for months now, and they are finally starting to become automatic. Seems like I'll need to do the same for minor triads now. It's tempting to think "if I just follow the formula (root on bottom string, third on bottom string, fifth on bottom string) going up the neck, I won't have to learn and drill the shapes for so long, but the shapes are so unique in each case that it seems like the only way to have them at your fingertips is drilling them. N'est ce pas Chris?
What do you mean by take it around the circle the fifths? I know what the circle of 5ths is and kinda how to use jt. Do you mean just do it for every key as you go around the circle?
how did you know I would ask about that dreaded C-sharp7sharp 9 ? Thank you so much for making guitar playing new and exciting again . What a wonderful teacher ,now I just wish I knew what he said, lol just kidding ☮️💕 jen
