Nice new subwoofers! I have listened to them at the Prolight + sound 2014 last April. They are great subwoofers with loads of power and functions. I have talked to an employee from Electro-voice and he has instructed me the DSP at the back and several applications where you can use them. Now I own 1 ELX118P sub with the ELX115P tops, I am going to extend this set to 2 subwoofers but also in the future an extra ETX set. You can defenitely hear the difference between the ELX118P and the ETX-18SP.
So doug. Right now we are looking at 4 ZLX-12P and 2 ETX-18SP. Total minimal wattage we are looking at 2000 watts (ZLX-12P) 1000 (ETX-18SP) = 3000 watts min and 4000 watts + 3600 watts = 7600 watts max. I don't think y'all needs to rent anymore subs from renters. Have fun!
Total continuous wattage is actually somewhere around 2500 watts. The ZLX boxes are only 250wrms boxes and the ETX subs, based on their power draw, are only 750wrms subs. Any homecomings or larger events we have we'll most definitely have to rent a lot more subs for.
I know me and Alex talk extensively about these subs but can you feel them in your chest when far on the dance floor in an event. These subs are quite good but I think that there are better options in terms of volume out there.
Hi Guys, I enjoy watching your videos. Congrats on all your success and growth. I was watching the school dance that you did with the etx-18sp subs. As you all know, teenage dances are demanding and high energy. The etx-18sp is a great sounding and loud sub, however it seems like your gigs are usually school dances. Have you had a listen, or rented yorkville ls801p subwoofers? They get a lot louder then the etx, and have the booming bass that is needed at school dances. The best part about it is they can be purchased for around $1100 new. They are pretty heavy which is no big deal, you have plenty of help. They DON'T sound as good as the etx subs, but you would need at least 3-4 etx's to keep up with 2 ls801's. Also, Have you noticed that your zlx tops hit the limiters pretty early? Everything i've read about them say that they sound good, but just run out of gas early. Have you listened to the etx tops or the zxa5 tops. The zxa5 top is so loud that most dj's use 3-4 subs per top. Once again, not trying to knock what you do or how you do it. Just talking shop and sharing information. Keep growing and doing your thing.
Thanks, and no offense taken man! We have not rented Yorkville LS801P subs. However, from just looking at their specs and hearing what other people have to say about them, we would never even rent them for a gig, much less purchase them. Based on other people's verdicts, they're loud but very very sloppy. Plus 45hz at -3db? The EV does 32hz. That in itself is already worth it. We play a ton of music with really low sub bass content, and the Yorkie would be useless for that. It would do great at the punchy start of a bass kick, but I'm more concerned with being able to reproduce the consistent tone that follows. Plus the Yorkies are really ugly. A carpeted enclosure? What the hell were they thinking?! Actually we haven't noticed that the limiters in our ZLX's hit early, and that's because we weren't expecting a ton of volume out of them. They do exactly what we expected them to and we only use them for what they're suited for. No, we haven't listened to the ETX or ZXA5 tops, but we might have an opportunity in the near future to use the ETX-35P tops at an event. As for the ZXA5 tops, how can they possibly be that loud when their max calculated spec is only 133db max? Especially when almost all the time calculated never coincides with real world levels. Thanks for the conversation! I really enjoy talking sound with other educated people.
Alex Berry 1 zxa5 is equal to 4 zlx15's, once you've experience one you will be force to rethink everything you thought you knew about speaker specs ;)
pdidyp That makes perfect sense. EV has a 10db discrepancy between the spec peak rating and measured continuous output for the ZLX, so it would make sense that at a spec peak of 133db, the ZXA5 would do a 123 continuous. But still, that's about as loud as an ETX top, which isn't crazy loud, and 3-4 subs per top? I mean I guess it depends on the sub.
Alex Berry pretty much all the specs we read will be flat out lies by the manufacture to promote sales so they are to NEVER be trusted . the zxa5 is at least 3db louder that the etx15 so the difference is very noticeable so the zxa5 is "crazy loud". it is very rare to find a speaker spec that can be trusted so they are to be taken like a grain of salt. 1 zxa5 can keep up with 3 of my jbl vrx918sp subs which are equal to if not louder than your etx subs. i26.photobucket.com/albums/c109/pdidy_/536642_10151073896078979_1985940799_n_zpsd9e5ebdf.jpg
Aracely Facundo Live Mode has to be used otherwise you can damage the driver. EV's "Music Mode" has such an aggressive EQ slope that the driver cannot handle thus sending it into temp limit quickly. You should use Live mode as it doesn't apply the EQ slope and allows for the driver to perform optimally.
Hope your impressed with the sub as much as I am! I have three of them looking for a fourth soon and they get the job done! Off topic but what version of the song "tequila" do you play at your gigs? Too many remixes I don't know which one to choose! Keep up the good work!
Thanks! And actually, we weren't as impressed with them as we thought we would be, but we think that was due to other things. I'll just copy a previous comment explaining it well: "Unfortunately, I'm gonna have to agree with you on being disappointed with the sound at default settings. When we were playing the sub in our house (which is why I had the volume at -16db so I wasn't breaking things) it sounded unbelievable. Hit every note in basically every song I played at the same volume. Super clean and incredibly deep. But as soon as we took these to a gig, I was extremely unimpressed with them. However, I think the issue here is that the subs weren't coupled, and we were pretty far away from a wall, which we think contributed to a lot of cancellation problems due to sound waves bouncing off the back wall and coming back up and canceling everything out on the dance floor. Because when I would go sit in front of one of the subs, it was insanely loud and clean. Way cleaner, deeper, and a decent bit louder than the QSC HRP181i's we used to rent, which I've actually heard is better than the KW181. This indicates to me that they have some real potential, and I'm really looking forward to putting them through their paces. Also, I've heard from people online that the box limits before they feel it should, and simply switching the box into "LIVE" mode instead of "MUSIC" mode fixes this problem. I'm gonna try this soon and see what happens." Also, the song you're referring to is Vinnie Maniscalco - TaKillya.
I have had these since November 2016 I bought the 12p ETX, I bought these and I'm having problems with them clipping already ? I'm a soloist singer, I've only ever set them up on ODB same on my mixer, I don't drive them at all, I even have a BBE Sonic Maximiser, I use DYNACORD mixer newest model unpowered version, yet my EV ETX 12p have been clipping I'm very disappointed after spending over £2000 on these, I used to have EV ZX5 15" powered with Crown XTX 4000 amp lovely sound flawless never missed a beat in 9 years, wish I'd kept them, only reason I changed was carrying to much for a soloist, will be contacting EV really disappointed. Brilliant review though.
That's very weird, as we've never once been able to clip our ETX-12P's. Sure they have their downfalls, and aren't as loud as we liked, but we've never had a problem with them clipping.
SLM Entertainment I'm shocked to to be honest, I've always used EV, I'm Spent over £2,000 on these speakers, I'm taken them back tomorrow to have them tested, I think the limiter is coming in to soon or there is some kind of fault there with the speakers ?? Thank you for your reply though.
I have a pair of ZX5 and also have gone to a pair of ETX 15p's. They both sound great! I do get a little more warmth on the ETX than the ZX5 cue to the LF transducer(woofer). Also because of the technology- you get more control from the ETX back panel. I would suggest you check your gain structure from your mixer and then onto the rest of your processing before you patch into your speakers. Sonic Maximizers are dynamic sound additives but for real clean sound to vocals(especially yours), I wouldn't use them. They just muddy up the sound more. You should get a good 1/3 octave equalizer (Ashley, Rane, DBX, or KlarkTeknik) and tune up your system to any room acoustics. On the clipping- make sure you are using the right set up mode on the speakers; just use enough decibels for the amplification to your environment too. No need to go crazy loud. Hope this helps you!
SpaceMountainLarry I've been to a club that had a full EAW install, but was a decent bit older, I'd say from around the '90s. It was one of the harshest, most painful systems I've ever heard in my entire life, but it was old and the FOH engineer probably drove the system waaayyy too hard. Can't speak for the newer stuff though. Did you have any specific gear in mind that you'd like advisement on?
Alex Berry Thank you so much for your reply! Well see here's my issue: I have the opportunity to purchase 28 fully functional KF300 cabinets from Disneyland in California for cheap. They were built for the park in 1995 and they were designed to be mounted outside were designed to be completely weather resistant. They were used for about 16 hours per day everyday up until they were replaced in 2014. For most of the day, they played background music. However, it was their parade PA and firework show soundtrack PA system where they turned them up to 85-90% of their volume. They never overdrove them to my knowledge and they only replaced them because they were getting too hard for them to keep up the maintenance on. They assured me all the drivers worked and all of their crossovers worked (they're passive). I know these are more of an install-type speaker, but you seem to know a lot about PA speakers in general so I thought I would try to get your opinion on if I should jump on that offer.
If you've never listened to them before I would definitely give a pair a listen before you make such a large investment. But they look to be good cabinets. Seems to me to be basically just an older version of something like the EV ETX-35P. They're kinda OK frequency response wise (a good bit of 5db peaks and valleys), but there's around 10% THD at around 8kHz with only 25 watts being pumped into the cabinet. So I would definitely give them a listen, and don't go easy on them when you do so that you know what you're getting into. And then after hearing them if you like the sound, I see absolutely no reason to not buy them.
Alex Berry Well see here's the thing. I got the opportunity to listen to them in the park last June while they were still installed. I took one thing away from that experience: they are VERY loud and very clear sounding, even off-axis. I definitely feel they would need an accompanying subwoofer for larger events, but they seemed to handle their own when it came to the low end with no (audible) distortion. My only problem with them is that each weighs over 100 lbs each is a bit off-putting IMO. Thanks for your input!
SpaceMountainLarry Well, big sound comes with big speakers and big weight! Not really much getting around that, at least not yet. And if you've heard them and like the sound, like I said I see no reason not to get them. I'm actually kind of jealous!
Hi guys. What is your opinion on using these after having them in use for a while? I know in one of your videos you mentioned that these were emitting a burning smell? I currently have ev zlx 15ps looking to add some subs.
+Eric George I don't think they're worth the price. They don't get anywhere near as loud as they're advertised to, don't get very low, and don't sound very good when run loud. In that video you're referencing, I was unknowingly sending a clipped signal into the subs (even though that shouldn't matter since clipping is just the addition of harmonics and the low pass filter built into the ETX should have cut those out) with our old Behringer mixer that would clip even though the signal lights indicated I was nowhere near clipping. That's what caused the burning smell, as the voice coils were literally starting to fry because they were getting too hot, which still shouldn't have happened due to the low pass filter. These are very peculiar subs, and definitely not worth the $1500 price point IMO.
+Alex Berry Okay awesome. thank you! Have you ever heard of PK Sound before? It's a Canadian Subwoofer maker. Really good sound. They use them at a lot of the clubs and events up here.
+Eric George I have, and I've heard 12 of the CX800s in person before. I liked them a lot, but they're not very efficient speakers. If you want the most bang for your buck, the most output for a given amount of power, the most output for a given amount of space, and the best sounding bass you'll ever hear, check out Danley Sound Labs. A single TH118 powered by a Crown XLS2000 is worth 4 ETX-18SP's, will sound MUCH better than the ETX, and a TH118 with the XLS together costs about as much as a pair of 18SP's.
+Sound Back The Nexo Geo S12 series isn't in the same category as the ETX series. The ETX series are powered MI grade loudspeakers that are pretty much meant to be used alone, not coupled (apart from the 35P which can be tight packed effectively). The Nexo Geo S12 series are passive, pro level loudspeakers that are meant to be coupled together, and are very modular.
I have 2 of these subs and honestly I'm disappointed with the sound. I had one subwoofer speaker blow on me about 2 weeks ago although I never play it past the limit. EV repaired it without any issues but I was very disappointed with the quality. I ended up renting a qsc181 to replace it while in repair and could not believe the difference. The Qsc was deeper and could take more pounding, while my EV kept complaining that it was limiting and and times peaking. The QSC limit light never even flickered... I am curious to see what your review is. Also, I noticed your playing the sub at -16db, why is that?? Why not just run it at 0db(default)?
EV put a premature limit on the sub to let the dj know that they will start to limit the sub if they increase the volume. The ETX does have a much higher max volume. the only light you should worry about on the ETX is the TEMP light. The EV hits very low if you go into the DSP you can alter the sound to hit lower.
Yes I agree that it is very premature compared to other subs in the same category. The thing is that it does not take much to reach the peak light and then the temp. Once you reach the limit, it probably has a threshold of about 5 percent more and it starts to hit the peak and almost at the same time the temp light. I am running the subs at default setting for music and 0db. Like I mentioned earlier even playing it under the limit, made my sub speaker blow. This might have been a manufacturer defect as they gave me no problems or questioned me when I called them. It can also mean that EV has great customer service so I don't want to speculate on that. I'm looking forward to seeing your review in a couple of weeks and see if you have similar opinions. If I could take it all back I would definitely opt to purchase the QSC 181 since the sound and pounding of the speaker was more impressive. I am not bashing The ETX18sp as being a bad sub at all just my opinion on comparing the ETX18sp against other subs in the market at the same level. This sub is definitely a good sub with a clear sound and great enclosure(quality of EV) but I would not recommend for mobile DJ's that are looking for the "less is more" outcome.
i recommend oh rent a QSC to compare it with your ETX and I bet your decision will be easy. The enclosure is also smaller on the QSC. I am by no means a QSC fanatic or customer as I own no QSC equipment but just making comparisons based on my experience with both subs.
Aracely Facundo Unfortunately, I'm gonna have to agree with you on being disappointed with the sound at default settings. This indicates to me that they have some real potential, and I'm really looking forward to putting them through their paces. Also, I've heard from people online that the box limits before they feel it should, and simply switching the box into "LIVE" mode instead of "MUSIC" mode fixes this problem. I'm gonna try this soon and see what happens. Also, we were never looking for the less is more thing. We wanted the best sounding, lowest hitting, loudest, most reliable single powered 18" cab we could find, and this was it (apart from Danley stuff but their stuff is stupid expensive). I'd actually prefer if these subs weren't in their low profile form factor. But it's something we're willing to deal with. One last thing is, they're definitely louder than our old Behringer subs were. No doubts there. Now just comes the finessing with the speaker to get the most out of it as I possibly can.
"ave mixer" doesn't return any relevant results on Google, but we have a Behringer X32 Rack that we use primarily now and are quite happy with, and a Mackie 802VLZ4 for analogue backup and super simple stuff.
If I want to buy me one sub, should I buy a etx 18sp or Yorkville LS801P ? Thanks for the feedback ! Btw Im only listening to edm, dubstep, progressive house... Sorry for my english :)
+TheMrL3MON4DE Neither. If you want one sub, you should get either a Danley Sound Labs TH118, or a Yorkville LS2100P. The TH118 is passive, but with Crown XLS amplification it should cost you about as much as two brand new ETX-18SP's, and will perform equivalent to around four 18SP's. The LS2100P is obviously powered, but it's not as loud (although close) as the TH118 and it's heavier. But it's also cheaper.
+TheMrL3MON4DE You could also check out the Bassboss SSP118. It's not as loud as the TH118 or LS2100P, but it is powered and gets significantly lower than the LS2100P. Since you're running edm, you might really love the extra low frequencies. It's also significantly smaller than a TH118, which might be something else for you to consider. However, overall, the TH118 is probably still the best option in terms of volume, sound quality, and price.
+TheMrL3MON4DE One ssp118 would sound WAAAAAAY better than one ls801p, but it would not be as loud. It should be noted that the ls801p is almost useless for edm because of how not-low it gets. The ls2100p would be the same volume as one 801p, but it gets much lower and therefore is better for the style of music you want. The cheapest decent option is probably the 2100p depending on how truthful the specs are. The reason I say the TH118 is a sure thing is because Danley lives up to their specs, but the Yorkville 2100p also has potential to be similar.
+oswaldo mendoza Low frequency extension, maximum SPL capability, sound quality, build quality and weight, and price. Without ever having heard the EKX sub, I can say with almost 100% certainty that the ETX series is better, based purely on price and the fact that they're made by the same company. EV would never make a product that's less expensive than a product that they already offer and have it be better than the product they already offer. That would just be bad business.
+Alex Berry thank you, I want to buy a low esque you recommend this? JBL wanted to buy the 18 or the indivudual ranging 2000W together. which can not buy, help please.
+oswaldo mendoza I'm sorry, but I honestly have no idea what you're trying to say here. So unless you can reword your response to something more understandable, I can't help you.
Mr.Krabs Yea but the cardiod isn't benefiting anybody really. If we needed to use six, I would rather get that extra volume out front on the floor rather than removing some of it from behind the subs. The only situations cardiod is really applicable is with live productions where you want less bass on the stage for a singer or a rapper or whatnot, or in a hotel for a wedding or a prom or something as to not disturb the ballroom behind you. Other than that, if we're just DJing at a homecoming or something like that, who cares if the bass is loud on the stage?
Lolol there's 0 reason to buy QSC over EV, other than a longer warranty. But in 3 years time (EV warranty), we'll probably have better/different speakers anyways.
I love how excited Doug gets when you get new equipment. Love watching how this company is growing and shows how happy you are :)

Limin watts mean nothing, in time once you guys have gained experience you will see how meaningless it is when gauging any speaker.

Yorkville's are loud , but they don't go low , they are just a one note sub , not very musical.
Does the sub outputs have a hi pass filter going to the tops?
Not as far as I know. We sold them a little while ago so it's been a while since I've used them though.
So I see you are from the Camp Hill area? I am from York PA and I was curious on who you rent your equipment from what I saw in past videos.

That's very weird, as we've never once been able to clip our ETX-12P's. Sure they have their downfalls, and aren't as loud as we liked, but we've never had a problem with them clipping.
SLM Entertainment I'm shocked to to be honest, I've always used EV, I'm
Spent over £2,000 on these speakers, I'm taken them back tomorrow to have them tested, I think the limiter is coming in to soon or there is some kind of fault there with the speakers ?? Thank you for your reply though.
You want to say that the frequencies are greatly cut when performing vocals?
Have you guys ever had any experience with EAW gear?
+Alex Berry Okay for sure! definitely will check those out! thanks for the input and advice
Eric George Yup, no problem!
Can you guys please help me out I'm trying to decide between the ETX18SP or the kw181
kw are smaller and lighter, but sound way worse. if you can manage the extra size and weight, get the etx. no question
Thank you Doug so very much I really do appreciate it I'm going to go ahead and keep the ETX
what mixer are you using
Behringer XENYX 802, but we don't recommend it as it's pretty low quality.
WHICH IS BETTER THE WEST EV Ekx18sp ETX-18SP ???
ETX
SLM you guys should buy a Novation Launchpad and also a Mpc40
Why?
Nexo Geo S12 or Etx Series?
+Sound Back The Nexo Geo S12 series isn't in the same category as the ETX series. The ETX series are powered MI grade loudspeakers that are pretty much meant to be used alone, not coupled (apart from the 35P which can be tight packed effectively). The Nexo Geo S12 series are passive, pro level loudspeakers that are meant to be coupled together, and are very modular.
how mucht People can you whit one sub etx 18 and 2 zlx 12-p
Depends on your standards.
Yes
By my standards, 100 people absolute max with the ETX18sp. It sounds pretty awful when at loud volumes and doesn't get very low
Buy another sub. I have two ZLX 12 and two ETX 18. I plan on upgrading to two more subs and two ETX 35.
that cat just dose not give a fuck
I like the look of the QSC I need to make up my mind on a single 18 inch sub to buy.
i recommend oh rent a QSC to compare it with your ETX and I bet your decision will be easy.
Now just comes the finessing with the speaker to get the most out of it as I possibly can.
use ave mixer dude it can be found in google
+SLM Entertainment Thanks for the feedback! I'll check these subs!
+Doug Berry Thx for the feedback! In this same vein, does one ls2100p or one ssp118 beat two ls801p?
+TheMrL3MON4DE One ssp118 would sound WAAAAAAY better than one ls801p, but it would not be as loud. It should be noted that the ls801p is almost useless for edm because of how not-low it gets. The ls2100p would be the same volume as one 801p, but it gets much lower and therefore is better for the style of music you want. The cheapest decent option is probably the 2100p depending on how truthful the specs are. The reason I say the TH118 is a sure thing is because Danley lives up to their specs, but the Yorkville 2100p also has potential to be similar.
NNice!
WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE?
+Alex Berry I recommend another brand?
+oswaldo mendoza I'm sorry, but I honestly have no idea what you're trying to say here. So unless you can reword your response to something more understandable, I can't help you.
How many of these sub you think is needed for 500 / 700 people playing EDM / HIP Hop ???
depending on the size of the room, at least 8 by our standards
big sound i tell ya ,have same :)
uhm picking up 2 more and you have a cardiod setup ;)
That would be true, or we could use all four facing forward and get some good bass out in the audience.
or 6? :D you have the 2 on the bottom facing back and the top 4 facing forward xD
Why do you buy ev?
Go QSC don't waste time with EV
Lolol there's 0 reason to buy QSC over EV, other than a longer warranty. But in 3 years time (EV warranty), we'll probably have better/different speakers anyways.
QSC don't overheat. Just saying
DJTEDDY507 We've had 0 experience with EV overheating either (knock on wood). Sound quality is also much better.
