I watched this movie for the first time a day before my life went to shit last year. The day before my ex broke up with me, which in the proceeding weeks, my mother passed, and then not even two days later, my aunt and uncle died, who were my surrogate parents. This song gives me a strange comfort; a yearning for a time that was literally divided by a movie viewing. I cry hearing this version, I cry watching this movie upon rewatches, because it does take me back to the times things were blissfully ignorant. I miss you guys so much.
When I first saw this gorgeously melancholic film by Wong Kar Wai I didn't know who Fay Wong was . I was already entranced by her character and when this song by the Cranberries started I obviously recognized the melody.. and after a moment I realized it was being sung in Cantonese , and I felt it was an even more magical interpretation than the original without even speaking Cantonese ! and THEN I learned it was the girl in the film !! What a moment of realization it was . And what a work of high art by WKW . His films stir my soul and shatter my heart in exquisitely mysterious ways ❤
One of my favorite films and her performance of Dreams is such a faithful translation of Dolores O'Riordan into Cantonese as you mentioned. Romantic angst.

Apocalypse Now is one of my favorite movies. A bit of trivia. A Cavalry Scout earns a Stetson by completing a Spur Ride course or from being in combat as a Cavalry Scout. A gold rope indicates combat and silver indicates just a spur ride.
I saw Chungking Express in the cinema when it come on in Malaysia. This cover of Dreams had me hooked and a lot of other people too, it was played constantly on the radio.
It is lovely isn’t it? Faye Wong looks largely the same, it’s one of those films you can watch with the sound off and still understand everything, Hitchcockian in that regard, prefer this version to the original

@@morpheophantasm8332 Ha - no, I filmed the fish in Shanghai, as there was an aquarium in Chungking Express. I went to Honk Kong about a dozen times 2007-2018, never met the guy. He did have a cameo in Comrades: Almost a Love Story (- pinyin tian mi mi) as an English teacher and it was curious as despite being a renowned cinematographer, you did meet guys like that a lot in China during my time, but no never met him.

I couldn't film the fish too long as I read they get a bit startled by sudden movements (they hide from thunderstorms apparently), so I thought I'd use it here, a happy accident:)

Went to see Chunking Express first weekend of release. Came out and went back in again! Been in love with this version of Dreams ever since.
