As the son of an English woman growing up in Canada, I was aware from my late teens of an English aversion to (or fear of) garlic. A recent trip to England has revealed that while the food is much better than it's reputation and if you pay, you can get very skillfully prepared food, it will arrive at your table under seasoned.

At minute 0:58, she begins telling that Prince Phillip once, "Shot, cleaned and cooked a Snipe Bird." In Texas, a Snipe is mythological. Has anyone ever seen...or tasted one?
Yes most definitely. The Queen actually prefers simple foods and likes the simple things of life too. In the Palace there Royal apartment is fairly simple. She also loves simple everyday cars too.
I’m not buying it. They had a whole team of chefs. They could have eaten completely different meals and still dined together. I also don’t think it was the possibility of bad breath that kept her away from onions and garlic. I think she just didn’t like them. When she was growing up they were seen as “lower class” and probably didn’t appear on the royal menu much so she may have never acquired a taste for them. 🤷♀️
Eating alone is the best part. Sometimes, and that becomes often as you get older, you don't want, who you once called wife, or partner or what you may, anywhere within your sight.
Prince Philip once said that a strong side roast cherry would always be a great ambition forecast in his stew pops. He mention that a wine bloomer would try and escape his trench rug before a rime and instead of tow berry he always clinched to a notion.
My God! Haddock at breakfast! Just to think about it makes me nauseous and he said the French don't know how to cook breakfast... A very different culture indeed
@@suzannesewell5072 Well I trust you although I don't know what is kedgeree, some kind of rice with oriental spices maybe? Anyway I was kidding (more or less ...). Seriously it's indeed a matter of culture and the way you were raised. Basically in Latin countries, breakfast is sweet, whatever is the reason, probably because it's energizing before starting a working day. Then the principal meal is lunch and diner is lighter since you are supposed to go to bed shortly after. Consequently, for us, anything savoury just out of bed is a kind of shock just because we are not used to. In England I can live with English breakfast: tea and toasts are delicious but I need to mentally prepare myself, even waking up one hour earlier, in order to enjoy, so to speak, eggs and sausage but I can do it. In Germany they give you delicatessen and cheese and there it's physically impossible for me in the morning, so I drink a cup of coffee (what they call coffee ...) and that's it. In Norway or in some cases in England apparently they serve fish but here it's definitely a red line: should I really try, it would for sure trigger a heart attack. I was mainly reacting to Prince Philip's statement about the fact that" the French don't know how to cook breakfast" because, although he was not known to be a great diplomat, it's a value judgement and that's not fair. We can say the same about foreigners, nobody is right or wrong, there are just different cultures coming from local constraints. Perhaps Norwegians eat fish at breakfast because they had nothing else to eat in the past (nothing grows overthere)...
Its ok that they had different opinions on food. I can see being careful of your breath while closely in contact with people. But I can see adding a kick now and then to a dish- if for no other reason than to brwak up the monotony.
I enjoy hearing stories of royal personalities indulging in gastronomic creations - aka cooking. It would be amazing for one of the more famous and secretive gastronomic societies in Europe to have an open house with some of their more famous members cooking famous recipes. There are rumors of Prince Consort Henrik of Denmark being a Cordon Blue as well as Prince Phillipe being handy in the kitchen. And tales King Carl of Sweden being a rather skilled baker, baking is one of the trickiest skills in any chef's repertoire. Rumors abound about Prince Henrik, to put it politely, ruminating over collapsed cheese cakes, a very tricky ting to bake. But only their families know the truth and they're not talking.

I LOVE salmon. It’s my favourite seafood. I’ll eat it almost any way (other than in a fish pie).
I think I’d have made a good dinner guest for Prince Philip we have a very similar food pallet.
I'm an American but isn't bacon, eggs and kedgeree all a part of what is known as a 'traditional English breakfast?'
@@retroguy9494 no.
Bacon, eggs, sausages, baked beans, hash browns are part of a full English.
Kedgeree is a French dish originally
@@EmilyCheetham Ah! Thank you for telling me! I don't know how a person could eat all that for breakfast! For me, its one scrambled egg, two slices of toast with butter and a bit of vanilla yogurt and coffee. I eat the same thing every day! LOL
@@retroguy9494 people don’t eat a full English breakfast all the time and they usually eat it as a brunch (breakfast/lunch). I only eat it a few times a year when I’m at a convention or staying at a hotel on holiday. If I have a full English breakfast As I squid before I’d eat it later (around 10am or 11am and I wouldn’t have any lunch). Some people also eat it as their lunch or dinner in cafe’s that sell it all day.
@@EmilyCheetham Ah that makes sense. And I KNOW what brunch is; we DO have that here in the States as well! LOL! I would think if people in England ate breakfast like that every day, they would be the size of Queen Victoria and her son Bertie! 😁 Over here across the pond there used to be an old saying about English food. It went something like "if the English served breakfast for every meal the food would be perfect!' LOL
From what I have seen on occasion not only did the Queen cook she did the dishes
She never lifted a finger in her life! Why would she, with hundreds of servants to do her bidding!
@@randywatts6969
Who do you think we learned that from.
Her staff 🙄
1:22; 2:45 Great Grandpa was cooler for real than "James Bond" back then. (i.e. watch and remember him always you Royal youngsters with his DNA.) RIP Lord Phillip. Well done!
Good for him!! Eat what you like but in moderation, especially if you want to stay heart healthy. It didn't seem to bother Philip as he lived a long, long life! I eat to live but I also eat what I can afford. I also have allergies so can't eat a lot of things so my menu is somewhat limited. It may not be the healthiest food at times but it is what it is.
As the son of an English woman growing up in Canada, I was aware from my late teens of an English aversion to (or fear of) garlic. A recent trip to England has revealed that while the food is much better than it's reputation and if you pay, you can get very skillfully prepared food, it will arrive at your table under seasoned.
The Duke of Edinburgh was a good man in all things ,
Prince Phillip was also known to enjoy a good old BK Whopper. He was a rare man indeed.
The Donald Trump of England! LOL!
@@retroguy9494 One huge difference: the Prince was a man of truth and selflessness.
@@bobbywimsy6741 we should be so lucky to have Trump again.
i lived in London, their burgers are not like American burgers, they get their beef from Argentina, i like english food but their hamburger is awful.
@@bobbywimsy6741 Well, Trump never actually LIED. That's what always got him into trouble! LOL! He wasn't your typical politician. Sure he was WRONG about some things, but that's not the same as being untruthful.
Prince Philip cooking for his Queen…how lovely ❤
I can confirm. Worked with the head chef that was there when the princes were boys. You should hear the Di stories 😂 both her and Philip were pretty cool, and the queen mum was great, from one story involving the boys and some go karts 😂
Wow. That Phillip was quite a Chef. Well queen liked some of his cooking
I had foreign study in England many years ago. I came to the conclusion that most of northern europe eats a bland diet. My family came from northern Italy. I put onions and prodigious amounts of garlic in everything I eat. I love abundantly spiced food with lots of flavor.
At minute 0:58, she begins telling that Prince Phillip once, "Shot, cleaned and cooked a Snipe Bird." In Texas, a Snipe is mythological. Has anyone ever seen...or tasted one?
Do you think the queens diet is what kept her in good health this whole time?
Yes most definitely. The Queen actually prefers simple foods and likes the simple things of life too. In the Palace there Royal apartment is fairly simple. She also loves simple everyday cars too.
Either that or its those one or 2 cocktails she has daily! LOL!
@HomeChillzz2 Oh yea? I'd like to see YOU keep up HER schedule when YOU'RE 95!
This reminds me of my grandmother and grandfather but with them it was the other way around
Really fascinating to hear the way that an American pronounced those English place names!
Brilliant interesting balance
I once read an article about Philip that stated he didn't like strawberries. I don't know if that's true or not.
He was a smart man. May he R.I.P.
Hello 👋
I am literally in love with my electric skillet! I get it. Lols!
Now that the Prince has passed on, leave him alone!
Phillip was a foodie. Elizabeth was not. Elizabeth preferred to be talking about dogs, horses and cars. Phillip enjoyed a good, over-the-counter beer.
I love PP's food taste!!
Eating alone is the best part. Sometimes, and that becomes often as you get older, you don't want, who you once called wife, or partner or what you may, anywhere within your sight.
I'm not British but I did like Prince Phillip.
Haddock, made into kedgeree is great for breakfast.
I have met the Queen, she is am inspiration
Sweet thoughts:)
Hi
It is very common for husbands and wives to grow apart over the years. They develop different interests, different tastes.
lol just get me a beer that was amazing.
That is so cute.❤❤❤
I’m with Princess Philip. Why bother eating if there is no flavor and seasoning. I’d rather go without.
Philp reminds me of myself, I love curries and salmon 🤤
This pronunciation of "pain of chocolat" made me laugh so much!
And ‘No-foualk’ !
Greek food is really tasty!
The queen eats to live while he lives to eat. That's so funny. It's a good thing they never had to decide what the family meal was going to be at dinnertime.
lol!
Its the ✨balkanic✨ in him for me
My wife is from Scotch Irish stock and she can’t cook either. Just like her mother. I learned from the best, my father who was a natural.
He loved garlic? It is banned in the palace.
I understand, sir
Too cute.😋🌹
He loved garlic and spices that gave him a long life
The Queen was a light eater. When she was finished eating everybody else had to stop, hungry or not.
I was told by a person who had a few meals with him. The Queen didn't like to eat with him as he picked his nose all the time while eating food. The person called him the Royal nose picker !

the queen's healthy diet is perhaps one reason why she has outlived her beloved and looks in better health than he did whilst still alive in recent times.
You make it to your nineties on genetics luck and good eating. They both did.
@@carolinekaplan542 they are both cousins
@@louisbloom567 we all know that everyone in European royalty before they started to marry commoners were essentially cousins from Queen Victoria’s kids marrying . Same genes. But luck matters too.
Actually, Philip and Margaret were smokers, which shortened their lives. It wasn’t a good decision, but considering Prince Philip was a smoker and lived to right at 100, his food choices obviously didn’t hurt him a bit. If he hadn’t smoked, he’d most likely had more good years with his beloved Elizabeth (Cabbage).
He was 99 and she just turned 95, you can say he lived longer than her.
I read that Queen Elizabeth's favorite meal is Quail with a Plum Sauce. That doesn't sound very bland.
Happy marriage living in seperate homes
I literally don’t know how to cook without onion… but cooked it’s not a problem
