The Nigerian-Biafran war was the first proxy war where all the Great powers + defunct USSR allied against a weaker oponent Biafra. All I can hear is that the war between Nigeria and Biafra was essentially fought within Biafra. That was the first problem. If it was fought in the Nigerian side of the map or on a so-called neutral front, Biafra would have won.
Like Russia is now unfortunately doing to Ukraine, the war is usually fought on the side of those whose ideological stance started the war (e.g., Adolf Hitler's Second World War or Arab nations' aggression against Israel, etc.,) There's no such thing as fighting conventional wars in neutral lands. Biafra was not defeated in the Battle field by Nigeria, in spite of the fact that Britain, Russia, Egypt and Arab countries were supporting Nigeria with advanced military hardwares and Biafra was suffering debilitating economic blockade. In contrast, Biafrans had home made weapons and on their own, their determination, high spirit and morale was unmatched by Nigeria. The Biafrans laied down their arms through UN mediation. They were not shot out of the battle field.
