I first heard this on vinyl I borrowed from the library. I kept it for months. Unforgettable so many decades later. Richter's conception is dreamlike. Thank you!
[Starting circa 12:44] The unhatched chicks are pecking at their shells.... the master Richter, has endowed them with the breath of life.... The percussive yet feathery voice he gives them through the chattering chords, for all their slapped density undeniably melodic.... This is magic, pure and simple!
When I first heard this as a teenager, by the time the last two scenes came around, I was shaking like a leaf in the wind, and did not fall asleep until sunrise
Wow, what a phenomenal performance of Sviatoslav Richter!! He is the only one capable of creating and picturing, like a true poet, this magical piece of art! The interpretation and execution are breathtaking and bewildering!! Evidently Richter feels like a fish in the water! Astonishing and monumental!! I have the utmost admiration for the MAESTRO SVIATOSLAV RICHTER. Thanks for uploading this amazing gem!
Recorded in public, this interpretation by Sviatoslav Richter is one of the must-see performances. There are few things in the piano repertoire as powerful as "The Hut on Fowls legs / Baba-Yagá" and "The Great Gate of Kiev". Richter's way of playing, on the verge of breaking hammers, is perhaps not taught in any school, you have to bare all your soul and go deep inside yourself to be able to express all the magic of this score... I was fortunate to hear him play this piece in Symphony Hall in Boston during one of his rare visits to the US. It's one of the few musical experiences I have had that remains burned in my memory after all these years. I have never heard another pianist produce the sounds that Richter got out of that piano that day.
@@duvidl heard Richter did not like performing in the U.S. maybe he had more pressure and stress from the audience (maybe?). But I imagine that experience was to be a one time forever touch on the piano from both sides. (both literally and metaphorically speaking)
I received this recrod on vinyl in the 70's - as a young piano student, I hadn't head of Richter, but I thought his playing was magnificent! I still have the vinyl, in pristine condition.
Wahrlich unvergleichlicher Virtuose!
Sofia is greatest, I think, but both are outstanding in their metric freedom and the novel-like wideness of their conception - played by a real artist.
Tastes vary of course, but I think this is far from the best interpretation. However, I have to say you got a lot of emotion out of the recording that isn't present on the LP so congratulations! For anyone curious, I think Brendel hit the nail in the head with his recording for Philips.
I agree with some that some tempos are a but fast. Prefer Ashkenazy's more nuanced version. Richter's strength in my eyes is all Rachmaninoff, most eminently the Etudes Tableaux.
I totally disagree. The poetical and artistic qualities of Richter are phenomenal! His phantasy brings everything alive in this" Pictures of an Exhibition"! This is not Mozart.

A legendary performance. Wonderful to hear it remastered, with the coughing gone. Thank you.
I think the one with the bad coughing was from Sofia in 1958

@@schrysafis Another reason for Richter not coming more often to the US was that he did not like flying and had to undergo a long ocean voyage..

Wonderful.
Best version ever !
I’ve only heard the orchestral version, but this is really good.

You introduced me to Richter with your upload of his Bach's Well Tempered Clavier and I've been captivated by his playing ever since

1st promenade is so hurried and fast, in my opinion.
Too fast. The opening number is intended to depict someone leisurely wandering through an art exhibit, NOT dancing through it.

Horrible; no grip nor understanding of the tempo; he is rushing through the pictures as he has to go pee fast.
If music is slower than necessary, it steals more of your lifetime than necessary. I never listen to adagios.
