  • This was listed on Gumtree in April 2023. I was lucky I had a genuine, easy-to-deal-with seller, and I was especially lucky to be the first to call ... there were 550 views in the 18 hours it was advertised.
It's a 1993 BG Mazda 323 Astina with the 1.8 litre 76Kw SOHC engine and a 5 speed manual box. It's a zippy little thing, and it handles well, too! It weighs only 990 kilograms, virtually the same as the 1989 NA MX5 I have. The MX5 has the 1.6 litre DOHC engine which later grew into the 1.8 litre DOHC engine used in the BG Astina SP. The DOHC Astina engine in the SP makes 92 Kw of power.
During the past 25 years, the car's averaged only 2,700 kilometres a year and has been parked undercover. The paintwork is generally very good. There're a few minor dents and scrapes, but it presents well. I can't find any rust. The ROH alloy wheels look good, but I prefer things to be stock as a rock. The rear louvre adds to the overall look. It's funny, but I'm really happy to see wind-up windows ... how I've missed you!
Originally an ACT car, it came to Sydney (Randwick) in 2002. Prior to me, there's been 2 owners. The last owner purchased the car for $14,800 in 1998. She said the car's never been involved in an accident save for the replacement of the front bumper bar due to a small car park bump.
This is a great little car for the money. They don't seem to bring a lot. The Red Book value is listed as between $2,000 and $3,000 for a private sale. The car came complete with the Owner's Manual, Service Book, and an extended service file coving all work done on the car since new. It's had a lot of the big-ticket items already attended to: timing belt, new clutch, new CV driveshafts, etc. The big thing I have to do is the front struts/shocks, and that'll be expensive enough.
Edit: Within the first week I took the car to my mechanic to renew the struts and to inspect its underbody. I had the valve cover gasket renewed for $120. I also renewed the struts, front and back. I didn’t end up with a cheap car, but I did have a good car. I sold the car on 27 March 2024 for $3,500 and recouped all my costs. I am now using another 1993 BG Astina as my daily driver - it was originally purchased as a spare parts car for this car! It’s not as good as this car cosmetically, but it’s extremely reliable and cheap to own.

I have the sedan with the same mechanicals as yours and we've had it since new (1990). It's done 303 K with no major repairs. Along with the first 323 ('77) and the first front drive 323 ('80) yours is in my view the
best of the 323 series. I've also owned a '90 SP which was not as good as the basic SOHC (yours). Your front end may have been replaced as in mid '91 Mazda removed the Mazda badge from the grill (a mistake in my view) and went logo only but I see yours has both. Hang on to your car. Fully imported Japanese cars of that era were brilliant. The Pulsar released in '91 were also great. Any questions feel free to ask.

Congrats! That’s an early one … did you find an auto or manual? I was surprised how well they drive. Not a sports car, but a fun drive.

We owned a 323 16 valves one in 1992 in France. Brand new full options for 12000 a dark grey color we drove all over the place.
We did just the basic maintenance but after 7 years the head gasket blew up she was 310000 miles 😢.
If we took care of it she would've run longer our fault 🤷

Thanks for the comment. You still did well to get it close to half a million kilometres. They’re good little cars.

Nice! Like your channel and the cars. Well you make a second video for this car with the repairs? Do you plan on keeping it selling?

G'day. I will keep it for a good while as it doesn't really owe me much and it's a fun thing to drive. I don't have undercover parking for it unfortunately, so i'll have to see how it stands up to the weather. I don't have enough footage for a second video. I'm taking it for a drive to Bathurst next month, so maybe I can put something together then. Cheers for watching.

Looking to get this car but barely anyone talks about it/sells it. Therefore, have you ever had to get parts for it and if so, how hard was it to find parts for it?

    • @DPOSFS
      @DPOSFS  Рік тому

Hi. Are you in Australia? Apparently there’s no common body panels/glass with the sedan of the same model, so you’ll have a smaller pool of spare parts cars from which to choose. The one part I find really hard to find is the A pillar exterior trim. They break and they don’t sell new ones. I need at least two. There’s a couple of people overseas who make “backyard made” replacements. I bought a donor parts car last week but it’s much too good to part out so now I have two Astinas. I agree, they are getting rarer on the roads and rarer for parts, although mechanically I think parts are easy enough to source. Good luck.

Managed to get a 1993 SOHC one in auto 3 days ago. Has only 150 kms and 2 owners max, completely stock and 90% unmarked. All the oils and fluids (brakes, engine, transmission and power steering) need to be changed and replaced. Sparks and leads were recently replaced by me a day ago. It's an absolute dream to drive and own, however, I've had a really bad time trying to figure out the engine number/model name. Did you ever figure out what yours is? If so how? Anyways, thanks for the good luck cause it worked. Would love to chat more cause finding anyone that owns and knows this car is an insane rarity, especially for Aus 👍

@@Grooby__ Well done and congrats on your buy. My mechanic couldn’t believe both of my cars are 30 years old. He raved about the comfort and handling after doing the struts, even to say it drives like a new car. I agree! I’ll be selling my green one in about 6-9 months time. Both are great cars, but it doesn’t make sense for me to have two of the same model. I’ll drive the white Astina on full reg until June and then convert it to Historic Rego so I can afford to bring my AU XR8 back on the road. Anyhow, the sticker on the inside of the door (driver’s, I think) has some useful info. Your car would be a BG2 given the date (series 2 BG Astina), and this will appear as a number 2 on the VIN. The owner’s manual should have the engine number listed, and if you don’t have that, the rego papers should have it. I haven’t looked for it stamped on the engine block. If you want to see mine and you’re in Sydney, let me know.
