Thank you Faith! Glad you enjoyed the footage despite the rain! Thankfully, the rain stopped when the trains when past; I only got soaked in between! Cheers, Paul
We enjoy Railway videos. The barriers in the UK intrigue us. They close off the railway track when no trains are due and are used as barriers when the train passes on a crossing. Brilliant. So different to our sin the Netherlands. Interesting background history. Enjoyable to watch and informative. 👍🇳🇿🙋♀🇳🇱
Thank you - glad you like one of my Railway Series videos. Yes, I have always been fascinated by level crossings. Most on the mainlines are automatic, however there are a few examples of manual crossings still on the main network - perhaps I should seek out a couple - one isn't far from where I live. Thanks so much for watching and commenting. Happy New Year to you! Paul
That was really interesting to find out what happens when emergency vehicles need to cross level crossings. Lovely video with some really nice steam train footage! Lots of interesting info! You were so fortunate to get some dry bits of the days to film!
Thanks Louise! Yes, I had often wondered that too. Glad you liked the filmed footage; just a shame the sun was in the wrong place as the train was coming into the station. Still, you can't move the sun! Thankfully, it stopped raining when the trains were going past, but I got soaked waiting in between the trains. I enjoyed it though, and that old mill area looked fascinating. Cheers, Paul.
Another great video Paul. Watched with Dad and thoroughly enjoyed. Have never visited despite our proximity to Dean forest railway. Thanks for showing us. 👍🏻
Thank you Watto! So glad that you and your dad enjoyed it too! It is a terrific place. you can walk alongside the track for quite a way through the forest just north of the main centre at Norchard, near Lydney. So many aspects of this line fascinate me. Thanks again, take care, Paul.
This was an amazing area, Paul! I really enjoyed hearing how they manage emergency vehicles. Seeing the old canal and that bridge was beautiful. Glad to hear we will see some more!
It is well worth visiting Michael if you are ever near the Forest of Dean. Easy to get to from the M48 (old Severn Bridge) off the M4, or A48 south from Gloucester/M5. Not one of the longer heritage lines, but it passes through stunning wooded scenery. They also run steam and diesel gala days. I will be visiting the main hub on the line on my next visit for a closer look.
Hello Paul - greetings from Poland What a fabulous video! Full of lots of intersting facts and historical information. I always find your vlogs very educational. I always come way learning something new. Brilliant camera work, lovely photogrpahs and excellent commentary. Can't wait for the next visit to this lovely railway. See you again soon. Stay safe please
Thank you Michael! Glad you enjoyed it. Yes, it is a super little line, and fairly close to where I live, so it is quite convenient to make return trips to, and look at different aspects of it. Thanks again, and thanks for supporting my channel. Take care, Paul.
Thanks Paul. As usual I spend more time after watching your video researching stuff new to me. I did not know of Pidcocks canal before you mentioned it. There is a good, and interesting, explanation of it on Wikipeadia. There is so much to learn about in the Forest of Dean. Much of what remains needs interpreting with a keen eye because so much has been removed or covered over by trees.
Thanks John! Yes Pidcocks is definitely one of the lesser known canals of the UK - I think in the Forest it gets overshadowed by the Lydney Canal. I may do another piece to see what else remains of it, but I have a feeling that there will be little, unfortunately. It went right through Lydney, but it is likely to have been infilled there. Thanks for watching and commenting! Cheers, Paul.
I have enjoyed your series on the DFR. About 2008, while in secondary school in Newport, and we were given pins in technology, and they came in a little red box which said they were from ‘Whitecroft, Lydney’. Having been to the DFR throughout my youth, I knew exactly where they were from! It must’ve been towards the end of the factory’s working life. I heard it was planned to be demolished, but maybe those plans have changed with you saying it’s being used for storage.
Thank you! I have just Googled 'Whitecroft Needles' to find out that they are very much still in business! They are now based in Mitchledean, and, although a lot of their habdashery items are now imported, they do still make needles in the Forest for their Heritage range. Good to know! Yes, the original factory is still very much there and appears to be in good condition too. Thanks for watching and commenting. Cheers, Paul.
Hi Paul, I still haven't visited this railway but it is on my to do list for this year, strange how we travel long distances to look at things and ignore what is on our door step. Good filming as always, keep it up. Ron
Yes, I know what you mean Ron! There are loads of interesting things in Gloucestershire - plenty for me to cover just in Gloucester alone. You'll just love the Dean Forest Railway Ron. Take care, Paul.
Hi Paul, Very enjoyable video. Thankyou for getting wet on our behalf😉😉. The rain certainly gave a fresh look to your photography!! You know, looking at the video a second or third time, at 6:50, there wasn't much time between the gates being closed and the train running through😬😬 Always amazes me the amount of lines and industry in the Forest of Dean. I never understood why the steam engine workshop at the Flour Mills was unconnected to the main line, I certainly do now. I wonder if you will bump into one of the Ron's on your follow-up trips. Look forward to the next episode. Good luck from Spain!!
Ah, yes, the gap between the gates closing and the train! That would be down to a little judicious editing on my part - although, even then, there wasn't that much of a time gap. However, it is safe, because the train driver only proceeds if the gate keeper has waived his green flag. Glad you enjoyed it! Yes, the rain gives it a lovely sheen, doesn't it? Take care, Paul.
Thank you for persevering through some pretty poor weather, great history & footage.
Thank you Faith! Glad you enjoyed the footage despite the rain! Thankfully, the rain stopped when the trains when past; I only got soaked in between! Cheers, Paul

Lovely train and the history behind!

Goods news, the DFR are returning to stopping all passenger trains in both directions at Whitecroft and Lydney Town in 2023!
That's great to hear! I will be back on the DFR to film there again soon. Cheers, Paul 🙂👍🚂
