These sales and increases are just insane. Buy books because you enjoy the books, not as an investment. A book's teal value is in the content. My comic book collection will always be valuable to me, regardless of the market.

Wolverine #1 is 33 years old, is a key for arguably the 2nd most popular Marvel character (behind Spidey), and the other keys like 180, 181, 182, and limited #1 were spiking, so people wanted to get in with this. I haven't spent money on this book since 1996, but that's my thought as to why the prices you listed.

I made peace along time ago once I saw that it be nigh on impossible to get certain books let alone 9.8s at the prices people ask for.
It’s why I always tell friends and people who ask about getting into the collecting of comics “ if you can get an 4.0 or even a 9.0 on certain key issues that are 40 years old or more, and didn’t go bankrupt doing it…… be happy” it’s in “your collection”

Jumped on the SIKTC train. With it being optioned for a netflix show, Tynion's track record, plus low print run for a modern I understand the price in this market. In a recent newsletter, Tynion said SIKTC is not close to halfway done. So if the comic can maintain its quality and the show does well the prices are comparable to the Walking Dead prices. Lots of ifs early on though.

That is why I WILL NOT collect graded books. That’s the biggest scam and now problem that comic book collectors have EVER had to deal with in the history of the hobby! That’s made some collectors look down on NEAR MINT CONDITION BOOKS! That “eww it’s a 9.6 not a 9.8” attitude didn’t come around until about ‘07 or so and ever since then, it’s been CRAZY and AWFUL for collectors who are looking for back issues, especially keys! No one can tell me that they can tell the difference between a 9.4 and a 9.8 with their naked eye and the fact that CGC made a big difference between them and made it like the standard, prices have just had extra hundreds of dollars tacked onto them FOR NO REASON WHATSOEVER! I tell the story about how just recently a person paid 200 bucks plus for a GI JOE 32 that was 9.8. Years ago no one even knew ANYTHING ABOUT gi Joe 32 let alone pay 200 bucks for it! It’s Zartans first appearance and only in the last few months has that book even gotten recognition, let alone sales, but right out the gate people are dropping 200 bucks for a book that is not a proven commodity nor will this book retain or even see that kind of price again! Still, there’s fools out here who will do whatever comic Tom tells them to do by watching his “hot” list and the market is being artificially driven but deconstructed slowly and when that bubble bursts, the resultant fallout is gonna be bad! People are not going to keep buying and the people who purchased these books are going to be mad that they are now stuck with a 30 dollar book that you went and paid 500 bucks for a year or so back. I just keep collecting “raw” books and even then I don’t like the prices that some people have attached to them either thanks to this CGC stuff ruining the marketplace.

@@MintHunterComics Yeah, and it might just be my luck, but 3-4 CGC 9.6's that cost/are worth the same at purchase time as 1 CGC 9.8 often become later more valuable than the single CGC 9.8.
So, if you buy 3-4 CGC 9.6 and sell these when that CGC 9.8 is at it's peak, you'll get more money back, _often_
The money you put in 3-4 CGC 9.6's comes back in a greater value than the one CGC 9.8 at the same cost.
If you pay $1,000 for 4+ CGC 9.6 and $1,000 for 1 CGC 9.8, when the CGC 9.8 is worth $10,000, the 4+ CGC 9.6 are worth $12,000, and often the CGC 9.8 would be cheaper than the sum used here, so then the CGC 9.6's would be worth more.
And even this: if the same amount of money spent on _multiple_ CGC 9.6's become worth more than the same amount spent on 1 CGC 9.8 when that CGC 9.8 is at it's peak. There's many ways to say the same thing, I'm just making sure all who read this understand why I am claiming/experience monthly.
It's all about logistics and how large a warehouse you have to store these future moneymakers.
This isn't(it can't be?) set in stone, but it has worked for me last 5 years when I realized this. I save those CGC 9.6 to sell later, but it does take time for their value to increase. If it's a modern book(I mean from 2000-2021), everything below a CGC 9.6 is "trash to me".

    • @ludotoyhunter8492
      @ludotoyhunter8492 3 роки тому +8

Don’t let this grading crap fool you! It’s a racket and a way to bilk extra money out of people. Stop falling for the okey doke. In “raw” condition no one can tell a 9.6 from a 9.8 and it has gotten so bad that collectors (like you guys apparently) LOOK DOWN ON NEAR MINT CONDITION BOOKS! What kinda nonsense is that? A .2 in either direction is not enough to make me wanna give you extra hundreds of thousands of dollars more. That’s just dumb. CGC has TOTALLY RUINED the hobby as a whole. Period. They made it up (grading that is) for sports cards and then people got hip and then greedy (as is par for the course, greed always destroys anything that brings in money no matter WHAT it is!) and just started grading everything: coins, stamps, toys, video games (which is ANOTHER area in which they just went TOTALLY DAMN INSANE with and prices on some of those games are tens of thousands of dollars just because it’s “graded”. WTF are you grading on a video game that’s in the box and shrink wrapped? You don’t know if the game is broken or missing instructions or whatever because you can’t even open the damn box! Total scam!) and it just became an over used passé thing and it has made people more like stock brokers than comic collectors. There are SO MANY assholes who buy graded books only and don’t know ANYTHING ABOUT COMICS except that they are worth money. That’s what has killed our hobby. The people who aren’t doing both, enjoying their books and selling when they are ready, but it’s these people who need the “blue chip” books (and that’s proof that they are outsiders to comics because in all my years of collecting, I never ever heard “blue chip books” until grading came on the scene and brought these outsiders into the realm of comics) and pay astronomical prices as well as charge astronomical prices for their graded books. It’s the “too much money and nothing to do” crowd that has fostered this environment and made nonsense of the back issue market. I just saw the first appearance of the dinobots (transformers #8) going for 350 bucks! What? Since when does this (a perennial dollar book if I ever saw one) book command the same price as a first appearance of Harley Quinn or Deadpool? Do you see JUST HOW RIDICULOUS the market has become? People are paying more for this book, more for the first appearance of dinobots than they are for the first lobo and gunslinger spawn. That’s a backwards market and it’s because the die hard collectors who love comics and will still be here after this idiotic bubble bursts, are priced out of the books they want or have been aspiring to get because greedy people who are using these books as stocks basically have pumped prices up to high using artificial means. That’s a problem and grading caused this WHOLE situation. When grading was newer and in its first five or ten years, it was for older books that you wanted to preserve and collectors sent in their key back issues to get them slabbed. There was a time that you could NOT send modern stuff to them whenever you wanted and they set a certain time aside to grade newer books as older ones took preference over new books. Now people send in any damn thing and they are just slab crazy and that has totally put collecting on life support. Unless you have extra thousands to spend on comics, you can’t get a good three or four key back issues at a convention anymore. That’s a damn shame. We now have collectors thinking that anything under 9.8 is unworthy somehow and there’s people who call 9.0 and 9.2 books “mid grade”. That’s unbelievable and that’s exclusive to NOW. That didn’t happen in 1993, 96, 2001, 2007, 2013, 2015, however in the last 6 years or less the shift in perspective has made collectors not only unreasonable but highly unrealistic. Most comics don’t live in the 9-10 point range yet that’s all collectors want. You have 90 percent of collectors going after the top 5 percent of books. If this continues, comic books will just collapse in upon themselves and destroy the hobby permanently.

@@ludotoyhunter8492 , I completely agree. I will also add I saw the collapse of the comic book market in the 90's when everyone was buying 5 to 10 copies of books thinking they were all going to turn into 1st superman or batman values. The print rate was insane. I was an actual reader not so much a collector. But I did take care of my books after I read them, bagged, boarded, and put them in a storage box. I remember some folks trying to sell me books at insane prices since they knew I read comics. And I gave them a resounding "NO". Those books are not worth anything, there's a ton of them out there and they will never be worth anything. I had to give it up as life got in the way...I still have comics I never even opened (subscription service with Mile High Comics) as far as ten years back at the very least.

Same goes for key/non key books, graded, VS their signed counterparts?

One I think is justified is Star Wars Clone Wars #1, the first appearance of Ahsoka Tano. CGC 9.8 in Oct 2019 went for $250 but is now FMV of $2525 with a high sale of $4200 in July, a jump of 1580%. One I don't get is Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic #9 (current FMV of $1077), the first appearance of Revan. CGC 9.8 in May of 2020 was an $85 book but a year later sold for $1799, a 2019% increase??? Both books are from the late 2000's, but Ahsoka was in the hugely successful and immensely popular Clone Wars animated series, then the well done Rebel series and is now in the live action Mandalorian with her own series coming next year. Revan is a barely canon character from a video game. And don't forget to look at the rare variant for Clone Wars #1. $370 to $16,000 for a 4224% increase. Not sure who bought that 16K book. Yikes. Ahsoka isn't going to lose her popularity any time soon and eventually show up in a live action movie someday so I am on the hunt for some lower grade copies of the Cover A Clone Wars #1 as the 9.8's are out of my league.

Right now I'm looking at books that aren't popular right now that I like, and honestly just buying what like in general 👍🏼 I feel that lower grades of books can be the best of both worlds, you're still getting the book, maybe in not the greatest shape, but if you like the book, it's in your collection, who cares? And if it goes up it should be proportional to its value 👍🏼

This particular book is the 1st issue in his first ongoing series similar to what Punisher's first ongoing series is doing now. You can compare that to the book you said was somewhat justified which was Vengeance 1. That has the first appearance of a character that barely anyone knows and was mostly rejected when her book came out. That book goes for over 1k.

If you want to get a 9.6 or lower, they can be had for around $200. Keep in mind, this book is 26 years older, a lot rarer, AND it's actually cheaper. If they're going to do anything with Elsa, they'll pretty much have to use Ulysses eventually, since it all started with him. I hoard that book(Marvel Presents 1 1975) whenever I see it in the wild.

Young Avengers has had a ton of exposure since the spring, as most of the core Young Avengers characters were introduced in the different Marvel TV shows that have premiered this year. Add to that the speculation and almost certain likelihood of Disney sowing the seeds for a Young Avengers series, and the price jump makes sense. Unlike Spider-Girl, Young Avengers actually has something of substance driving the prices up. YA 1 has the potential to continually grow, and grow a lot. I'm with James in that YA 1 could be a huge book some years from now.
