    Riding your motorcycle at dusk or dawn can create more hazards. It is not only about your motorcycle riding skills, but it is also how the environment presents itself. High traffic motorcycle riding is different than riding out in the boonies, treat it that way.

      @@DanDanTheFireman Another issue you may have, esp here in SD California where I commute, are angry impatient drivers who think it's ok to pass you/lane filter in your lane. A couple days ago I had a driver who apparently likes to tailgate & when I maintained my space cushion, she became angry and passed me on my left, in my lane. I was riding in the #1 lane (far left) in the #3 position in my lane and of course this was in the middle of peak rush hour traffic (7:30AM) on Hwy 94 freeway. This isn't the 1st time this has happened either. Being in California, there are too many impatient & careless drivers on the roads. Anyway, just my 2 cents.

And rush-hour highways , parkways and expressways are just as bad. These folks will kill you if you let them. Then run. Great job on the teaching Dan. And if Im already stopped and there is a vehicle approaching behind then I flick my brake lights until Im confident Ive been acknowledged. Just a quick little 1,2,3. Sometimes 123,123,123,123! Lol. Thanks. I never thought to consider that while I'm sitting waiting at a junction or intersection, staring at a cool car, the other drivers all around me are probably doing the same thing (being distracted). Also never thought to use sitting right next to cars as a type of safety cushion. I do always say "blindspot blindspot blindspot" when I'm sitting in a car's blindspot in my next lane. These ride along videos are so helpful.

    Heya Dan, good vid on a ride-a-long with threat assessment. You've made some good points in here. I have finally made my bike purchase and have been on the road for about four days now since monday. And one thing I noticed while driving in heavy traffic was a situation that came up and was similar to some of the stuff you talk about. Now before I write about that I'd like to say that one of the first rules that I employ on the road regardless of riding or driving is to give permission to other drivers to do whatever silly thing it is that they want to do. Even if that thing isn't in my best interests, or if it may be dangerous for me. This allows me to keep calm on the road. Because I can't get made at someone for doing a thing I just granted them permission to do.
    Moving on, as I was approaching a red light, again in relatively heavy traffic, I noticed that where I was stopping was next to a left hand turn lane. And I was just at the first available entry point for this lane as the median blocked access up to that point. As a professional driver I've noticed on multiple occasions car drivers get frustrated if the vehicle in front of them hasn't given them enough room to enter this lane either due to leaving a space cushion, or due to their lane position. So what I chose to do was to swerve over the lane position 3 to give the car behind me room to maneuver around me and into the left turn lane if they so choose. While the vehicle behind me wasn't interested in turning at that particular intersection it seems to me that by making that lane position change that I cut off a potential source of frustration for the driver of a vehicle that is a few thousand pounds heavier than the 270 pounds that my bike weighs in.
    I'd like to also add this helpful tip on how we can better assess our frame of mind while we are riding. If you find yourself saying something akin to "No! Don't do it" to the other road occupants more than perhaps once or twice in an hour, then perhaps it's a good idea to take some time off the bike to get our heads right. For me, I take it as a warning that I'm starting to get a little grumpy. And for me that can be indication that a migraine is starting up. So it's a good idea for me to be off the road for a while if that does start to happen. However for everyone out there it's never a good idea to ride while angry, or even just a little grumpy. It's at times like this that we start to make bad decisions. We start to ride more aggressively. Here in California it is neither legal or illegal for bike to lane filter(lane splitting). But when we ride mad, it is much more likely that not only will we lane filter, but that we will do so far too aggressively for it to be done safely.
    Anyways, thanks for the videos DDFM. I always enjoy watching and hearing what you have to say on this topic. Ciao for now, and I hope your days treats you well.

    One habit I have gotten into is flashing my brake light when decelerating (rolling off the throttle)- just a couple taps on the front brake lever, not enough to actually brake, but enough to light the brake light to let cars following me that I am slowing down.

    I think you leave too much gap in front of you, folks will be tempted to jump in there and put hazard on you- remember tail end Charlie! Tighten it up so you are perceived as part of that traffic group you are following - my take :)

    • @DanDanTheFireman
      @DanDanTheFireman  4 роки тому +9

      That's definitely one way of doing it. I choose to keep that Gap so I have room. If somebody decides to get between me and the car that I'm following then I just keep increasing my Gap. To me it's always easier to add more space. When you are in a group ride though it is best to keep it tight for that reason.

    Your position when leaving the parking lot was perfect. You shouldn't go more to the right, like you indicated "you could also do". That way you would invite cars to take position on your left, blocking your vision. It's always best to take up as much space as possible in those situations so no one can block your line of sight.

Ive been driving a semi for 13 years, zero accidents. 98% of accidents are preventable. Most motorcycle accidents are caused by the motorcycle rider, or were 100% preventable.

    Really glad to hear you mention using cars for visibility in specific situations. My commute has an uphill gradual left turn and there's a road coming in from the right, right at the apex of the turn. Those people can't see cars coming from their left, much less a bike. They have to nose out to see anything. It's the only place I regularly get as close to the car in front of me as I can. Because I know if the car coming into my road from the right sees that car in front of me, they have a better chance of seeing me right behind than if I'm 2 seconds or more behind. They definitely won't see me back there.

    I'm fairly new to your channel, but I love how you talk through all this stuff because it's the same stuff I tell myself when I'm riding. Is that guy going to pull out, does he see me, if he pulls out where do I go, etc. Very cool to see a video of you saying what I think when riding. I do tend to tuck up to some vehicles for protection through traffic like that thinking if they don't see me it's ok, they won't turn into that truck or whatever I've tucked up behind or next to. Obviously you have to be super careful, know how to stop and know when to stop faster than the vehicle you've tucked up to. If you can't see beyond the vehicle, don't tuck up to it, but I do try to use vehicles as shields sometimes, as the conditions dictate. Also, Tucson traffic is child's play compared to Seattle/Bellevue (WA) traffic, the major difference being the size and complication of your intersections.

      Infantlight Gaming - Well, consider this. I live in Rhode Island, the smallest state, located in the northeast surrounded by Massachusetts and Connecticut. In Rhode Island, you are required to pass the Motorcycle Safety Course in order to get a permit, then, after 30 days, you can get the motorcycle license. However, there’s no helmet requirement. On the other hand, Massachusetts requires a helmet, but you can get the motorcycle license at any point, as long as you have a car license.

      Lane splitting. or filtering here in UK. Is a must one thing you don't want on a motorcycle is being crushed whilst sitting in traffic. Also a few bikers make the mistake of sitting behind a van or lorrie< not sure what you call these over the pond but anyway sitting out of site of there mirrors

    • @trapdoorspider9211
      @trapdoorspider9211 4 роки тому

      @@kidmosey to be fair dude you do see some bikers filtering or lane splitting to swift or stupid swift. but with that said you may see a biker passing close but he knows exactly how wide his bike is. But we don't like cars ect passing close for good reason as you see to meny missjudge the width of there car ect this is getting more often in the uk and seems to be increasing. I don't ride on strong windy days as I've been blown into incoming traffic a small gust doesn't effect a bigger bike much at all. I wouldn't recommend riding a 125 or 250 in strong winds ive been riding down a bypass on a 125 in strong winds leaning left into the wind same road i got blown into incoming traffic i managed to get out of it just it required weight transfer on the left foot peg and through the handle bars effectively like you was taking a swift left hand turn to overcome the centrifugal force plus a strong side wind

    Re: being tardy. When I was teaching my sons to drive, I gave them each a tiny troll figure, the ugliest ones I could find. I mounted them on the dashboard and told them “Your troll has a name, ICKY. ICKY stands for Impatience Can Kill You. Remember that there is no appointment or rendezvous that is worth your life to keep. Better to arrive late and safe than rush and be dead.”
    See you on the road and keep up the great work!

    Very good.. Your mind needs to constantly be scanning for danger. One thing you didn't mention is you want to be constantly aware of who is in YOUR blind spot and don't allow that, so that if you need to make fast maneuver, you are not going to crash into someone next to you.
    In addition you should practice emergency braking and evasive counter steering in a safe parking lot to keep your skills sharp.

    "present myself" I like that. Been using it self-taught for year, but never called it that. I have whitish LED low on my forks and the typical yellowish stock headlights. I think the contrasting colors help me be seen. Given my low lights mounted to the forks, I'm able to "present myself' by merely twitching the bars when I think there's an oncoming left-turner that might not see me. I like your vids. Good affirmation of things I do while riding.
