Folks, my wife and I sat front row center for this B'way show with Bernadette Peters. She sang the entire song with tears streaming down her face. It was the same for me. It was historic, I don't think I have ever seen anything better. While Catherine Zeta-Jones was in the role the first 6 months I had no interest in going. When Bernadette took over the role I booked tickets on-line immediately and we drove almost 10 hours to NYC to see it. I will never, ever forget it.
Without question, one of the most moving performances I’ve ever had the privilege to see. A single house seat and I sobbed and sobbed. She was hilarious and heartbreaking. This was a PRIVILEGE to see.
Her interpretation is so perfect. Vulnerable, self-aware, shattering. Just imagine the person you’d decided to finally open your heart to telling you he’s choosing someone else. She nails this.
Oh my lord, I had no idea this video existed. I just started watching it and realized Bernadette Peters just gave the best performance of this role ever.
Her performance in this show is possibly the greatest, most masterful musical theater performance I have ever seen on the Broadway stage. And I have seen so many great ones.
Agreed! I am auditioning for a role in my college on September 9th. Bernadette Peters has helped me understand the meaning of the song, and I cried listening to her.
NY Times: "For theater lovers there can be no greater pleasure than to witness Bernadette Peters perform the show's signature number with an emotional transparency and musical delicacy that turns this song into an occasion of transporting artistry...[it's] an indelible moment in the history of musical theater." After reading this, I went twice, including the last show of the run with Bernadette...pure magic, and SS came out at the end of the show to say hi. If only there was a cast recording with her on it.
I passed on suffering through seeing Katherine Zeta Jones doing this part because I knew she couldn't handle it. I was sad because like most I'd never seen the show, most certainly on Broadway. When they reopened with Bernadette and Elaine Stritch (RIP) oh my God was I psyched! And what an AMAZING show and what AMAZING performances by BOTH ladies. Bernadette's "Send in the Clowns" had eyes tearing in the audience and you could hear a pin drop. She was perfect all around ("Have You Met My Wife" -- hilarious and skillfully done). I'm convinced Bernadette can do anything. Again, SO glad I saw here in this show. Those who got to see it witnessed musical theater history.
Maybe you should have seen Catherine Zeta Jones before judging? I did. I did not love her in the role. Too frosty and she sang this number with too much anger.
I have seen the show twice. Bernadette Peters was Superb. @ Nick. Elaine Stritch was 86yrs old. Does not drink any longer. And did not stumble out of any bar.It was her swan song from Broadway. Having an illustrious career. Bravo to both of these Great Performers.
I saw her performance in this. As a huge Sondheim fan I can say that the entire production was utter perfection. Her performance was mesmerising, and this is the proof. So heart wrenching and beautiful. Thank you so much for posting this, I just relived my entire experience with this production and am very overwhelmed!
This production was the worst revival I have ever seen. The sets were tacky, the costumes more fit for an Italian funeral and the tinny band was not worthy of this glorious score. The supporting cast was uniformly awful.

VINCE RAMDHANIE it’s a song of heartbreak. Desiree and Fredrick have been on and off lovers for decades, even having a daughter together (which he knows not of). In this scene Fredrick tells Desiree they cannot be together and this is her response. “Send in the Clowns” is her way of trying to lighten up the mood, saying with such travesty, there should be clowns there relieve everyone of the tension. In a way, it’s a song about the death of the possibility for their love to flourish and last.
To Nick Mayor: it is becoming boring to listen to someone say "Ms. Peters is/was miscast" because that is what they ALWAYS say and yet, she always smacks it out of the park. She is her own type, and that confuses the lesser minds who need performances to be cookie cut-outs of past efforts. Very sad. You missed a wonderful performance because you were too stupid to enjoy perfection.
Glynis johns is the best version, but this is a close second. Bernadette peters was great. I would have ended the show after her rendition of this song, instead of the neat wrap up.
With mega-wattage like Catherine Zeta-Jones and Angela Lansbury, this production struggled at the box office for one simple reason....despite their efforts, this production was an utterly horrid mess. Apart from an utterly talentless supporting cast, the production values were 4th rate summer stock. Ms. Peters was miscast, not sophisticated enough for this role and Stritch seemed like she stumbled out of a bar. Worst of all, the tinny mini orchestra did not do this sumptuous show justice.

+glenn212now , oh dear me, no. I sat in the second row in 1973. No one will ever top Glynis Johns.
there is room in the world for many different desiree armfeldts.

I was in the audience that evening. It was unforgettable.
If she had opened this show, Bernadette would've taken home the Tony for sure.
Catherine and Angela were wonderful; it was the overall production that sucked.
absoftitanium uh yes.
Her and Elaine
@@steveb1164 not every actor's success needs to be judged by his/her work in film. Bernadette has one of the best runs in the musical theater.

Same here! I believe the Times referred to the reopening with Peters and Stritch as "sending in the A Team."

I have loved Bernadette Peters and respected her since I was a little girl. Her voice is bliss.
She really "gets" the song! She's wonderful as always! Thanks for posting!
IMO Bernadette gave the best ever performance of this Sondheim Classic!
Best version I've come across. She acts and sings it in perfect balance. Most versions favor one or the other.

I ALWAYS love seeing her perform...
She’s one of the best😊
Damn shame there was no cast recording. Moreso with the recent news of Elaine Stritch's passing.
This woman is fantastic, fantastic song, Grammy recommended.
One of the most talented humans ever, and hardly anyone even knows who she is.
Beautiful ❤ ❤❤
Legend!!!
Those three dislikers are the clowns in this video because ur crazy not liking the queen of broadway bernadette peters!
it is really cool to see real talent
Saw this cast on Broadway. This is a good song for her voice and range.
Thanks,
I've watched this a few times now - its better every time. I saw her in it and I'm so glad someone got this down on video.
I miss this show so much.
i loved this so much..so glad i got to see it live
Breath taking,,,,
Oh, thank you for this. Amazing.
~she is just beautiful ~
Happy birthday, divina!
Fu-u-u-... wasn't expecting that. Makes life worth living.
I saw this performance and simply wept at this point -
@memmie
Yep. I'll try to post some more soon. :)
Perfection.
Glad I found this. Love her, but her earlier takes on this song were so flat. But, she's nailing it here.

I tried for like 4 times and failed. UA-cam hates me these days lol. :p
This is FAR better than Catherine Zeta-Jones.
Zeta Jones had no warmth.
is this song about dying?i need to know.

Well, from Desiree's perspective there will always be next year, so maybe not really about death.
No, not really. Unless you count the death of a relationship as death itself.

Exactly what I was thinking she knocks it out of the park in everything she does its amazing how talented she is
What a rude comment.
How did Catherine Zeta get a tony award?? Oh yes thats right, MONEY

Compare this against Judy Dench"s performance and you would have to change your mind!!
If Judy Dench had a great voice she would be better than everyone in musical theatre.
Hey that’s the girl from slaves of New York
Bernadette peters was wonderful in this, but she is still second to Glynis johns. Her comedy in “i must meet your wife” was first rate too.
What an arch performance. It had no appeal to me whatsoever. :(
