Nice Review Anthony. As a fan of Katy, you nailed everything on the head. when I listened to it, the album to me is a bit more forgettable than Prism and Teenage Dreams, and while there's some moments here where it's decent (like Daisies and What Makes a Woman) overall it feels to me bland.
It really doesn’t help that almost half of the album was released as singles, whilst also being her shortest album. I tried to like it but it’s unfortunately forgettable.
No Name Is A Name gotta disagree with you there champ, nothing about the OP comment screams “this is a joke” to me and it looks like other people feel the same way. good attempt at a smart ass comment though, i’m sure you’ll get em next time.
it's so sad, as a former Katy Perry's fan, to realize how realize how irrecoverable her career is at this point... It's kinda similar to what happened with Britney Spears, only ... worse? And I don't know if the diagnosis for Katy is "oh... stay a few more years without composing and singing, maybe it will get better", because she >already< did that and it sounds generic as her last album. Maybe the diagnosis is "man... it's better to stop now, you know, before it gets VERY bad". I don't know, her music is sounding more and more saturated, more and more tired... jeeeeeeez....
Never Really Over could have charted way higher if she went around promoting the song, she didn’t give one performance during its release and the attention came purely from radio. And then maybe she could have gotten hype for her other singles but what would have helped this era even more was an album with a clear vision which she didn’t have because Never Really Over and Harleys In Hawaii weren’t meant to be in this album and most of the rest are clearly Witness rejects (or before Never Really Over was released) from both her vocals and her recent music video which must have been filmed before her pregnancy.
1:39, 2:30 - Never Really Over 1:35, 2:58 - Cry About It Later 1:29, 3:33 - Teary Eyes 3:53 - Daisies 4:05 - Resilient 4:17 - Not the End of the World 4:53 - Smile 5:10 - Champagne Problems 5:18 - Tucked 5:34 - Harleys in Hawaii - Only Love 6:00 - What Makes a Woman
Didn’t think I was gonna enjoy it that much, but I honestly really liked the first half. Second half was hit or miss but really enjoyed the experimentation with synth pop
anyway i think the album really stood out, at least for me. the concept is there and it flows really well through songs. well it’s pop so it will be a lil cliche in the production, but it’s still fresh to hear. the lyrics can be too straightforward but hey it’s Katy, “do u ever feel like a plastic bag” is the blueprint. but there’s also a lot better lyrics here, obv u just gonna point out the weakest part. is it her best? i don’t think so. but it’s cohesive. i applaud that.
I think it has to do more with that fact that Smiles production is just bad and that it’s a mediocre album in all aspects. Happy albums do get critical acclaim, just not this one.
Just listen to Dagny. Never Really Over is just her re-doing Love You Like That basically. But Dagny has at least 10 songs better than that one, great fucking pop writer.
Omg i am a huge Katy Perry fan and I loved this album so sad to see you trash it. I don’t really think it’s as sad as you say either, to me it seems like she’s showing how she’s finally come out of that darkness she’s been trapped in for years. She still has problems but is now able to deal with them and I find that completely inspiring if a little tacky. To me when I listened to these songs they almost felt like overpowering with happiness especially on songs like “Smile” “Tucked” and “champagne problems”. I would say this album is not her best but FAR from her worst.
I know the record's called Smile but you didn't have to carve a permanent smile into your face in the most gruesome way possible, Anthony. Although I admire your dedication. 10/10 review.
4/10 come on!!! Smile is not Perry’s best work, but it’s very enjoyable. I expect Cry About It Later and Not The End Of The World to be singles. It’s a 7/10 to me.
IDK about the album as a whole. But cry about it later and never really over are great songs I will be listening too for a while. And I enjoy smile for what it is. I don't know how often I'd come back to the album as a whole though but I think that's okay. A few goods songs to add to her mountain of hits is enough for me.
Never Really Over is also my fav And i love this album It has some of Katy's best songs like -Tucked -Teary Eyes -Cry About it Later And i see i am the only who loves Teary Eyes, just the 2nd chrous drop is so good
Resume: "This is possibly the most forgettable set of tunes and instrumentals she put her name so far. This is Katy Perry's weakest album to date" I agree totally!
she has the voice and vision, but she doesn't know how to execute them. artistically speaking, she's aight. i too have always find myself putting a high standard to her music but I've learned to not expect much from a popstar.
I do understand why so many reviews are saying the album was a little bland and predictable however when witness dropped it seemed as if people also were not pleased with her approach to a more edgy style with more attempts at poetic lyrics. I'm just more annoyed cause it's like y'all are just picking and choosing at this point. I give this album a solid 8/10 really due to the fact that Katy has been so open about her struggles over these few years and how happy she is to be more aware of it and healthier so she just created a work that resembled that. I feel that many artists have not been so honest about how they do crave statistical success when it comes to chart numbers, sales, etc. yet Katy was real about that and now she's like "screw it who cares, this is just for my love of creating music." Smile was refreshing because it felt like everyone was trying to force themselves to converse about money and sex when I was missing more uplifting anthems. Not that there is anything wrong about songs like money and sex but when it's heard in every single song, it gets a little redundant.
I liked the album and the album is like a break from all the big bombastic power ballads that have been banging on our head, yeah we like it but sometimes you need a break from it. Kinda like this year, it’s not perfect but it’s still nice to come back to. 7/10 Tucked was my favorite
Idk. Listening to the lyrics through the lens of an expecting mother, it becomes quite a bit more impactful. Coming of age record/love letter to her unborn baby.
I personally really enjoyed this Album a lot and even tho its by far not Katy's best Album it certainly was better than her previous Album "Witness" and it also still had some absolute great songs on here especially the bangers "Not the End of The World" and "Never Really Over" both of which were incredible songs imo but a majority of the rest of the Record was also pretty decent imo and Overall I really didnt hate this Album I thought it was a fun listen, sure there were a couple bad songs in here im not saying the Album was perfect but I definitely feel like it's a Strong 7 out of 10.
I'm surprised you gave this something higher than a 3/10. This was easily one of the most bland and generic albums I've heard in a while, I got bored and didn't even make it all the way through lol
Eh, at least it's short, and Never Really Over is a massive bop. If you replaced NRO with something more representative of the rest of the album, it'd probably be a 3.
I am a katy fan and even I felt like nothing stuck. She made so many of these to be just songs until she thought of just making it an album. She made some of these songs years ago and recorded visualizers during small talks release. It's not offensive, it's just that nothing sticks
Tails' invention has sent him, Knuckles, Sonic, Shadow and AD to another dimension: Kim Possible's dimension. Now they have to find a way to get back to their dimension but things definitely get weird when Shadow falls in love with Kim Possible. Will Shadow admit that he likes Kim in a romantic way? Find out as Team Sonic teams up with Team Possible.
Sucks to see her career go this bad, every album after Teenage Dream is worse than the last. If anything though at least it's making people appreciate how great and classic that album was for pop.
Jeremy Callahan maybe bc it’s more likely a more popular artist will have their fans making real comments. Since Hip hop/rap is more of Fantanos audiences niche, it’s more likely that they’ll participate in the meme
The new Galimatias album is worth checking out Anthony, it is unarguably one of the smoothest and most intricately produced albums released this year. The producer made Alina Baraz’s career back in 2015, and now he’s making huge moves with the new solo album that has been very highly reviewed so far by a few blogs. Seems like something you would love since you thoroughly enjoyed Daniel Caesar’s 2017 Freudian album
People should understand that Katy didn't set out to really release an album in 2020 but she ended up doing so anyway. And this album was strictly for her and her true Katycats. It had no features and spoke personally to her and whoever resonated with it.
My favorite Katy Perry album to date. This is a masterpiece in my opinion and miles better than all her previous projects, and i mean sonically. This is the most dance pop Katy Perry album have ever dropped, with those epic, house/rave grooves , and EDM synths, clean and punchy productions than ever, as well as the best melodies and vocal had ever combined Katy Perry on an album. I cannot understand why this album is so underrated. I Like the hell out of it, and it is my favorite POP album of the last years since Taylor Swift's - Reputation. I come from early 90's house/rave music background, as well as EDM of the last 10-15 years, and i can't find a better project of today than this one, even that i have tried to find so hard. ''Katy Perry - Smile'' album is a 10/10 for me. P.S.: I totally disagree with this review. Fantano is a hip-hop maniac, and cannot understand electronic dance music at all.
You may not love every album, but it’s very nice of you to frame every single vinyl on the wall. It’s very kind.
Yeah it’s pretty crazy how he gets a vinyl of every album he reviews, in my opinion it would probably be easier for him to put up a green screen in the back, I doubt anyone would notice.

Master of Disguise no offense but that sounds kinda dumb. Just wouldn’t look the same ya know
It's got to be pretty expensive I hope he gets a free copy to do the review with

Whaaat? Harleys in Hawaii is one of her very best songs!!!
Jesus Katy don't you think Brian Wilson has suffered enough?? Why'd you do this??
Pressed
Right down to the lower case *i*
Commento perfecto! Bravo
4/10 come on!!! Smile is not Perry’s best work, but it’s very enjoyable. I expect Cry About It Later and Not The End Of The World to be singles. It’s a 7/10 to me.
Day 14 of asking fantano to review the cats soundtrack
"Club Future Nostalgia" review next PLEASE
I'll give her credit, that is one of the better album covers I've seen from a mainstream pop artist in a long time.
IDK about the album as a whole. But cry about it later and never really over are great songs I will be listening too for a while. And I enjoy smile for what it is. I don't know how often I'd come back to the album as a whole though but I think that's okay. A few goods songs to add to her mountain of hits is enough for me.
that's why it's a four though, a few hits doesn't make a great album
WITNESS WAS AMAZING SMILE SUCKS
“Katy Perry more like Katy Dairy” I thought you were vegan Anthony

Never Really Over is also my fav
And i love this album
It has some of Katy's best songs like
-Tucked
-Teary Eyes
-Cry About it Later
And i see i am the only who loves Teary Eyes, just the 2nd chrous drop is so good
*Anthony, you should smile more so we can see the best teeth in the game.*
Anderson .Paak doesn't like this comment
The Beach Boys did it better
Facts
Yo bro i made this cool track with my one friend and i think u might enjoy it :) 🌼🥀🍁🌛🌸🌜🌍🔥💥
she even ripped off the sylization of the title on the cover. little i
And that album took decades to come out
Katy Perry is music for babies.
Resume: "This is possibly the most forgettable set of tunes and instrumentals she put her name so far. This is Katy Perry's weakest album to date" I agree totally!
*Summary : )
I always have such high hopes for her, but she always gets bogged down in simplicity.
It really be like that. I like her voice and a lot of her songs seem like they would be great but something is lacking or one or two segments kill it.
she has the voice and vision, but she doesn't know how to execute them. artistically speaking, she's aight. i too have always find myself putting a high standard to her music but I've learned to not expect much from a popstar.
I was excited and everything and TBH this album Ehhhh my least favorite
Well Prism shows her real talent and some songs are pretty good , By the Grace of God is amazing
“Smile” I don’t think I will
me neither after seeing your pp, gtfo my dreams
What is this? A Jessica Jones episode?
Garrick Groover I don’t think it isnt
He finna give Jaden’s new album a NOT GOOD.
He deserves a NOT GOOD for "If you don’t call me, I’ll jump off the roof
".
Fucking yikes.
ong
It's probably just gonna get a YUNOreview
Myki McCoy WHATS he gunna do to poor Rich Brian
@@splqp4996 nah, it's just a lyrics. and the album is framed to be from his younger mindset.
tbh you just don't have the IQ lolol
Neither Good Vibrations nor Surf’s Up are in the FAV TRACKS. Anthony, are you okay?
Didn’t even mention Cabin Essence, or Vega-Tables...sheesh
How can you not like Harleys in Hawaii
Oh, yeah! I love "Smile" by Lily Allen!
...
This ain't that is it
lol
WITNESS WAS AMAZING SMILE SUCKS
andrew carson i loved witness too believe me but this smile hate train is so weird to me
Finally someone said ot
I liked the album and the album is like a break from all the big bombastic power ballads that have been banging on our head, yeah we like it but sometimes you need a break from it. Kinda like this year, it’s not perfect but it’s still nice to come back to. 7/10 Tucked was my favorite
The cover is kinda cool tho
Personally I LOVED the album but It’s nice to see Egg’s opinion
Thx u egg uwu
he didn
aight so is this better than Brian Wilson's or what? whats the deal?
Idk. Listening to the lyrics through the lens of an expecting mother, it becomes quite a bit more impactful. Coming of age record/love letter to her unborn baby.
I didn't even know she was putting out an album
I personally really enjoyed this Album a lot and even tho its by far not Katy's best Album it certainly was better than her previous Album "Witness" and it also still had some absolute great songs on here especially the bangers "Not the End of The World" and "Never Really Over" both of which were incredible songs imo but a majority of the rest of the Record was also pretty decent imo and Overall I really didnt hate this Album I thought it was a fun listen, sure there were a couple bad songs in here im not saying the Album was perfect but I definitely feel like it's a Strong 7 out of 10.
I feel like Anthony has been in a bad mood lately! He needs to open up!
Who isn't in a bad mood in 2020?
Could you review Shabrang by Sevdaliza. It’s so good
YES!!
0:19 I actually really like Witness 😳
SAME MY FAVORITE ALBUM
As a 30 something male, I like Smile a lot more than people think I should.
Two duds in a row, really surprising. After Prism I thought she was going to turn out to be one of the more bankable pop stars of this era.
I agree she has been on a sliding slope for the past few years now with her last two albums .
Witness wasn't a dud. Definitely one of her more unique and better albums
Witness is my favorite album of hers!
Witness is her best album imo
I forgot Katy Perry even existed until the notification for this video popped up
I’m a Katy fan and this was bland and generic as fuck, so forgettable. The most memorable one is the title track and it’s not even all there
Sucks to see her career go this bad, every album after Teenage Dream is worse than the last. If anything though at least it's making people appreciate how great and classic that album was for pop.
dad jeans I think everything after Prism was when her music became banal
Beach Boys cover album ?
Tucked and Cry bout it later are very good
The fact that there are no "great review, anthony" memes in the comments is a miracle. Or maybe I'm too early
well i thought it was a pretty great review Anthony gave us.
it's why i just unsubscribed.
Jeremy Callahan maybe bc it’s more likely a more popular artist will have their fans making real comments. Since Hip hop/rap is more of Fantanos audiences niche, it’s more likely that they’ll participate in the meme
Calling Katy a clown the whole time while mocking her isnt what I was expecting.
Petition for melon to review R.A the rugged man's all my heroes are dead
She put out an album??
Nice review , Consistent good points , decent rate , unsubscribed and reported.
People should understand that Katy didn't set out to really release an album in 2020 but she ended up doing so anyway. And this album was strictly for her and her true Katycats.
It had no features and spoke personally to her and whoever resonated with it.
I literally don’t understand this is my fav album from her
I didn’t even know she dropped a album💀
Somebody should make a compilation of Tony Fantano singing sarcastically if such hasn't come to existence yet.
I.... I really love Katy but smile was very underwhelming
This smile album was so wack I not only did not smile I am now addicted to opioids and have multiple scoliosis
I can relate to this
“scoliosis” i-
RIGHT
yeah, I'm sorry to say, I was hoping for a killer dance album, but it didn't really do it for me
SAME HERE WITNESS WAS AMAZING SMILE SUCKS
I really liked this, took me back to her 2015 style
