      Thanks. I personally think that the original game had a better atmosphere, but I knew that Portal with RTX was more of a tech demo than the definitive version of the game. The only reason I played this instead of the original was because I wanted to try out a virtually fully ray traced game, and I was not disappointed. Also, I only had 20 subscribers when I first uploaded this video. I did not expect my subscriber count to more than quadruple after this video, but I am grateful. I appreciate the support

    Playing Portal RTX was the 4th time (I think) that I played through the game. So even tho I took my time it still only took me like 2h. But I would absolutely say it's worth it. I played the game on an RTX 2070 at 1080p. Obviously my settings were not exactly high, but even tho I was always playing in the 30-50 FPS range, I didnt think it a big deal for this game specifically.
    It certainly looks good enough that I would also recommend it over the original for people who already have the hardware. I wouldn't say it's worth upgrading for, but I do think it is the superior game, and for 1€ on sale, who can complain.
    Btw I had the same crashing issue at the end. IIrc I fixed it by beating Glados again and making a quick save right at the end. Then I loaded that quick save to get the end cut scenes and the credit song (which was what I really cared about).

    i hate to say it but if you're rating portal an 8/10 then youre clearly missing something here. idgaf whether portal rtx is your first time playing it, but i encourage you to take a look at the original as well and try to look out for what it does differently.
    from what ive seen of the ray traced footage as a portal fanatic (haha see the name had this account for 10 years) theres something lost about the design of this game. the original game was isolating, oppresive and sterile. The ray tracing level makes it look too vibrant. the original portal used colour in a better way. for example, most walls in the original are either black or white, with no degree from different lighting. however, due to the ray traced affects this makes light reflect off the wall and makes it look that little bit more colourful.
    apertures's deadpan brutalist design is a key plot point. we're seeing this partially dilaphated laboratory and seemingly empty rooms. its meant to be cold, sterile and unwelcoming. then during the late game in the industrial sections its meant to be a darker more rusty tone. however the dlc completely misses the point by going "LOL CHROME EVERYTHING". the lighting completely ruins this. This bland laboratory feeling makes the final escape sequence feel more poinent. The direction the light is coming from is also half of this problem. the wall lights and more importantly, the offices lights are a lot darker in comparison to ambient / portal light. its little things like this that are important to the plot (the offices are empty but the lights are on? hmm)
    This isn't nostalgia speaking because i think the game is genuninely really pretty to look at, and I think the team has definitely put a lot of work into this. I'm not ashamed to mention I haven't played this, and I have no intention to. I have a 6 y/o graphics card (rx 480) and a midrange HD monitor no intention of upgrading. my laptop has an RTX card but I really cant be asked playing a game that would just seem to frustrate me again. The "remaster" or "reimagining" or whatever they wanna call it just looks like that quake one from a few years back which everyone went crazy for (mainly the q2 one, the q1 manages to keep the aesthetic and actually do really well with it. the lovecraftian horror vibes are kept intact). q2 is meant to be gritty and ugly, like the first one... and like every quake game because its quake. adding shiny to them wont help them at all because nothing is meant to look shiny. metal is meant to rust, glass is meant to be dirty etc. in portal, we see a complex that has been dominated by an ai, and falling slowly into decay.
    like there are things which have obviously been done by the writing and art team to give plot hints to keep people theorising. the rattman dens are subtled shown by lighting which seems to be absent. its just things like that which get on my nerves idk i think im rambling at this point
    tl;dr, i dont really care whether you like it or not, but i HIGHLY encourage you to replay the original. I replayed the original for the first time in ~18 months yesterday and i was still noticing what seems to be obvious design choices that i havent noticed previously (rattman dens etc)

      You might be right. I didn't play the original yet, so I might think the original's atmosphere is good enough to give it a higher score. I would have given portal with RTX a 9/10 (the main reason I thought it had the potential to be 1 score higher than the original is the fact that the graphics of this game infatuated me, and I thought it looked beautiful) if it wasn't for the technical issues I was having. In hindsight, I probably shouldn't have given the original game a score in the first place because I didn't actually play it. When I gave my score, I was basically thinking about what rating I would give Portal with RTX if it didn't have ray tracing. I really don't have any flaws with Portal besides the fact that it's too short. Even though at $1.00 it's basically free, that doesn't mean I will give it a pass. I actually spent $2.00, and most playthroughs from what I could gather were in the 2 hour range. The main reasons I took so long were messing with the settings to get the most playable framerate, admiring the raytraced graphics Portal with RTX provided, and trying to fix technical difficulties. So hypothetically, if I were about as skilled as most people in being able to complete Portal in 2 hours, I only played it once (which I don't usually play games more than once unless I'm trying to 100% it, which I don't often do), and I didn't have any of the reasons it took me so long to play Portal with RTX, I would basically spend $1.00 per hour of this game, which isn't bad, but not anywhere as much as a game like Witcher 3 Game of the Year edition for $10 when it on sale (I actually bought it on sale when it was still $15, but I didn't play it yet because I wanted to complete the Witcher games in order, and with the Witcher 1 Remake announced, I'm probably going to play the remake instead of completing the original). Although this is the case, I don't hold price against it. I usually don't give a game's price being low as an advantage of the game itself even though I use it to try to convince people to buy the game. I only use pricing against a game if I think it's overpriced, which definitely isn't the case with Portal. with Portal 2 being the same price, being more than twice as long, and it looking better, even though I haven't played the game yet, I don't know if I'll find anything to dislike about that game. Portal would be one of my favorite games if it wasn't so short. But the fact that even with my belief that the game is too short, I still gave it an 8 shows how much I love this game. I am usually willing to buy any game I would rate an 8 or higher. Portal is no exception. I enjoyed Portal with RTX, and I think I will like the original too.

      @@artoflegends $1-2 is such a good deal for this, I mean its a short game but theres tons of great mods (portal prelude, still alive bonus levels, rexaura etc) that can extend playtime, as well as stuff like gmod/source assets if youre into that sort of thing, not to mention the bonus maps (which may be worth checking out in terms of portal RTX. ive yet to see any youtubers cover them. In terms of the original release, there was none. it came bundled with the orange box, which would technically make it around $10.
      You really should consider playing portal 2 as well. The community maps keep me going back to it every few weeks as well as the fantastic coop mode. It was the first game I think I ever bought myself XD. isthereanydeal (which everyone should be using) says it goes below a dollar, and its probably lower on some sites like CDKeys if you trust them with your card.
      It's really valid of you to care about pricing, but also you bought an RTX Card. think RTX looks pretty and is a really cool innovation, it just frustrates me that as a ga(y)mer im limited in what I can play due to technology. Portal RTX (as well as Q2 RTX, Morrowind RTX etc) all seem like ploys to me and many others of Nvidea to sell more cards. I think thats what makes the reputation of RTX so shoddy amongst communities. Again, no hate against RTX in graphics of games, more that the technology isnt really cheap enough yet and it saddens me that PC gayming is becoming locked against an extreme paywall as it was in the 00s.
      I think it's really important to play the original versions of games but theres nothing wrong with easing into remakes to get into a game series. also playing games in order can be a bit detrimental to your enjoyment of those games. for example, serious sam 4 and 3 are both prequels, so you play them first in order (something like 4, 3, tfe, tse, 2 is the correct order. the plot (what trippy one there is in those games) is delievered somewhat linearly throughout that timeline(s) but the gameplay naturally progresses throughout the real order of release (new weapons, new enemies, new content added with each release that aims to drive the series forward). I say or this, but I simultaneously refuse to play the original (or at least the enhanced so it can actually run) system shock game. the sequel is top 5 games for me and i need to get round to it!
      tl;dr the order doesnt matter and you shouldnt be expected to follow it. I know very, very few people who played skyrim who've played oblivion, morrowind, daggerfall and arena :/, or halo for that matter (i dont like halo in the first place. i cba to play an original version of it ill just play the remaster)
      Please play portal 2, it completely redefines what you know about everything in the first game and in some ways retcons it! the writing is fantastic and similarly harrowing. you'll see more of that very conscious design choice i was on about with lighting in portal 2 as well. and if youre wanting to play the coop campaign im always down, ive just played it a few times be4 so im probably the worst person to play with

    • @artoflegends
      @artoflegends  Рік тому +1

      @@portalfan0438 You have valid points. I epically don't like how, at least price to performance wise, the RTX 4000 series isn't a substantial upgrade compared to the MSRP of the 3000 series. I needed a new upgrade for my computer anyway, so I though I might as well get an RTX card. I honestly wouldn't hold it against Portal if it was $10. I have Skyrim, and I don't plan on playing the other Elder Scrolls games anytime soon, and I'm playing the Halo Games in release order because of the Master chief collection. I only played Halo Reach first because I wanted to try the first game released on the collection first, and I wanted to get a feel for the series before I started the Master Chief Trilogy (The First 3 numbered Halo Games made by Bungie). Even though it's probably not necessary, I feel like I would have a better understanding of the world and characters if I played the Witcher series in chronological order. If I am ever able to play the complete Metal Gear Solid series on PC, I would rather play the games in release order than chronological order because I heard that the story is better and makes more sense that way. And your probably better at the Co-Op campaign for Portal 2 than me because you actually played some of it before.

  • @SiriusBYT
    @SiriusBYT Рік тому

    Personally, it's NOT worth it.
    Here's my reasoning: first of all I'd like to point out Portal is an absolute master piece and I am NOT hating on the game.
    My first point is that yes, Portal IS cheap and you should totally play it IF and ONLY you ALREADY have an RTX Card, trust me you do not want to play a 2h game (took me 2 hours personally) that's worth a kidney if you factor in the GPU Costs.
    Otherwise the hardware cost is ridiculous: I upgraded also from a 1050 (though TI) to an RTX 3070 and even the 3070 chugs hard at low / medium settings, it's clearly not well optimized in my opinion and here's the thing. (Edit: I have an overclocked Ryzen 5 2600, it's clearly a GPU bottleneck, game ran never above 50 ish FPS at medium settings with DLSS Ultra-Performance, 1440p.)
    Personally just the enhanced assets do fine (or hell, just Source 2 would do it), I do not sincerely think that Ray Tracing really adds to the game, Portal RTX would more benefit if it was in Portal 2 due to its atmosphere which WOULD indeed make it more enjoyable and actually add to the game since it plays a really big role in that one. (I guess, Portal 2 already looks good enough that it doesn't require RTX probably unless you need to turn your PC into a space heater.)
    While Portal RTX is cool, it's not something you should absolutely go try for unless you have stupid amounts of money to waste.
    Ray Traycing in video games are mostly a gimmick.
    It should only stay in a productive workflow like Blender renders.

    • @artoflegends
      @artoflegends  Рік тому +1

      You bring up fair points. I already had a computer with capable hardware, and even though I’m running at minimum settings at 1440p with DLSS Ultra Performance with Enhanced Assets, I still think it looks good. I knew going into it that it would be more of a tech demo than the preferred way to play the original. It definitely does change the atmosphere and make some of the surfaces harder to differentiate between being and not being able to place a portal on the surface. I think that if you don’t already have capable hardware, it’s not worth it to spend $500 or more just to be able to play it. If you were trying to make the true best way to play the original, remaking it in source 2 with the enhanced assets would probably run better and better fit the atmosphere, but that wasn’t the point with this game. Even though the first game doesn’t look bad or anything, it does show its age if you look back on it, and Portal with RTX definitely is a noticeable graphical improvement. Portal 2 provides a better looking experience than the original as far as I know. I know I’m probably in the minority only playing Portal with RTX instead of the original, but I enjoyed my time with it. I probably will play portal 2 in the coming months, and I’m sure I’ll enjoy that game too. I do think Portal with RTX wasn’t that well optimized, but Nvidia probably wanted to show the capabilities of the newest RTX cards like the 4090 and left past series in the dust. I think this remaster is good for what it is, but I can understand how it could be underwhelming for someone who wanted more. In a perfect world, it would be a flawless replacement for the original looking objectively better and still running well while keeping the atmosphere. But at the end of the day, even though this isn’t as good as it could be, I still think it’s a good game that new players and fans of the original can enjoy as long they have capable hardware and are fine with a slightly compromised vision of the original. And the original is still just as available, so this is just an extra version to play if you want to try something different. If this replaced the original, I would probably be more upset, but as an extra/standalone way to play the original, I think you could do a lot worse. And I think that Portal with RTX is a perfectly acceptable way to play the first game.
