I love Attila, vanilla and its mods. It is great, the last greatly moddable TW game and, in my opinion, one of the best historicals out there. There are so many mods (555, rise of islam, 1212, the dawnless days and countless others) that I feel I'll end up playing Attila and only Attila!
I've been playing both this mod and shieldwall (ToB) for years and i've never played anything other than Viking factions and they're both amazing, wish there was more good games set in the viking age.
My perfect Viking Total War game would greatly focus on longships and them allowing your armies to move huge distances over the sea to plunder monasteries and ports, which would perhaps be mini-regions that are easily attacked and looted, all to build up your treasury to launch full-scale invasions into England and France later. The map would also include Iceland, Greenland and Newfoundland.
A little shame that the Byzantines aren’t featured in when the Vikings played very crucial roles. I think there is another Attila mod that does this mod on the campaign map but much wider
I would’ve loved to have the byzantines be playable. Sadly the modders have come out and said that it’s impossible due to the mod files itself, so I think something must’ve gone wrong during development maybe.
Honestly something that Thrones should've done is handicap its factions armies in different ways like in AoC. Every faction in Britannia feels so similar meanwhile in AoC The Danes don't have any cavalry at the same time that the Avars and Lombards are the only factions with access to shock cavalry.
Might sound dumb, but one thing i really hate about age of Charlemagne xpac / mods are the units icons !!! If they were looking like throne it would be sooo much better.
where are my Harry Potter games reviews Andy? I was so hyped for those back when you uploaded the Chamber of Secrets one :( (great content as always btw)
I’m sorry, man, I wish I had more time and that my audience liked HP more, but the first video did awful despite me loving the making of that video. I can’t promise anything, but I’ll try to make another some time in the future. Without enough Patreon supporters it’s hard to justify at the moment, so I hope you bear with me :)
There's already a viking total war called thrones of britannia.....there's 2 viking DLC's for it. The reason it takes place in britain is we know so little about scandinavia during 700-1000ad its not til king harald, sven and others unite norway and sweden that we have evidence recorded writings before then it is just conjecture and saga stories.
@@AndysTake There's a 'DLC submod' faction pack for Age of Vikings from the original modders, which also allows you to play the Kingdom of Wales, Lotharingia and Cordoba. Disable that mod for the regular factions, enable it for those three.
Viking armies (mostly Danish) conquered East Anglia and Northumberland and dismantled Mercia, while in 871AD King Alfred the Great of Wessex became the only king to decisively defeat a Danish army in England. Leaving Wessex, the Danes settled to the north, in an area known as “Danelaw. so even this mod don't show off the Vikings very well considering DaneLaw was established and that ment the Vikings pretty much got what they wanted the useful Farmlands and Dane Laws within England and they allied with Wessex aswell so the fighting by the time this mod is set in pretty much stopped in England once DaneLaw was established.
@@gronndar Attila map has been edited for the LotR mod and Shogun2 as well + for the Total FOTS mod, ETW battle maps have but not campaign nor for NTW sadly .
If time period of this mod is after the Romans established the varangian guards, then not having the Romans would make no sense for viking focused game. In order to fund their ventures westward, the nords first went to constantinople to make money through merchant and mercenary business.
I’m gonna be real. I really despise Attila, but hot damn Age of Charlemagne is one of the greatest DLCs to every be released. If it weren’t for that I probably wouldn’t play Attila.
@@AndysTake poor optimization, more ai cheats, a climate change system that makes migration pointless, cheaper units being replaced and not recruitable (unlike Rome 2), being punished for wiping out a Hun stack, ai (especially the Celts) declaring war on you despite you being an ocean away, the WRE not lasting longer than 10 years (and focusing on fighting the player on the frontier vs defending core territories), immortal faction leaders, a broken family system (how does my child have the “in the family” trait when his parents are from different cultures?), the endless cycle of disease spreading through sanitized regions, OP cavalry charges that will destroy my infantry even though the cavalry was exhausted and the horse were moving slower than a Model-T, Huns spawning INSIDE your territory when playing Slavs, ai immune to famines (making ai migrations rare unless they started the game migrating or of their settlement was razed), a climate change system that also prevents the player from building unique faction buildings due to food cost, importing food = food shortage resulting in a massive income reduction (even though there’s a surplus of global food across the empire) There’s more but that’s all I could think of.
@@cohortConnor that’s a lot glad I barely spent any time in the grand campaign I really only played the saxons and formed a little german military alliance until the Huns came defeated them and then subjugated the smaller germans states it was fun but AoC has been so much better currently playing as Danes trying to raid Spain by 844 like irl
problem with Rome 2 & Attila is building & unit and penalty system. you cant have many buildings which is silly and penalties such as squalors making artificial hardness and unneccesary to the campaign! so i still prefer ToB (and Rome1!) to Attila and Rome2 !
It does, like stated it has missions to create formable nations like Kingdom tier factions, going from Wessex to England or Francia to France for example!
the Viking Age only lasted from 793AD to 1066AD so in terms of games there's not to much stuff they can cover seem the Vikings mostly did Trade and Farm of cause they did battle aswell but the Vikings did not do Battle as much as the history books make out... when the Vikings invaded England that was in 793AD and the target was the monastery at Lindisfarne... but in terms of the Vikings battle history there's not to much to say seem they mostly just wanted farmland so alot of Viking Based Games are more set around farming and building up a Viking Home then combat.. i think Total War really don't show what the Vikings did or even stick to the history of the Vikings..... CA has done a poor job on showing off The Vikings and that was Paid DLC aswell and as for Mods most player Mods don't even get the Vikings correct and just throw alot of BS into it like how the Viking political system works and how some mods give the Vikings really poor land units that are pretty much useless and break as soon as they get into battle... also The Vikings are useless when trying to capture Walled Settlements yet the Mods don't focus on the Raiding and Sacking part of the Vikings or even the slave part.
This looks like an awesome mod, I'll have to play this after I finish another Warhammer 3 campaign or two. I really wanted to like Thrones of Britannia, and did enjoy parts of it, but I could never really get into it. I like the viking age but prefer to play the Irish, Welsh or Scottish because of my ancestry, but I mostly want it to be fun and sadly Thrones is the first and only TW that just wasn't fun for me, despite three attempts to get into it. Atilla is my favorite modern TW and Age of Charlemagne my favorite DLC, so that's even better. I tried Crusader Kings 3 which is fun for a couple of campaigns but a lot of the story plays out like a slapstick meme and it breaks immersion for me.

More use of rivers as well
that would be nice, a good opportunity to reuse the minor, lootable buildings like in shogun 2 they tried to re introduce in thrones

And the Saxons too, now that I think on it.
