I've been on a gondola-ride before. It's a boat experience like none other I've ever witnessed. There's something remarkably relaxing in traveling in a gondola down a silent and calm backstreets of Venice. If you ever go to Venice, I'd highly suggest taking a gondola trip.
Imagine if samples of interesting gondolas had been preserved throughout the centuries, and a museum housed many of them. How amazing. Today you see one gondola, you have seen them all. Even though I have been to Venice a number of times since the 1970s, I never considered boarding a gondola, although it is a pleasure to see them go by, especially in smaller canals with quiet settings. For me there are two secret pleasures of Venice; eating cicchettis (especially grilled baby sepias!), and finding quiet areas where tourists never go. And, Goddess knows there are plenty of them for the adventurous visitor. Il Veneto is one of the magic regions of our planet.
I proposed to my fiancé on a gondola in Venice. Truly special experience. The skill of the gondolier is what impressed me most. There were more than a few times where I said “oh we’re definitely gonna hit that” in my head, only for the gondolier to perfectly place the boat within an inch of what I thought we were going to hit. The only thing we touched the whole time was water.
I went to venice as my graduation gift and I loved going on the gondola and I would happily go back there and if anything it was great exercise given we had to walk everywhere, I think my stamina increased just from it lol
Nice lesson. With all the little bridges across the canals, you'd think they would make all of them high enough for the gondoliers to glide their boats through without bending over. But even some of the most common routes have overpasses forcing the gondoliers to bend over.
welshpete12 It’s called a ferro da pròra and it’s used to protect the gondola from collision and also as a counterweight to the gondolier at the opposite end. The ferro contains six prongs below the “Doges hat” which represents each district of Venice. The hat represents the Rialto Bridge.
Went to uni in Venice for 3 years. Saw one of these squeros, and it looks mighty like the one drawn in the video. btw, gondola rides are expensive as FUCK, so I would steer clear of them if I were you (tourist).
Mrs Richards " I paid for a room with a view !" Basil: (pointing to the lovely view) "That is Torquay, Madam." Mrs Richards: "It's not good enough!" Basil: "May I ask what you were expecting to see out of a Torquay hotel bedroom window? Sydney Opera House, perhaps? the Hanging Gardens of Babylon? Herds of wildebeest sweeping majestically past?..." Mrs Richards: "Don't be silly! I expect to be able to see the sea!" Basil: "You can see the sea, it's over there between the land and the sky." Mrs Richards: "I'm not satisfied. But I shall stay. But I expect a reduction." Basil: "Why?! Because Krakatoa's not erupting at the moment ?
Gondola sounds like a bengali curse word ;) jokes apart, video nicely shows yet another example of a culture being choked by the hands of efficiency...
No when you say "Venice" I don't think about a peaceful city full of waterways. When you say "Venice" I think about the other Italian city states and the beauty of the Italian Renaissace and FUCKING MILAN WHO INVITED THE FUCKING FRENCH TO COME DESTROY THE BEAUTY. Thanks to my European History class, that is what I now think of when I hear "Venice."
Gondolas are nice but it is outrageous to pay around 80-100 EUR an hour. Maybe if you are an all-out tourist but for young visitors you can enjoy a delightful meal for two along the canal for that price. :)
martina14890 Venice is part of Italy now, but for most of it's history it was it's own city state. That is what the video refers to when it said "the most serene republic" and it had it's own language. Although very similar to Italian a lot of words for common things were different (calle instead of via for instance) and most visitors would speak Italian with the locals as they did not understand Venetian. Hope that helps.
That's terrible. Climate change really is a big issue that no one seems to care about. P.S. Rising sea levels take time to cause serious issues. They certainly are rising, but they are rising slowly. I'm sure Venice will be safe for at least a couple more decades.
gondoliers are too greedy and ask a fortune for a ride, only tourist use gondolas, with the exeption of the long canal crossing gondolas which cost just 50c but the ride last 60 seconds
woff woff You went probably in the wrong places, if you eat or breathe like in Piazza San Marco you spend a lot, but I bet you haven't seen the places around the university it's a little cheaper.. You don't see it coming if you don't have the eyes for it! And then, what did you expect from a flood?
+george leal Clearly you've never been to Venice, otherwise you would know that there are no "via" in Venice, but "calli" img2.cedscdn.it/ArchivioNews/20120322_niz2.jpg
the canals are not only roads, but a direct watersource, sewer system, irrigation and fortification. Besides, it's much easier to push a boat, than to turn a medieval carriage in the narrow streets. Hve you ever been there?

Addison Anderson has the best voice of Ted-Ed period.
How do so few people agree?
I agree
its kind of gift from his birth. we should appreciate other voices
“Apparently Venetian authorities did not believe in pimping up their rides” oh my when he said that I was dying
yes me too

I visited Venice a year ago. I have not seen a city more beatiful tahab Venice.

Venetian Coast Customs: Pimp my Gondola.
I would view it as artistic expression. Have you ever seen a truck in South Asia.

It's a pity that this beautiful job is risking to disappear...
No risk. Who wouldn't want to ride a gondola?
No wonder they disappear when you have to pay 80 € per person for just one ride!
It will disappear if nobody wants to build a gondola...
MEgix New Gondolas are always built.
damn this video made me feel like going to Venice.
I went to venice as my graduation gift and I loved going on the gondola and I would happily go back there and if anything it was great exercise given we had to walk everywhere, I think my stamina increased just from it lol
It looks kind of like the Viking longships, so maybe gondolas were also designed to go as easily forwards as backwards in those narrow canals?
I love these kinds of videos having played games like Eu4 :D
Genoa wants to know your location
i never been on gondola before bu its good way to learn

Thank you
This video is just amazing, and I hope this channel will have other interesting things;)
cool!
the animation is such a genius
You could say that in 1500s Venice there was... gondoluber.... hehe
***** no thanks I hired my gondoluber already to row me out
***** what was physically painful was when a thief was in the canals and he pretended to be my gondoluber driver but then mugged me
***** I can't stop
just like my gondoluber driver when he's on a fast street
***** yeah, I couldn't take it anymore when my gondoluber driver kept bringing me to the wrong canal!
Can any one tell me the history of the feather like thing on the bow of a gondola ?

Yall we can all truthfully say now that we heard the Ted-ed man say "pimping their ride."

why would venice make you think of Milan? Thats like hearing New York and thinking Los Angeles
The city states of Venice and Milan were right next to each other, and were both large players of the Italian Renaissance.

What the heck is that "calle del squero"? That's spanish, vernice is in italy, in Italian that would be "via dello squero"...

il veneziano somiglia motlo anche allo spagnolo!
A Venezia al posto delle vie ci sono i "calli", così come al posto delle strade i "Rio di..." :)
I want to visit Venice one day and ride in a gondola...
How so?
That's terrible. Climate change really is a big issue that no one seems to care about.
P.S. Rising sea levels take time to cause serious issues. They certainly are rising, but they are rising slowly. I'm sure Venice will be safe for at least a couple more decades.
Ah, I see. So that means the first stories in houses are almost submerged?
When I hear Venice I think of AC2...
Taxi's, limos Uber! Same story! ;))

So youre telling me we could've had colourful gondolas in Venice if it weren't for the church?
I think Fórcola is spelled Fòrcola/Forcola. It doesn't matter, but still. 😂
wooden Gondollas
gondola XDDDD
NO! Make gondalas creative again!
0:09 No, the first thing that comes to my mind is Doge Enrico Dandolo.
+AncientEgyptian Yes, Civ V and the fourth crusade.
Well, when I think of Venice, I think of Assassins Creed xD Cause of this, some things in the video seemed strangely familiar.

Still don't get why they didn't just have roads and streets because cars are much faster than boats
Not sure if you are a troll, but here it goes: Venice is an ancient city build on water. Roads are not an option.
the canals are not only roads, but a direct watersource, sewer system, irrigation and fortification.
Besides, it's much easier to push a boat, than to turn a medieval carriage in the narrow streets. Hve you ever been there?
😊
