I know this is supposed to be inspiring but I will never be able to afford something like that even with two jobs. Sometimes videos like this make me feel like my dreams might never actually come true. Everything is so expensive ... I think I may just have to start watching people who can help struggling people like me trying to make ends meet still be able to make something like this work. I've had to start foraging for weeds to help feed my chickens and had to start using leftover meat and white rice to add to my dog's food just so they can eat well. This video basically just reminds me of all these things. 😔😔😔

With everything becoming more and more expensive, I understand the frustration... I dont remember where, but I saw that someone had used empty 2L pop bottles to build an eves trough. May not look as fancy, but least its functional, can even ask neighbors to save any extra to help out. All the best to you.

Totally hear you on this - this is WAY overkill for most folks, I obviously am going to an extreme because this is my absolute passion - you can do a lot for low with DIY setups, and cities have a rebate! You don't need thousands of gallons to get started.

I understand what you mean it's out of my reach too. BUT saving rainwater doesn't have to be this expensive most houses where I live already have rain gutters. Only very dry areas in the world tend to not have it. Attach it to a pipe and get some rain barrels. They should range between 40-200 per barrel. It's not on this level but for a smaller garden in can help cut watering a fair bit. For 200 bucks I could I set up a 400-600 liter reserve. Combined with good mulching it's enough for a few weeks.

In Mexico they make water storage out of block and cement. My mother-in-law calls it a pileta. They cover it with aluminum on wood, which is removable so they can clean it when they want to. Abuelo had a cement covered block storage, but they couldn't clean that.
It seems other people call them a pila, sorry I can't post a link.

@@Eucis93 you are reminding me of the CA drought in the 1970s. I was a little girl. we would save our bath water and then scoop it in buckets to flush the toilet!
Mom even tried watering the garden that way but the water was too heavy and impractical to carry.
The 5k gallon set up is "dream only" for most of us, but I'm going to get a couple of 50-gallon barrels up sometime in the next couple of years, even though water shortages are not an issue where I live now, because rainwater is so much better for the plants than what comes out of the tap.

Some people confuse rainwater collection laws and rainwater (any water, but applicable to rain water) storage laws. For example, some states don't have a limit on how much rainwater you can harvest (only about half the states do, and it's usually measured by the cubic acre), but they DO have laws banning dams on a property that do not meet proper code. In my state, there was an incident that flooded (and nearly destroyed) 6 peoples homes and almost 1/2 of someones farm crops due to their neighbor's diy dam breaking.

I know it sounds wrong, but hear me out. Small creeks, rivers, ponds. Hell, your aquifers, they're supplied by what? Guess.
Now imagine every household in a large city begins collecting every drop of rainwater that falls on their property. Because if you let one do it, the idea is that you have to let everyone do it, and you're supposed to imagine what happens if everyone does it as a lawmaker.
You get ecological disasters. Entire species, I know this sounds like an exaggeration but it's not, can die out. Your favorite fishing spot is now a mud hole. You damage forests, and induce a large carbon footprint.
What's the solution? Fuck if i know, man. Making RAIN illegal is stupid, but so are the consequences of not doing so.

The law required that he hire a landscaper who then hired a general contractor to build it. ‘A homeowner just throwing a bucket out there’ is illegal. ‘Pay a small fortune to have a contractor do the same thing’ is legal. Also, some utilities take issue with the increase in sewer usage because their billing is based on fresh water usage. They are processing the waste but are unable to charge more as the fresh water usage is unchanged (or lower).

I watch this short every time I see it. It reminds me of when I was a young girl and lived in the country with my uncle for a short while. All he had was an open lid drum that caught the rain. For us, porable water, drinking water. It was delicious. If I ever have a house, I'd definitely catch the rain water, and I'd have a small veggoe garden.

One thing that the drought in Cape Town did was reinforce the need for people to have rainwater collection tanks on their property, we water our garden from said tank and use it for other things and we've never dipped below half. If we face another drought at least we'll have water to spare for hygiene, etc.

Shit, even out pergola has gutters, even if you don’t connect gutters to a tank, it goes into drainage which connects to stormwater, thence back into our water reservoir here in out regional city with population of 40K. Ya’ll need to push for more water sustainability over there, guys. It’s a simple move. If municipalities are worried (needlessly) about reduction in water catchment, they can limit tank size to be proportionate to roof size. Yikes.
