    Mighty fine chopping Mr. Young. Long-time viewer first-time commenter. I like the ax profile, good bite, and nice cheeks for splitting. Thank you for sharing. God bless

    Great episode, Mark! I really like chopping tools, and this brand you reviewed is new to me. I have refinished and rehandled several old axes, and find the work verry satisfying!
    Thanks for yet another great show! Your opinions are greatly respected!

    Just bought a HF hachet for $12. 1 1/5 lb head. Did all the mods Wrangler Star rec’d. Put a leather guard on the handle close to head. Bought a leather edge guard. Looks and works like a $100 hatchet.

      I was thinking about doing something similar. I am a bit suspect over the quality of the cheap axe heads. I have heard they are cast instead of forged. Time will tell. Thanks for commenting

    Hi Mark, those axes look like good users despite the QC issues you pointed out. I like a thinner handle myself. Take care 👍

      Hey Wade. Strange that they would even send an axe out with this issue. Thanks for commenting

    What an axemanship, Mark. 5 inchrs of hardwood in 13 chops! Your mother's maiden name must have been Bunyan. You are a skilled woodcarver as well.

    Hi Mark, great review. I've got the 500g from them which is more like a cross with a tomahawk. Works well for small tasks. Thanks Mark and take care 👍🙂

    I had a similar experience with my Fiskar X7, there was a slight coating on the edge which made it seem slightly dull. A couple of passes with a ceramic rod fixed it. The axes look great. The first axe had a good bit to it.

    • @MarkYoungBushcraft
      @MarkYoungBushcraft  3 роки тому

      I should have checked for the coating before testing the edge. It was a very thin layer. I do like the axes. Good quality with the one exception. Thanks for commenting

    A handy way to remove “stuff” from a tool handle is to use the sharp edge of a piece of broken glass. Tape can be applied around the rest of the glass piece.

    I ordered 3 axes from Prandi a few years ago. 2 were the same axes you have, another was the Yankee pattern. My sheaths/masks were all to big but that was after contacting Prandi about them missing from my order & they sent them after but all too big. Same problem with thin steel on one side of the eye & thicker on the other side. The small hatchet fit well. I also thought the hafts/handles were far too thick. I tuned them up & have since sold them all for slightly more than I paid for them. The only one I may regret selling is the small hatchet.
    *Edit: I'm pretty sure these axes are drop forged not hammer forged.

      Interesting that you had a similar experience with your axes. I felt I had to call it as I saw it even if the company was not happy with me. I believe you are correct about the axes are drip forged. At least not cast as some cheaper axes are. Thanks for commenting

    I like both of them . It's a shame about the tilted mount . I'm going to try the tung oil as it looks nice . Good review Mark .

    • @MarkYoungBushcraft

      Yes, they are nice axes. Tung does not soak in like BLO. That is why I used it as the last coat. Seals the wood nicely. Thanks for commenting

    Great job on the review! 👍🏻 But that bigger axe would bother me for as long as I owned it! It's as crooked as a dog's hind leg....😁

    Is your 1000g different from prandi 3.011.T DIN 7294 on prandi italian site?
    Because yours is all silver and that one is black with silver

    It's hard to tell from the video, but it almost looks like the axe blade is twisted out of alignment with the eye/poll. Is that the case or is it strictly a mounting error? If it is the first scenario, this should have been caught. As a craftsman myself I'd not want that type of error to go out of my shop. Otherwise, nice looking tools once the handles were thinned. It is easy to get caught up in some details but performance, usability and durability speak for themselves.

      Hi Richard. Yes, I believe you are spot on regarding the mounting of the head. I am likely going to leave for now as it works great as is. Thanks for commenting

    My experience with Prandi is they are really hit or miss (mostly miss) on the fit and finish. That is reflected in the price of their axes. Personally, I prefer to spend a little more for a GB, HB or Council Tool.

    • @MarkYoungBushcraft
      @MarkYoungBushcraft  2 роки тому

      That has been my experience as well. I can say the heads are great but the hang is another issue. Thanks for commenting

    In my opinion that 1kg head axe should have failed QC and then be sold at a discount as a factory 2nd.
    A hand crafted tool is never perfect, that *is* part of the charm, but there are just too many issues with this particular axe.

    • @MarkYoungBushcraft
      @MarkYoungBushcraft  3 роки тому

      Yes, I agree. Strange they would send a reviewer (or anyone) an axe with so obvious an issue. Thanks for commenting

  • @jimf1964
    @jimf1964 3 роки тому

    Not sure if that's a good thing or bad that they just sent something random off the line. Honest or sloppy salesmanship? It was a sloppy job, but it depends on the price. And not sending you a replacement, to me was inexcusable.
    I'm curious why you used lacquer, then tung oil. After some cursing and learning, I started to like the stuff. A rifle stock I did a year or so ago came out wonderful, but I would use one type for finishing.
    Oh, I also watched an interesting article on that oil. Apparently, unless you're very careful with reading labels, and know already that if it doesn't specifically say 100% pure, it's probably got other stuff in it. Sometimes a lot of other stuff.

    • @MarkYoungBushcraft
      @MarkYoungBushcraft  3 роки тому

      I agree Jim. You would think they would send a reviewer a hand picked sample. Actually, I removed the factory lacquer, then applied multiple coats of boiled linseed oil and let soak in. I finished up with the tung oil as I like how it seals the wood against moisture. Tung does not soack in like BLO. Kind of stays on the surface. Thanks for commenting

    • @jimf1964
      @jimf1964 3 роки тому

      Mark Young If you have pure tung oil, and want it to soak in, you can thin it for the first coat. Most tung oils already are thinned. I love the stuff, but I'll have to experiment with linseed oil. I have to admit I only used it once, many years ago, so I can't compare.

    • @MarkYoungBushcraft
      @MarkYoungBushcraft  3 роки тому

      @@jimf1964 Right on. Good technique. This is pure tung oil that I use on spoons and the like so no thinners in it. I did add thinner to the first couple of applications of BLO to get it to soak in. Then coatings without. I do this as well with my hiking staffs. Seems to make them harder on the surface. Thanks Jim
