Vijay had some phenomenal movies in the late 90s like thullada manum thullum and kadhalukku mariyadhi both movies are now considered tamil classics both also have beautiful songs in them. My all time favourite vijay will always be Ghilli and that will be my best recommendation for vijay, as long as you see it as a commercial movie, you will have lots of fun watching it.

Gilli is not Vijay movie , it's Mahesh Babu movie . Vijay did not have any good movies of his own all are copied from Telugu . He is notable star now because of his Influential Father .
In terms of good realistic acting, I don't think we have none from vijay.. if I think loud only one movie to some extend "udhaya" comes to my mind which even diehard vijay fan had not watched
