- In this video, we take you through how to set up the Korg SQ-64, including those pesky breakout cables, and show you how quickly we can put a beat together.
Korg are hoping to shake things up with its new SQ-64. A step up from the simple and monophonic SQ-1, the polyphonic SQ-64 seems to have everything present and accounted for, with plenty of connectivity and functionality. Could this be the machine for you?
Buy the Korg SQ-64:

If you don’t already own a hardware sequencer, Korg’s SQ-64 should be high on your list of options. It’s relatively affordable, fun to use, and looks dead cool. It can also function as a controller in its own right as well as convert MIDI to CV for modular gear and vintage synths. It also plays nice with just about anything.

Brilliant vid, excited to see more from this collab!
Just bought the SQ-64, really appreciate the help this video gave me in setting it up! Can't wait to make more beats :)
That's great to hear Tim! Enjoy the SQ-64 :)
Oh - and more videos to come too..
loving the new video content @ Attack Mag!
great bro. I've been watching different vids on this, and you get that old school vibe going nicely
Been looking for a way to set up my Korg SQ-64 and this video does a great job explaining the steps and I've already made a beat with it!
Keep making music!
This is so dope! I just got a new Korg for my bday and am a total noob so this is really gonna help me. Thanks man!
Glad to hear it!
Nice little tip on drum assignment 🙌
Really good video. So many cool features. I am new to making beats but videos like thisreally helps.
Glad it was helpful! Make sure to subscribe for more :)
SQ-64 just got a major firmware update and can be bought on Reverb for like $129.99; brand new.
Fantastic video!
Dream to work with this guy also love mixing analogue feat with Afro really think it’s the future. Been using a prophet rev 2 for it. Thanks for being an inspiration odunsi.
Great to hear. Part 2 coming soon!
This is really great. I much prefer it to my beat step cos of the polyphony which doesn't get mentioned here?
Within the first minute of the video he calls it a poly sequencer then says tracks A,B, and C are polyphonic.
I’d like to see a comparison of the pros and cons of this vs the Keystep Pro which seems its closest competitor feature wise.
Something we can definitely think about
Nice, cheers 😎
Welcome!
I'm about to buy the volca sample 2 and appreciate this video. My only qualm is with the fact each instrument is on a different midi channel. What an absolute waste of midi channels.
Are you sequencing multiple things off the Volca sampler?
Set up a successful connection but only one instrument triggers no matter how I alter the midi TX or RX channels. Any advice?
Awesome man!! What midi setting does the sample need to be on? Trying to get my sq64 rolling.
The kick and the snare don’t have separate lanes (visually) is that right?
Does it have a lot of options for scale and chord mode? Also is there parameter locks per step on drum tracks thank you in advance
It does and we are covering this in next video 👍👍
Being a newbie to synths could you tell me how to change midi channels for the b and c channels on the sq-64. The Global menu is quite extensive and not sure how to change the basic midi number. I’ve got an NTS-1 connected to channel A which works fine but get no sound when playing through the b snd c channels. Thanks.
I honestly didn't understand how to connect the sq64 to any synth, it's not clear to me, and I can't find any information online. what is the connection scheme for playing with a synth such as a minilogue?
Heya, just started with SQ64 today and this has been so useful as manual falls pretty short! I've managed to connect to my RD8 drum machine and all good but struggling with the melodic. Set up with my Roland Ju06A and managed to get sound in Keyboard Mode but not to play live on the actual synth keyboard. Now just connnected the Reface CP and I am connected as proven by when in Control mode but can get no sounds in Keyboard mode and nothing recording playing in live either. I suspect it's to do with midi routing. Can you help? Thanks
Can you assign channel 1 and 2 to the same midi out ?
Thank you!
i tried this its just not working everytime i set a midi channel d2 for example on midi channel 2 and 😅 switch off the sq it resets the midi channel to midi channel 10
did you find a way to change pattern with a midi program change?
Thanks for the video...I've been beating head against the wall, and not in a good way
You got this!
At 3:50 I got super confuzzled LOL.
The imperative part of this whole clip is the f'n MIDI type A breakout cable. Unreal how frustrating a modern piece of gear can be. You'd think Korg would've maybe focused on better integration.
Many people say the same thing tbh
is that the one that works with Arturia stuff?
🔥 🔥 🔥
Global then what? Gotta bit of an edit glitch there. 2:22
That way you can understand why Korg persist in crippling the volcas sequencers with 16 steps... follow the money
I cant get it, i am too stupid to get a signal out of it....
Its a sequencer that doesn't send out sounds!
